Famous Persona From Gujarat

Originally I wanted to compile a list of famous persons from Kathiawad. Then I thought that
if I concentrate only in Kathiawad region then I shall not be able to include Sriman Morarji
Desai [29 February 1896 –10 April 1995 born in Valsad], and Sardar [1] VallabhBhai Patel
[31 October 1875 – 15 December 1950 born in Nadiad, Kheda District[2] ] because they are
not from Kathiawad region of Gujarat. Other film personalities and literary person were also
from outside Kathiawad.
Morarji Desai Morarji [3] Desai was born in Anavil Brahmin family in Bhadeli, Valsad in
Bombay Presidency (now a District in Gujarat). He became 4th Prime Minister of India from
1977–79 and first Indian Prime Minister who did not belong to the Indian National Congress.
Before 1947 he became Bombay’s Home Minister and was later elected as Chief Minister of
Bombay State in 1952. Also, he was the first Indian ever to have received highest civilian
awards from India & Pakistan, the Bharat Ratna and Nishaan-e-Pakistan. (Dilip Kumar was
the second Indian to receive Nishaan-e-Pakistan Award).
I had to cover Gujarat State and not only Kathiawad to encompass a wider range and not
only famous film personalities. Even otherwise, I may not be able to locate as many famous
personalities from Kathiawad itself and therefore covering whole Gujarat State became
inevitable and also to encapsulate those who were born in Kathiawad/Gujarat but later on
moved out; and those who were born and brought up outside Gujarat but their parents are
originally from Gujarat.
Famous persona from Kathiawad are: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869
to 30 January 1948) was the pre–eminent political and ideological leader of India [4] from
Porbandar;
Muhammad Ali Jinnah Dec 25, 1876 to September 11, 1948) was a 20th century lawyer,
politician, statesman and the founder of Pakistan.
He is popularly and officially known in Pakistan as Quaid–e–Azam [5] and Baba–e–Qaum (‫بابائے‬
‫( )قوم‬Father of (Pakistan) Nation);
Dhirubhai Ambani (28 December 1932 to 6 July 2002) was an Indian rags–to–riches
business tycoon who founded Reliance Industries in Mumbai after the partnership with his
cousin Champaklal Damani ended in 1965 [This short-lived partnership firm called Majin
was to import polyester yarn and export spices to Yemen];
Harilal Upadhyay (January 22, 1916 to January 15, 1994) was a Gujarati author, considered
as one of the all–time great authors in the Gujarati language;
Jhaverchand Meghani– Author (August 28, 1896 to March 9, 1947) was noted poet,
litterateur, social reformer and freedom fighter from Gujarat) everyone likes the song ‘Raaj
Maane Lagyo Kasumbi No Rang’;
Jagdip Virani– Well–known Music Director of Gujarati films, a Singer, Painter and Lyricist
from Bhavnagar;
Morari Bapu– Saint, preacher;
Sadiq Ali Memon– A famous Actor in Karachi, Pakistan [6];
Kumar Saheb Ranjitsinhji Jadeja– Maharaja of Nawanagar and famous cricketer who played for
English cricket team;
Parveen Babi– (April 4, 1949 - 20 January 2005). She happens to be the first Indian actress
to have appeared on TIME magazine first cover page in the year 1976 [7]. She did her early
schooling in Aurangabad and later attended St. Xavier’s College, Ahmedabad. Her father
Vali Mohammed Babi, was an administrator with the Nawab of Junagadh;
Abbas Tyabji (1852–1936), the Grand Old Man of Gujarat, who had succeeded Mahatma
Gandhi as the national leader in the civil disobedience movement of 1930 after he was
arrested; Azim Premji–Wipro Technologies;
Narsi Mehta– poet [8] Narsi Bhagat (1414? –1481?) was a Nagar Community member poet–
saint or a bhakt. He is acclaimed as Adi Kavi (Sanskrit for “first among poets”) and his
bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Re Kahiye...” is Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite and has become
synonymous to him. Those who have false notions that everything in religion signify or be a
pictogram of something else, and that the reader must unveil the cipher and come up with
an “explanation” to each poem’s sense, will be perturbed by Narsinh Mehta’s poem or will
read his poems with fearful inconsiderateness. Narsinh Mehta’s work necessitates
concentrated absorption, mind's eye, and strangely elevated lenience for haziness. He was
born in Talaja, a place [9] located on national highway No: 8 in between Bhavnagar (50 km)
and Mahuva (40 km). In Junagadh, Narsinh Mehta lived in poverty with his wife and two
children. The Ruler of Ahmedabad area Mahmud Begada [10] (Mahmud Shah I) 1458 to1511,
invaded Junagadh [11] in 1467 and after many Muslim raids on Hindu regions, Junagadh was
annexed to the Gujarat Sultanate. Narsi Mehta thereafter went to Mangrol where, at the
age of 66, he is believed to have died. The crematorium at Mangrol is called NarSinh Nu
SmaShan;
Uchharangrai Navalshankar Dhebar (1905–1977) was active in India's struggle for
Independence, and later served as Chief Minister [12] of Saurashtra, and President of the
Indian National Congress [13]. As a freedom fighter who worked with Gandhiji. He was a
Nagar community member born on September 21 1905 in the hamlet of Gangajala, eleven
miles from Jamnagar [14]. Dhebar is also the name of a small village near Porbandar;
Dr. Jivraj Narayan Mehta– 29th August 1887, Amreli (Saurashtra), first Chief Minister of
Gujarat (Constituency: Amreli), obtained Doctor’s degree from Grant Medical College,
Bombay. M.D. & F.R.C.S. (London) and was awarded gold medal for standing first class first
in the M.D. Examination. He was the finest Indian Ambassador in Britain;
Nanji Kalidas Mehta– (Hindustani Rockefeller of Africa) (1887 to 1969). He was born in late
19th Century and continues to be owner of (tea plantation, a cotton ginnery, a sugarcane
plantation and a sugar factory) and prime properties in Porbandar The film actress Juhi
Chawla [15] is wife of his grandson Jai Mehta owner of Siddhi Cements, Ranavav (Near
Porbandar), and many other independent businesses;
Mulvantrai Himmatlal Mankad (12 April 1917 to 21 August 1978), better known as Vinoo
Mankad was an effective batsman and slow left arm orthodox bowler (played in 44 Tests)
and made 2109 runs at an average of 31.47 including five Test centuries with a top score
of 231. Mankad’s all–round performance salvaged India’s pride in a series where they were
heavily overmatched. Mankad was the first player in more than 30 years to score a 100 and
take five wickets in the same Test and the first Indian to achieve this feat (His son Ashok
Mankad (12 October 1946 – 1 August 2008) was a famous cricketer. A right-handed
batsman, he played for India in 22 Test [16] matches.); Another famous cricketer from this

