Module
Introduction
This USB to serial converter is based on FT232 from FTDI. It gives out all 8 pins of the
serial port at user selectable 3.3 or 5V logic levels. It has Transmit and Receive indicator data
LEDs. It is most suitable for serial communication where data flow control is important.
Since all the pins of the module are available at 5V / 3V3 and TTL / CMOS levels it can also
be used for ISP (In System Programming) applications for microcontrollers such as NXP’s
ARM7 (LPC 2148, LPC2138…), 8051 (P89V51RD2….) etc. It has four mounting holes
which makes it easy to integrate in your design. It can also provide 5V 400mA and 3.3V
30mA supply for powering external device. Board is made up of two layers PTH PCB for
giving extra strength to the connectors.
Specifications
• USB powered
• Tx and Rx indicator LEDs
• Achievable data rates: 2400 to 115200 bps
• Serial pins available: TXD, RXD, CTS, DCD, DSR, DTR, RTS, RI and Ground
• 5V, 400mA and 3.3V, 30mA available for powering external device
• Two layer PTH PCB for giving extra strength to the connectors
• Used for serial communication involving flow control and for ISP for
microcontrollers which uses serial port
Connections:
Pin Description:
3V3 (Supply Voltage): Gives out 3.3V output. It can only supply maximum of 30mA. Do
not use this supply unless absolutely necessary.
5V (Supply Voltage): Gives out 5V supply from the USB port. It can supply current
depending on your PC’s USB port’s power configuration (high power / low power mode). As
a rule of thumb do not draw more than 100mA from the pin.
CD (Carrier Detect): This signal is used by a modem to signal that it has a made Connection
with another modem, or has detected a carrier tone.
RXD (Serial Data IN): Is serial data in pin. Receives Serial data from external TTL/CMOS
UART.
TXD (Serial Data OUT): Is serial data out pin. Transmit Serial data to external TTL/CMOS
UART.
RI (Supply Voltage): A modem toggles the state of this line when an incoming call rings
your phone.
Note:
If logic level selection jumper is absent USB to Serial TLL/CMOS Logic Module will
not work.
