Positioning Your Brand in Marketplace

We have one objective: If you are a writer, author or speaker, this ebook series along
with our teleseminars is designed to show you how to build your social network community and

position your brand identity in the Christian marketplace. A social network community is a

computer network where people create user accounts using special software programs to share

ideas, files, pictures, videos, blogs and create relationships. Example, Facebook, MySpace and

LinkedIn are social network communities.

Brand Your Identity

What is your brand identity? A brand identity is a name, a symbol, a position, a sign, a

slogan, or a specific color to distinguish your unique personality. Example, UPS slogan “What

can Brown do for you?” is a strategic alignment for their organization. The slogan says: How can

we (Brown) satisfy your shipping needs? The color brown, along with the UPS emblem,

communicates the organization’s desire to satisfy the needs of their customers rather than listing

products and services for shipping.

Your brand identity is the characteristics that you use to distinguish your product, service,

ministry, or business from other groups. Example: Christianity is a type of brand identity. There

are many religious organizations operating around the globe. Christianity distinguishes a select

group of people from the other religious organizations. Fact, research shows, Christianity is the

largest religion in the world. Percentage of Christians Global:

According to The World Christian Database

more than 30% of the world's population are Christians.

training program and learn how use social networks to expand your brand identity. The Social

Media Preneur (SMP) training program is a CURRICULUM-BASED preparation module that is

Whether you're starting as a beginner or you are an expert, our Social Media Preneur training

program can be quickly employed and incorporated into your social media marketing campaign.

Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0

Over the last decade the information industry has changed. The internet, web 2.0

technology and new social network applications emerged, placing more power in the hands of

the independent artists. Today, more than 500 million people spend their time sharing

information and connecting on the internet in social communities. No longer is it enough to

simply try to attract others to your website (web 1.0), you MUST position your identity, go

where they are going, and that is social media (web 2.0).

What is social media? Social media is the collaboration between internet web 1.0

technology and web 2.0 social network applications. Web 1.0 is a static approach to attract

people to visit a single web site. In web 1.0, the web master created several HTML graphic pages

in one web site. In web 2.0, internet users log into social software programs to create pages.

After creating an account the users share data files, MP3 audio files, pictures, HTML links and

videos files across interconnected networks. What are social media applications? Social media

applications include: social bookmarks, online photo applications, video channels, text

directories, podcasts and online social communities like Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpace..

We added review questions and space after each section in the ebook to take notes. At the

end of this ebook we give you a list of social communities and social tools to help you build your

social network. Follow along in the course, take notes and start taking steps towards becoming a

social mediapreneur.

Window of Opportunities

Informational products provide many opportunities for Christian artists. They provide the

medium to communicate your marketing messages to people in the Christian marketplace.

Communication and marketing are very important elements in your marketing plan. People have

to know about your book or know about your informational products in order to purchase copies.

In this ebook series, we will show you how to get connected to the mass audience that exists

within the world of social media. We will show you how to build your social media positioning

campaign, leverage informational products to get publicity, and communicate your unique

selling proposition to a select target audience.

Faith-Based Position

Like mainstream publishers, faith-book publishers tend to publish and promote products

that are similar to other products that have had major success. The Christian marketplace has lots

of copycat formulas that try to imitate the same accomplishments or follow the same patterns as

other popular products. For example, a new social mediapreneur who is not well known may

follow the identical marketing and sales strategy like the well known pastor, Rick Warren.

Warren is the pastor of the Saddleback Church in southern California and author of two top-

selling books The Purpose-Driven Church and The Purpose-Driven Life.

Warren sold more than 25 million copies by discounting The Purpose-Driven Life to

seven dollars and positioning his message through his membership site Pastors.com. Pastors.com

is a web based forum that is designed for Christian leaders. The web site provides practical

solutions, tools and resources to help leaders grow their spiritual organizations. The site connects

more than 140,000 users to blog threads and posts. An unknown preneur will not have the same

platform or the same type of influence in the Christian market like a Rick Warren.
SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 15

Social Media Positioning

To position your book, brand, ministry or business in the Christian market you need a

comprehensive plan. You need a strategy. You need a formula for success. You need a step-by-

step approach that combine all your marketing pieces together from start to finish (plan, +

strategy, + steps, + approach = success).

