Lesson 6...

Getting the Most From

Worship
Amazing grace! How sweet the
sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am
found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart
to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace
appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and
snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus
far,
And grace will lead me home.
When we’ve been there ten
thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s
praise
Than when we’d first begun.
Getting the Most from Worship

Worship- “To kneel down before, to show

reverence”
Before Worship 5:1

• Prepare yourself for worship

• 1 Timothy 2:8
“I was glad when they said unto me let us go
into the House of the Lord.”
Psalm 122:1
Before Worship 5:1

In John 4:23, what kind of

worshipers does Jesus say the
Father seeks?
Before Worship 5:1

“but the hour is coming, and is now

here, when the true worshipers will
worship the Father in spirit and truth,
for the Father is seeking such people to
worship him.”
Before Worship 5:1

Most of us spend
more time dressing up
the external than
preparing the internal
Before Worship 5:1
Three ways we can prepare to worship in
spirit and truth.
1. Prayer
2. Anticipate
3. Cultivate
1. Prayer
• Acts 1:14
Prayer is how we experience what
promise of Jesus in John 16:24?
1. Prayer

“Until now you have asked nothing in

my name. Ask, and you will receive,
that your joy may be full.”
2. Anticipate

• Come to worship expecting God

to do great things!
• Hebrews 4:16
2. Anticipate

What does Jesus promise will happen

when two or three gather in His
name (Matthew 18:20) ?
2. Anticipate

“For where two or three are gathered

in my name, there am I among
them.”
Matthew 18:20
3. Cultivate
• Cultivate your heart
seed will not take root and
produce fruit in dry, hard soil.

Mark 4:19
3. Cultivate

• We can cultivate our hearts by

praying what prayer found in
psalm 19:14?
3. Cultivate
“Let the words of my mouth and
the meditation of my hear be
acceptable in your sight, O Lord
my rock and my redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14
Psalm 139:23
3. Cultivate

• We should also cultivate an

environment for others to
grow.
During Worship 5:1-4
1. Be attentive
2. Be reverent
3. Be focused
4. Don't delay your
commitments
Be attentive to God's Word
• Nehemiah 8:3
• Acts 2:41
• Hebrews 4:12
Be attentive to God's Word

How does Solomon express this

principle of attentiveness in
Ecclesiastes 5:1?
Be attentive to God's Word

“....to draw near to listen is better

than to offer the sacrifice of
fools,”
Be attentive to God's Word

• 1 Samuel 15:22
• Hosea 4:6
Be Reverent 5:2

• Remember the difference

between God and us.
2 Chronicles 7:1-3
Be Reverent 5:2

What does Isaiah 40:28 remind

us?
Be Reverent 5:2
“Have you now known? Have you
not heard? The Lord is the
everlasting God, the Creator of the
ends of the earth. He does not faint
or grow weary; his understanding
is unsearchable.”
Be Reverent 5:2

We must remember that God is the

Almighty Creator of all things in
order to be reverent in our worship.
• Exodus 3:5
• Romans 1:25
Be Focused 5:3

During worship we should not allow

or thoughts to wander from the
things of God. That's why God
gives us what command in Psalm
46:10?
Be Focused 5:3
“Be still, and know that I am
God. I will be exalted among the
nations, I will be exalted in the
earth!”
Psalm 46:10
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

During worship remember that we

have committed ourselves to the
Lordship of Jesus Christ
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

Jesus is called Savior about 20 times

in the New Testament
And Lord over 400 times
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

Jesus is called Savior about 20 times

in the New Testament
And Lord over 400 times
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

The word Lord comes from the Greek

word “kyrios” which means “To
whom a person belongs, the owner
who has control.”
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call

upon the name of the Lord shall be
saved.”
1 Corinthians 6:20, “For you were bought
with a price. So glorify God in your
body.”
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

If Jesus is truly Lord of our lives, what

will we say with the psalmist in
Psalm 116:18?
Don't Delay Your Commitments 5:4

“I will pay my vows to the Lord in the

presence of all his people.”
After Worship

1. Keep your commitments

2. Take God seriously all week
Keep Your Commitments 5:5
We should never make a vow to
God that we do not keep. How
does Psalm 66:14 express the
circumstances in which vows are
often made to the Lord?
Keep Your Commitments 5:5

“That which me lips uttered and my

mouth promised when I was in
trouble.”
Keep Your Commitments 5:5

If we never make commitments to

God we will not grow spiritually.
That's why we have what
command in Psalm 76:11?
Keep Your Commitments 5:5

“Make your vows to the Lord your

God and perform them; let all
around him bring gifts to Him who
is to be feared.”
Keep Your Commitments 5:5

God wants us to continue in our

spiritual growth- 2 Peter 3:18
Part of that growth includes putting into
practice what we hear- James 1:22
Take God seriously all week 5:7

There must be a long lasting

response from us to God's will. We
must FEAR God.
Take God seriously all week 5:7

Two types of fear

1. Bad fear- thoughts put into our minds
from Satan. (there is no fear in love)
2. Good fear- A Reverence or Awe for
God. (Fear God and keep his
commandments)
Take God seriously all week 5:7

What does Proverbs 8:13 say is a

result of good fear?
Take God seriously all week 5:7

“The fear of the Lord is hatred of

evil. Pride and arrogance and the
way of evil and perverted speech I
hate.”
Take God seriously all week 5:7

We are promised that those who

fear God will not lack anything
that we need.
“Fear the Lord, you his saints, for
those who fear him have no lack!”
In order to get the most out of
Worship

during and after!
