News from Mt Pleasant Christian Church - http://mychristianchurch.org - June 2010

A Second Glance… by Cortney Walcott
John and Sharon Turner called Mt. Pleasant Christian Church (MPCC) their home for 33
years. John preached at Mt. Pleasant from 1972 to 2004. He began his preaching career at New
Union Christian Church in January of 1955. He was a preacher there for ten years. He then
preached at Guthrie Christian Church for seven years. In 1972, John attended a men’s meeting at
Southside Christian Church and met some of the men from MPCC. Mt. Pleasant was in need of a
preacher so he was asked if he would preach for a few Sundays. He ended up staying for 33 years!
Although he served MPCC for 33 years, he preached for a total of 50 years without ever missing a
beat. John and Sharon’s church They have two daughters,

Along with many other things Sharon did in the church, she was the choir director nearly the
entire time spent at MPCC.
John’s health no longer allows him to preach, however, he misses it greatly. They currently
attend Old Union Christian Church in Fayetteville. He enjoys visiting with friends and family and it
helps keep his spirits up. Mt. Pleasant is very blessed to have had John and Sharon in our church
family for so many years.

The World without the Church

By Pastor Jon
Before Jesus was crucified He established the church during a
conversation that He had with Peter. That was 2000 years ago.
Today many take the church for granted or worse yet find the
church to be irrelevant. Because of this I thought it would be an
eye opener if we took the time to consider what the world would
be like if there was no church.

First, the world without the church would be a dark place. Jesus said that we are the light of the
world, a city set on a hill that cannot be hid." (Matt 5:14) Those who have taken these words of
Jesus to heart have fed the hungry, operated hospitals, taken care of orphans, and brought
education to the illiterate all the while being motivated by the Holy Spirit, not fame or fortune. In
doing so they have brought a light to the world around them.
The members of the Lord's Church also hold one another accountable for their actions. The Apostle
Paul said, "Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently"
(Gal 6:1). If we didn't have brothers and sisters in Christ to help keep us in check and to remind us
when the "gift of God needs to be stirred up" (2 Tim 1:6) the light within us would grow dimmer and
dimmer and the world would become a darker place.

During the tribulation period the world is going to be an even darker place because the anti-Christ
and Satan are going to have free reign. Currently the Holy Spirit working through the Lord's church is
holding back the "lawless one". When Paul was writing to the church in Thessalonica the apostle
Paul said that the anti-Christ would be revealed when the one who restrains him is removed. (2
Thess 2:7-10) This will happen at the rapture, when the trumpet of the Lord sounds and the church is
called home. The world without the church would be a dark place because the church is currently
holding back the free reign of Satan through the preaching of righteousness in a world that is
overcome with sin.

The world without the church would also be a lonely place. When the early church began we are told
that they ate their bread from house to house and had all things in common (Acts 2:46). They also
helped to bear one another's burdens through support and prayer (Gal 6:2). This type of fellowship
and unconditional love is still being practiced in the Lord's church today. Some of our closest friends
are our brothers and sisters in Christ. When heartache comes, the church is where we turn. When
sickness comes and we are laid up in the hospital it is to the Lord's church that we turn. Even when
death comes knocking on the door it is the church where we find comfort and are surrounded by
support that comes from our brother and sisters. The Lord established the church to be family, where
we love one another, support one another and stand with one another through thick and thin. Without
the church the world would be a lonely place.

It is sad to imagine a world without the church, which is why I am glad that I will be taken to be in the
clouds with the Lord and His church when the trumpet sounds. If you are reading this article and you
have taken the church for granted, it is my prayer that you will see the importance of the church in
our world and do everything in your power to see the Lord's church prosper until He returns.

Alli McClary is the daughter of Butch and Marla McClary. She has attended Mt. Pleasant
Christian Church her entire life, participating in youth group activities, Sunday School, Bible
School, Camps, and much more.
During her Jr. and Sr. year of high school, Alli attended Vocation School for Cosmetology.
She will earn her license this summer after completing the final course. After that, she plans on
attending Ivy Tech to further her career in art. Some of Alli’s interests are listening to music,
drawing, crafting jewelry, being outdoors, and spending time with friends.

Cody Fluke graduated from Edgewood High School. During his time at Edgewood he was
in show choir for a total of five years. In the 8th grade he joined Mini Warehouse. During high
school he was in New Edition (4years) and Music Warehouse (3years). Cody was an outstanding

his academics, Cody was in several clubs. He was a member of Student Council, Mustang
Mentors, Leadership Academy, Key Club, English Academic Superbowl, FACS Club (vice-

auditioning for the Purdue Men's Varsity Glee Club on June 1st. He will find out this summer if he
has made the club.
As Cody leaves Edgewood and begins his transition in to college life, he is taking
advantage of the break he has for summer. He will be traveling to Germany this summer for two
weeks. However, this won’t be the first time. Last summer he spent seven weeks there!

Bloomington North

Jacob Jones is the son of Jim Jones and the step son of Kathy Jones. He was born and
raised in Bloomington. During those 18 years, he and his dad raced go karts starting when he was
8 yrs. old until he was 16. Jake looks on those years as a great bonding experience with his dad
Jim Jones. Other hobbies that Jake has are hunting. He can be found in his deer blind in the wee
hours of the morning, come Fall. He likes to bowl with his family and going to the movies. He
likes to spend time with his step-brother, Kristopher, as they get along really well and always find
crazy ways to occupy their days together. They go to the mall or the driving range too. He likes
spending time with his step mom, Kathy. She helps to keep him motivated even when he just
'wants to be lazy'.
Now that Jake has graduated, he plans to attend Vincennes University and major in John
Deere Diesel and Ag. Tech. He enjoys working on tractors, cars and trucks. Hopefully it will all
pay off one day and he can have his own farm with cattle and have his own John Deere shop.
He also enjoys church. It has been his 'ROCK' whenever he has needed it. He enjoys the
fellowship and the great sermons from Pastor Jon because of the love and forgiveness from our
wonderful GOD.
