For a small country, Iceland sure does have or has a lot of volcanoes! Even though it is
only about the same size as the state of Kentucky, Iceland is home to more than 100
volcanoes. One of those volcanoes, Mount Hekla, has erupted more than 20 times since
Iceland was settled. Volcanoes in Iceland can cause other problems. Since many of
Iceland's volcanoes are covered with ice and snow, eruptions can cause flooding!

Deserts can be dry places, but no desert is as dry as the Atacama Desert in northern
Chile. Parts of this desert will not see a single drop of rain this year. At one time, Arica,
the largest city in northern Chile, did not see rain for 14 years. As a matter of fact, some
parts of this desert have not seen rain in 400 years! Did you have an idea that any place
on Earth could be that dry?

For many years, people had to imagine what Earth looked/looks like from space. In 1959,
those people got their first real look! On August 7 that year, the U.S. satellite Explorer
VI transmitted the first picture of Earth from space. Two years later, the first human
got to see that view when Russia sent a man into space. A few weeks after that Russian
space flight, Alan Shepard became the first U.S. astronaut in space.

Vancouver is selected by International Olympic Committee as the location for the 2010
Winter Olympics. Where will I be and what will I be doing when the Olympics come to
Vancouver? Vancouver is probably the best city that I have been. However, the world is
so big. There are many interesting places that I can visit. Therefore, I don't think I will
come to Vancouver again in the following 10 years. Although I will not be here, I will
definitely watching. I hope to win my country. If I watch the Vancouver Olympics in 2010,
I will remind that I studied English that place. I will memorize the buildings, streets and
people. Certainly, I will miss at that time. I love winter sports like snowboarding or ski.
There is no place for skiing in my country so I have never tried. However, I enjoy watch
the terrific skills of skiers sliding down in high speed.

Song Kran is the happiest time of the year in Thailand. It is Thai New Year. Furthermore,
it is in the hottest time of the year in Thailand. Song Kran is celebrated on April 13th.
We call this day Maha Song Kran. In the early morning, we go to a temple. We make merit
in Buddhism way which is we give food, water and flowers to monks. We listen to a monk·s
speech and receive a blessing from monks. Thai has have a ceremony of pouring the
fragrant water on a statue of the Buddha on Song Kran. We call this ceremony Song Nam
Phra. After that, we build a little pagoda from sand. It is also a merit. Thai people believe
that when people walk out a temple, they take sand with their feet so they have to bring
sand back to a temple. A sand pagoda is decorated by a lot of small, colorful, triangle
flags. Song Kran is a traditional time to meet the relatives. We pour small amount of Nam
Oab, fragrant water with petals floating in it, on our parents· hand as a sign of respect.
On Song Kran day, we smell the fragrance from Nam Oab and different kinds of flower.
The smell of Nam Oab is sweet and makes us calm. We can hear the Song Kran song
everywhere - such as TV, on the radio, in restaurants and shopping malls. It is the old-
fashioned song. In the afternoon, we throw water at each other. This time is the most
fun. We laugh. We feel refreshed because of the water. We are happy. We can throw
water at everyone and nobody gets angry with this.