Why do you need a plan? By creating a written plan you will save time, money and effort

before you launch into pool of dreams. You need a plan of action to achieve success. Example,

publishing a book requires a plan of action; from designing the front cover, ordering the bar

code, organizing the content, to printing copies of the book; there are several tasks that need to

be accomplished prior to publishing. Your plan of action lists all the steps from the beginning to

the end to help you achieve your publishing goal. The tasks are the individual steps you take to

make progress toward completion. The approach is the way you get the job done. Will you set

aside one hour daily work on your manuscript? Will you read our ebooks, study the content, take

notes, and listen to the audio files? If so, success leaves clues for you to follow.

What is your (plan, + strategy, + steps, + approach for success)? The SMP training course

provides the framework (maps, teleseminars, ebooks) you need to learn how to build your own

positioning plan. How will participating in the SMP training program benefit you? The program

helps you realize you are in three positions:

1. You are just starting. You need more information to help you jump start your project.

2. You are on your way. You have an idea where you want to go.

3. You have achieved a goal. You need resources to help you travel to the next destination.

You’re in the right place if you are looking for momentum and new innovative ideas to help you

generate traffic to your web site and win new customers.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 16

Where You Are Now?

It does not matter if you are just getting started or at the end of your journey; every

approach to marketing is unique. No single, best seller formula exists that fits every product.

Being unique means as a social mediapreneur you should differentiate yourself from others.

How can you stand out in a market that is crowded with competition? Learn how to

position your profile and position your informational products above the crowd. Let us explain.

The wealthy chief tax collector Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus while a crowd of people followed

Jesus through the streets of Jericho. Unfortunately, Zacchaeus is vertically challenged. He could

not see over the crowd to get Jesus’ attention. After thinking about his position for a few

seconds, Zacchaeus ran ahead of the crowd and climbed into a sycamore fig tree. When Jesus

reached the spot where Zacchaeus sat in the tree, Jesus looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come

down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” (Luke 19:1-6)

What is Your Position?

Are you sitting in a tree above the crowd? What separates you from the competition?

What makes you one of a kind? Are you receiving the attention that you deserve? Zacchaeus has

several things in common with other authors, writers and speakers. He works a regular day job as

the chief tax collector. He experienced the difficulty of getting noticed in a crowded marketplace.

Think about the challenges Zacchaeus faced in the story. How did he overcome his dilemma?

What steps did Zachaeus take to stand out?

1) He knew what he wanted to achieve.

2) He ran ahead to achieve it.

3) He positioned himself in the tree above the crowd.

4) He gained the attention of the most important person, Jesus.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 17

How can infopreneurs position themselves in the marketplace to stand out among others?

The answer is easy. Running a SMP campaign will accomplish 3 things for you:

1. Social – Communicate your ideas among a community of others.

2. Media – Persuade people in the market to take notice based on your position.
3. Position – Establish your Brand and communicate your message through a series of
steps.

Understanding this concept is a hard lesson for social mediapreneurs who have tried to

promote and sell informational products but failed. After depleting the money in their budgets,

some authors give up pursuing their publishing and publicity goals. They discontinue

promotional efforts or continue spending more money trying to find a publicity solution that

actually works. If you feel tired from trying different publicity strategies that do not work, don’t

worry, we have a strategy that communicates your message to a massive audience.

Where Do You Wanna Be?

In today’s competitive market, social mediapreneurs need tools and strategies that are

effective. Social mediapreneurs need a systematic approach that provides consistent exposure in

the market. Social media positioning (SMP) is a powerful networking strategy that provides a

healthy stream through which messages can easily flow on the internet. The internet is a world

wide network of computers and devices that are interconnected. How can you communicate your

marketing message on the internet effectively?

Sharon Farnell, the managing director of Faith Division of Planned Television Arts,

advises, “Find what is unique and relevant, what hasn’t been talked about before in the media,

and go with that.” According to Farnell, it is also important to link books to topical stories or

issues that are of grave concern to large audiences. If the message is newsworthy and authors can
SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 18

add an inspirational or devotional slant, the message can be more attractive to Christian

publishers and the Christian media.

Only a few publicity firms that specialize in promoting books have publicists who

exclusively handle books of faith, Planned Television Arts is one of them. Some inspirational

consultants and agencies may specialize in connecting great stories with the Christian media, but

not necessarily the stories that are found in books. Social mediapreneurs who write for the

Christian market need the right tools, the right methods and the right message to reach their

target readers.

