earned him and Mrs. Gupta many well meaning and helpful friends.

Mr. Gupta returned to India in 1979 and started his consultancy work here. However, in 1982 Mr. Gupta met with a
fatal accident, and this brought about a complete change in Mrs. Gupta’s life style. She was quick to realise that
she could no longer be content with remaining as a housewife; she would need to do something to augment the
family income.

She showed a good bit of business acumen in deciding to make use of her contacts in Fiji and go in for exports.
She had known a good number of Indian families there and had known their requirements and tastes. The first
thing that struck her was a great demand among the Indians settled there for greeting cards for various festivals
such as Diwali greetings cards etc. This is how she started her career in exports and so was born East West
Export Corporation in 1982, located at Safdarjung Enclave, New Delhi

Soon Mrs. Gupta added on other items in her export list to Fiji, more notable among those being the calendars
displaying pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses and brass items. She later found a good market for Khurja
pottery items, especially for use in the hotels, etc.

Her success in exports to Fiji gave her the confidence to expand her activities in other countries. Her son had
settled down in New Zealand. So for obvious reasons, she tried entering the market there, with instant success.
She was particularly successful in exporting handicrafts to New Zealand. Her daughter and son-in-law were in
Malaysia, and so her next entry was there with considerable success.

Case Study

Mr. Mahesh Rijhwani, an articulate, pleasant young man, is a self-employed entrepreneur who has had a rough
time in his early years. When he was only sixteen, having just done his Higher Secondary, he was forced to take
up a clerical job in the Ministry of Finance. He continued there for the next six years and in 1981 joined the office
of the Standing Committee on Public Enterprises (SCOPE) in its publications division. Even while working, he
pursued his studies and by 1983 obtained the M.Com., degree. He obtained a Diploma in Public Relations from
Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in 1984.

It was while he was with SCOPE that he developed a liking for printing. Being in the publication division, he
managed to pick up a lot about the technique of designing, composing and printing. By 1985, he had made up his
mind to enter the printing line on his own.
Luckily for him, he found another young man equally keen to start a printing venture of his own and the two joined
hands in partnership. However, within a year the partnership broke up and Rijhwani decided to start afresh on his
own. Thus, was born “Graph ‘N’ Print” in May 1987 located at Lajpat Nagar, 1, New Delhi .

Approach adopted by Mr. Rijhwani was to book orders and do the designing and composing himself. For actual
printing work he had located a few parties whose workmanship was of good quality. He explains that though his
objective was to setup a full-fledged printing press, he had decided to do it in phases so that he did not have to go
in for borrowing on a big scale.

Within just over one year Mr. Rijhwani has been able to develop a number of clients such as National Fertilisers
Ltd., Rajasthan Catalyst Foundation, National Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs, World Assembly of Small and

processor, Mr. Rijhwani has been able to generate a turnover of about Rs. 2.5 lakhs in this period. He attributes
his success to ensuring complete customer satisfaction. Quality of workmanship is personally supervised by him
with his sub-contractors. He is extremely particular to adhere to the promised time schedule for completion of the
job. He says that he prefers taking on the complete jobs which include designing, composing and printing. He has
plans to go in for Desk Top Publishing by middle of next year, and thereafter, the next phase will be a full-fledged
printing press, his original ambition.
