In the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare we see a very
complex character, which is Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth changes throughout the play. She is initially a cruel and controlling woman planning the murder of King Duncan. Later on guilt overtakes her and she becomes weak and soft hearted. So when you think about her, you think of a cruel and evil woman and you wouldn't fell sorry for her. This essay will prove that we should actually feel sorry for Lady Macbeth and have sympathy for her. Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are initially a team. When Lady Macbeth first reads the letter her husband sent to her, about the witches' prophecies, she instantly wants Macbeth to become king and gain power. Lady Macbeth says "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be what thou art promised:" This shows that Lady Macbeth wants her husband to become, because she knows that's what he wants as well. However she considers the fact that her husband is such a gentle and caring person.
When we first meet Lady Macbeth in Act 1 scene 5, she is reading a
letter that Macbeth has sent her, and he tells her of the witches. Lady Macbeth then becomes entranced and enraptured by the way he talks about the witches, “Thane of Cawdor, by which title, before these weird sisters saluted me and referred me to the coming on of time with `Hail King that shalt be”. This line that Shakespeare has used here states that Macbeth is going to be the next King. As she reads on Macbeth then says, “Yet do I fear thy nature, It is too full o'th'milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way”. This means Macbeth will let chance and fate have its own way and he shall not speed the process up. But Lady Macbeth does not see this way as she sees an opportunity to take the crown and believes that Macbeth will do this for her. Shakespeare also shows through out the play that when Lady Macbeth is foul, Macbeth is fair, and when Macbeth is foul, Lady Macbeth is fair. Here we see that Lady Macbeth is foul as she is so desperate to have power.
however, if you think of it in another way, Lady Macbeth just wants
her husband to happy; she knows that Macbeth wants to be king so she wants to see his dreams come true. Macbeth does tell Lady Macbeth "There shall be done a deed of dreadful note. "Yet do I fear thy nature; it is too full o' the milk of human kindness to catch the nearest way. The fact that she wasn't aware of the murder of Banquo and Macduff's family could mean she didn't agree to it. However as the story progresses and Lady Macbeth's character is fully revealed, it is reasonable to feel sorry for her. " Lady Macbeht has completely broken down and everything is haunting her. This is why it is haunting her that they are dead. This confirms that Lady Macbeth isn't an evil lady; an evil lady wouldn't have problems sleeping or a guilty conscience. They were partners in love and crime, and now they weren't partners at all. All this guilt has driven her crazy to point where she becomes suicidal. Lady Macbeth knows she has to take control now in order for them to be successful " He that's coming must be provided for: and you shall put this night's great business into my dispatch which shall to all our nights and days come give solely sovereign sway and masterdom. All she wanted what was best for her and her husband and she was willing to do anything to make Macbeth happy. Personally I have sympathy for Lady Macbeth, and truly believe she isn't such a bad person as she is portrayed to be. There were many reasons that allowed me to fell sorry for Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth shouldn't be penalized for something she did not do.