Christian Media Outlets

The outlets for Christian media parallel the outlets for the mainstream media. Example,

GodTube.com is similar to YouTube. Godtube.com is a video sharing platform that plays online

faith-based Christian videos. YouTube is a video sharing platform. Internet users can upload,

share, and view independent videos. The Christian media outlets have a strong presence in

television, radio, print, wire, and social networking. However, the three major factors that

distinguish Christian media outlets from their mainstream counterparts are:

1. They are loyal and devoted to their audiences

2. The content is consistent with Christian principles and beliefs

3. Phenomenal promotional power of churches, mega churches, & other organizations

Audience Statistics

A nationwide survey conducted by the Barna Group (*www.barna.org; March 14, 2005)

discovered in a typical month:

*Nearly half of all adults, 46 percent, listen to Christian radio.

*Forty-five percent of all adults tune in to a Christian TV program.

*One-third of all adults read a Christian magazine.

*One-third of all adults read a Christian book.

*One of every six adults (16 %) spent time visiting faith-oriented Web sites.

*Approximately 13 million un-churched adults read Christian magazines.

On a daily basis:

One out of every six U.S. adults (16 %) listened to Christian radio.
SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 21

Television

Major Christian television shows include the 700 Club, Hour of Power, and the Old Time

Gospel Hour. The North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention operates a

twenty-four-hour-a-day television network, Family Net, which telecasts a range of programs

from those that are religious in nature to classic sitcoms. Family Net programming is also

lifestyle oriented and features cooking and health segments and feature authors discussing their

works. Christian television has devoted viewers and many of them watch Christian television

programs every day. To them, it’s more than just an interest; it’s a central part of their lives.

Radio Stations

Salem Radio Network is Christian radio leading news network. It serves over 1,900 radio

stations, is a full-service news outlet with newscasts at the top and bottom of each hour, and

produces nine live daily and weekend talk shows. Salem Music Network provides three twenty-

four-hour Christian music formats and SRN Weekend furnishes weekend music programs.

Christian radio also proliferates. Its many rock stations, which play music that sounds

like top-forty music but with Christian-oriented words, appeal to a younger, freer-spending

demographic. The market for books of faith revolves around Christian publishers and bookstores.

Publishers include Thomas Nelson, WaterBrook (a division of Random House), Tyndale House,

Baker Books, Regal Books, Zondervan (a division of HarperCollins), and many more.

Publishing

Readers of Christian books are also extremely loyal, so selling Christian books has

become a big business. The Purpose-Driven Life, by Rick Warren (Zondervan, 2002), is the

fastest-selling nonfiction book of all time. The Left Behind series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry B.

Jenkins (Tyndale House Publishers) has reportedly sold more than 75 million copies since 1995.
SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 22

Christian retail booksellers have an active and powerful centralized trade association,

Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). CBA has nearly 2,300 member stores that sell Bibles,

Christian books, curriculum, apparel, music, videos, gifts, greeting cards, childrens’ resources,

and other materials. Like its mainstream counterpart, the American Booksellers Association

(ABA), CBA hosts an annual trade show, which attracts tens of thousands of attendees from all

over the world.

Major Christian general-interest print publications include Christianity Today,

Guideposts, Today’s Christian, World, Christian History, Christian Century, and Discipleship

Journal. Specific publications also exist for denominations such as the Southern Baptist

Convention, which has a whole network of publications like the On Mission magazine.

Examples of ministry or denominational publications are Ministries Today and Outreach

magazine, Presbyterian Today, Presbyterian Record, Today’s Pentecostal Evangel, and Baptists

Today.

Social Media Positioning

Between print media, wire services, social networks, radio interviews and TV

appearances, there are plenty of opportunities available to promote and market informational

products. The challenges some authors face are: 1) They are new to the industry and 2) They are

not well known in the market place. Let’s face the truth. It is hard getting the public’s attention if

your budget is small, and your industry is crowded with competition. In addition to the stiff

competition, the amount of work that is required to run a successful positioning campaign may

seem overwhelming.

In the past, traditional publishers used their large budgets to push a book to best seller

status overnight. Today, both the large and the small publishing companies reverts the enormous

responsibility of marketing and selling informational products back to the preneurs. No one

should carry this tremendous burden alone. No one should feel rejected. Social mediapreneurs

need help. You need a guide to help you navigate through the maze called strategic positioning.

