As an Engineers of 21st Century, you will be required to achieve specialization in preparation for
research or engineering practice and other technical fields in order to (a) provide understanding
of specialized areas of engineering as preparation for research or cross-disciplinary engineering,
(b) provide the ability to understand the larger systems goals with the ability to design
specifications and integrate separately engineered products into a well-balanced design that
meets user needs, and (c) take maximum advantage of the resources through involvement in
research with mentoring by faculty researchers and their research associates.
Disclaimer: We have given below opinions of several experts in the respective fields of
Engineering. The opinions & views expressed by the experts are based on their own judgments
and experience. We hope that these opinions will help candidates to make a proper choice of a
branch in Engineering during the process of admission. We have included views of only a few
major branches of Engineering. We shall not be held responsible for the decisions taken by the
candidates based on the following information since it is merely suggestive in nature.
Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering is the basic branch of engineering which deals with different types of
mechanisms and machines that transfer and transmit energy in various forms. It involves study
of various aspects of machines, its components, its design, theory behind it and kinetics and
dynamics of machines. Not only this, it also involves study of various techniques of
manufacturing and how these can be employed to obtain the desired products. Product design,
its behavior under various conditions, analysis, as well as performance of the product needs to be
studied by a Mechanical Engineer. The work of a Mechanical Engineer can be extremely
challenging and fulfilling, requiring IT, design and analytical skills together with an ability to work
as a team. As their work involves production, transmission and use of mechanical power and
heat, they have to analyze the different materials used for the machines; investigate the different
energy sources and the power they generate and the design problems if any. While designing
and making a commercial product; they have to take into account all the business and marketing
aspects to make sure that the product is affordable. Mechanical Engineers are employed in
various industries whose function is concerned with design, manufacturing, maintenance, mining,
transportation, communications, oil refining, chemical manufacturing, paper, sugar, textiles,
aerospace, nuclear energy, natural gas production and transmission, construction, etc.
Production Engineering
Production Engineering is a specialized branch of Mechanical Engineering which deals with
Engineering Materials, Machining Science, Welding, Forming, Casting, CAD/CAM/CIM, Tool
Design, Process Engineering & Tooling, Mechatronics, Operation Research, Economics, Finance,
Accounting, Costing, Entrepreneurship Development, and Modern Quality Management practices
like TQM, BPR, Concurrent Engg, Lean Manufacturing, JIT, TPM, SCM, etc. This is a unique
branch of engineering in which a balanced approach is given towards basic branch of engineering
i.e. Mechanical Engineering and Management Science. Candidates having a creative, innovative
mind, sound technical knowledge, analytical skills, and possessing excellent leadership qualities
will probably find Production engineering as a challenging and lucrative career. The Production
Engineers are employed by Manufacturing industries, Automobile industries, Management
Consultancies, Finance and Investment Consultancies, Construction industries, Jewellery
industries, Refining industries, Service industries, etc.
Industrial Engineering
Industrial Engineering is a inter-disciplinary branch of engineering which is closely related with
Production Engineering as well as Mechanical Engineering and deals with management of
resources viz. Man, Machine, Materials, Finance, Space, Energy, etc. Industrial Engineering is
concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of men, materials
and equipment. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skill in the mathematical, physical and
social sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to
specify; predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems. Candidates having a
creative and innovative mind and possessing leadership qualities will probably find Industrial
engineering as a challenging and lucrative career. The scope of Industrial Engineering is not only
limited with manufacturing industries but also plays a vital role in Finance sector, Mining
industries, Government offices, Construction industries, Refining industries, Hotels, Hospitals,
other service industries, etc.
Automobile Engineering
Automobile Engineering is a specialized branch of Mechanical Engineering which deals with
design, manufacturing and maintenance of various types of automobiles. The Automobile
Technology has made a rapid advancement in the recent years and has ushered in a new era of hi-
tech vehicles. The business environment in the Indian Auto Industry is now very conducive and is poised for
exponential growth in future. The growth in the Automobile Industry in the coming years will further
boost the future prospects of Automobile Engineers. Automobile Engineers can be employed in executive
and managerial positions in Automobile Manufacturing industries in various departments such as Design,

as maintenance and service engineers in Automobile Workshops, Aircraft Industries and aviation, Marine
vessels, Diesel Power Stations and Earth Moving Equipment manufacturers. Other potential areas for
employment include Automobile and Marine insurance, Hospitality industry etc. The entrepreneurial lot can
set up their own Automobile workshops and service stations.
Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and physical and mathematical
concepts to solve problems in medicine and biology. Biomedical engineering has been a critical
component of the technological advances in medicine and health care delivery that has
dramatically transformed the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in the last few
decades. Whether in the area of biomedical imaging, biosignal processing, medical
instrumentation, biomechanics, biomaterials and implants, drug delivery, or cell and tissue
engineering, these advances are continuing to accelerate.
Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is the oldest and most respected discipline of all engineering fields. Civil
engineers design, build, and manage the infrastructure of civilization, which includes buildings,
bridges, highways, water supply systems, and other public works. These services are the
cornerstone of the discipline, although no longer the limiting scope. The civil and environmental
engineering programs include structural engineering, structural mechanics, geotechnical
engineering, earthquake engineering, hydrology and water resources engineering, and
environmental engineering.
Civil engineers play a vital role in creating the man-made environment and in protecting the
natural environment, bringing together science and art to create much of the tangible fabric of
today's society. They plan, design, construct, maintain, and manage airports, bridges, tunnels,
buildings, harbor facilities, dams, highways, waterways, pipelines, sanitation systems, and other
aspects of the built environment.
Civil Engineering is a Profession of designing and executing structural works that serve the
general public, holding the safety, health, and welfare of the public paramount". Civil engineering
is a broad field of engineering dealing with the planning, design, construction, maintenance and
management of physical infrastructure networks.
Chemical Engineering
The Chemical Engineering span the general themes of energy/environment and nano-engineering
and focus on the areas of cellular/molecular bioengineering, process systems engineering, and
semiconductor manufacturing. Aside from the fundamentals of chemical engineering (applied
mathematics, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, kinetics, reactor engineering and
separations), particular emphasis is on genomics and proteomics, biochips, metabolic
engineering, molecular evolution, bio-nano-technology, air pollution, combustion, environmental
multimedia modeling, pollution prevention, aerosol processes, cryogenics, combinatorial catalysis,
molecular simulation, process simulation/control/optimization/ integration/synthesis, membrane
science, semiconductor processing, chemical vapor deposition, plasma processing and simulation,
and polymer engineering.
Chemical engineering largely involves the design and maintenance of chemical processes for
large-scale manufacture. The development of the large-scale processes characteristic of
industrialized economies is a feat of chemical engineering. Indeed, chemical engineers are
responsible for the availability of the modern high-quality materials that are essential for running
an industrial economy. Chemical engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new
materials and techniques, an important form of research and development.
Information Technology
Information technology addresses how information is acquired and modeled, as well as how
understanding can emerge. Understanding IT concepts and mastering IT skills are just part of
what is needed to enhance intellectual capabilities. Information Technology is defined to include
computer hardware, software, and communications networks, as well as technology interfaces
and human-computer interfaces. IT is the fastest growing occupational sector across the world
economy.
It is predicted that Computer software engineers, Computer systems designers, IT Engineers will
be among the fastest growing occupations in next decade, while computer systems analysts,
database administrators, computer scientists, and computers and information systems managers
are projected to grow much faster than average.