Social Campaign Strategy

Social media positioning is the process of communicating your unique selling proposition

on the internet in social communities like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Linkedin and Ning.

Preneurs learn how to use social applications like: Google calendar, Delicious social book-

marking services, Diggs content syndicator, Flickr’s online photo application, Wikis content

aggregators, BlogTalkRadio podcast platform, GodTube and YouTube video channels.

Using Social Networks for Viral Marketing

The old ways of branding and getting publicity can seem unproductive. It is hard getting

past the gatekeepers who control the media outlets. Social media positioning is your greatest

asset in building online relationships, attracting potential customers and building brand

awareness. Social media positioning helps you bypass the gatekeepers. In SMP, you’re in the

driver’s seat. You create your own success. Social media positioning is the best step-by-step

platform to help you connect with a growing target audience and communicate your message to

the right people.

Online social networks are virtual communities that connect people together in a mass

audience through social websites. Users have the ability to send and receive pictures, send instant

messages, video clips and music in a global networked environment. Social communities create

an unparalleled universe where users can employ information to position their brands in the

Christian marketplace.
SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 26

Review Questions:

Which online social community would you find your audience? (ex: Facebook,
LinkedIn, GodTube, Christian Singles.)

Creating Your Own Space

The energy source that flows through virtual social networks is synergetic. Picture an

expressway during rush hour with traffic traveling. Like moving traffic, virtual social networks

are vibrant and full of life. Networks transport information like vehicles transport passengers.

These digital automobiles are fueled by human ingenuity. People rush to express their creativity,

share their space with peers, and socialize with associates, friends, fans and family members.

People rush to spread a spinet of good news.

Remember, building your online social community is not about selling products. It is about

building meaningful relationships and expanding your brand to generate social capital. Social

capital can provide wealth or it can build friendships -- depending on what you give back. The

focal point is giving three times the amount of value that you receive. If you follow this

principle, you will prosper.

There are four different types of online networking to focus on

1. Blogging
2. Micro-blogging
SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 27

3. Profile communities
4. Video communities

Blogging

There are a number of reasons why authors should start a blog: communicate your book’s

marketing message; promote your book to a larger global audience; connect with potential

readers; share your thoughts with the universe. These are just a few.

The question most authors ask is how do you get started blogging?

Here’s how:

1. Identify what you want to achieve.

Most bloggers fail to maintain an ongoing blog because they don’t have a solid plan. At a

minimum, you should write down your goals (what you hope to achieve through blogging).

Next, create a basic plan to help you achieve your goal. Your plan should answer questions such

as, why you are starting a blog? How many hours will you devote to blogging? What time of the

day will you blog? How many people do you want to reach? What type of readers would you like

to reach? How long will you keep your blog going? What do you hope to obtain as an end result?

These are all valid questions that you should answer before you start blogging.

2. Identify your target audience.

In today’s global society, there are billions of people who connect to the Internet:

Businesses, banks, libraries, social communities, churches, schools, and universities. The

Internet provides the opportunity to connect to a global Christian market. People living in

Australia, China, Canada, France or Rome could stop in and read your blog. Your blog is

accessible to billions of people - twenty four hours a day. Now, think about the global connection

for a few seconds.

SOCIAL MEDIA PRENEUR EBOOK COLLECTION 28

What type of readers will visit your blog: Children, adults, seniors? Who will read your text

and post their own comments: Police officers, dentist, doctors or politicians, parents, & friends?

How many people will peruse your blog and then leave immediately? There are two ways to

identify your target audience (1) observe and build a relationship with people who visit your blog

and post comments. (2) build an audience by inviting people to read your comments.

3. Write about topics you are passionate about.

Some authors find getting started difficult because they don’t know what to write about.

Then there are others who know what write about, and of course there are yet others who know

what to write about, but have a difficult time writing it. If you fall into any of these categories,

don’t worry. Asking yourself questions will help you get started: What category or genre is your

informational product? If you went to an online store, where would you find the information:

finance, sports, self-help, romance novels, and urban literature?

These industries are your passionate categories. After you have found your topic, read a

few trade magazines or newspapers that cover the same subject. Make a list of what stories are

hot and what stories seem cold. Take notes and form your own opinion about the stories.

Communicate your thoughts through your blog. Another idea: blog about your book tour, your

book marketing strategies, or blog about the release of your next book. The key is, write down

your topics, create your own opinion, plan your approach, and then take action. Bottom line:

Blog!