Madhvani family– (Business tycoons in Africa)– In 1912, Muljibhai Madhvani (1894 – 1958) a
Family Patriarch, had arrived in Jinja when he was 18 years old and later became a
matchless businessman, Mayur Madhvani is Muljibhai’s fifth and youngest son who got
married to film actress Mumtaz on 29 May 1974 [17];
Sarabhai Family–Kathiawadi business family, belonging to Shrimal Jain community. Its
members include: Ambalal Sarabhai was [18] in the 1940s and 1950s, the owner of the
Sarabhai Textile Mills in Ahmedabad–at the time one of India's largest textile companies,
Anasuyaben (his sister), Gandhian freedom fighter, Mridula Sarabhai (his daughter),
freedom fighter and Indian politician, Vikram Sarabhai (his son) co–founder of the Indian
Space Research [19] Organization and Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Mrinalini
Sarabhai (his daughter–in–law) (born 1918), [20] noted danseuse, Kartikeya Sarabhai (his

Nautamlal Bhagavanji Mehta, businessman and Nagar Sheth of Jetpur (2 September 1879–
2 September 1968) was a freedom fighter and a strong supporter of Mahatma Gandhi;
Pranjivan Jagmohan Mehta, known [22] as Dr. P.J. Mehta, a doctor [23] who aided Mahatma
Gandhi when he first went to England;
Sri Jaisukhlal Hathi, Former Cabinet Minister in Panditji’s cabinet

Lalshankar Hathi, Advocate On Record, Supreme Court of India, passed away in Baroda on
November 25, 2002, aged 88. Sri K L Hathi was a famous freedom fighter and Legal
Remembrancer for Gujarat State. Earlier he appeared in Federal Court of India. After 1947
the Supreme Court used to function from few rooms allotted to it in the Parliament of India.
From 1961 onwards he practiced as Advocate On Record in the Supreme Court Advocate
(The present Supreme Court building was commissioned later).
Padma Shree Professor Dr. Upendra V, Baxi, former Vice [24] Chancellor of Delhi University
(originally from Saurashtra), and there are many others who served the nation as freedom
fighters, national freedom movement supporters, Bankers, Civil Servants, and
Administrators.
Most Gujarati lot in these parts took to trading as main business and very few persons from

became known like Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (December 30, 1887 - February 8, 1971)
was an Indian independence movement activist, politician, writer and educationist from
Gujarat state. A lawyer by profession, he later turned to literature and politics.
There are certain nationally famous Gujaratis who not born in Gujarat and they also did not
operate from Gujarat, like: Sir Pherozeshah Mehta was born in Bombay on 4th August 1845.
He went to England to specialise in law and there he was influenced by Dadabhai Naoraji
who became his political guru. On being called to the Bar in 1868 he returned to India and
was soon in the forefront of Bombay's legal luminaries.
His eloquent plea for municipal reform was later embodied in the Act of 1872 and Muncipal
Act of 1988. He became the father of Bombay's Municipal Charter, founder of its glorious
civic tradition.
Sir Pherozeshah Mehta was elected President of the Corporation on no fewer than four
occasions 1884, 1885, 1905 and 1911. He had close ties with Gujarat as well.

Sir Harilal Jekisundas Kania was the first Chief Justice of India. He held office from 14
August 1947 to 5 February 1951. Prior to holding the office as the Judge, Supreme Court of

Gujarat High Court was established on 1st May, 1960 when former State of Bombay
bifurcated into State of Maharastra and State of Gujarat. Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sunderlal
Trikamlal Desai was the first Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court. (Hon’ble Mr. Justice K. T.
Desai, Hon’ble Mr. Justice J. M. Shelat, Hon’ble Mr. Justice N. M. Miabhoy and Hon’ble Mr.
Justice V. B. Raju were the first brother companion judges on the first Gujarat High Court

Sri J. A. Baxi was first Chief Justice of Saurashtra region. His son Commodor J J Baxi, a Naval
Architect designed a part of India’s first Naval Air Craft Carrier INS Vikrant.
Prominent Film Personalities
Famous film personalities from Gujarat State are: Asha Parekh [25] Known for her films in
Love in Tokyo and Teesri Manzil, the Sai Baba worshipper was born on (2 October 1942) in
Maharashtra. is an acclaimed actress, director, and producer. Her best period was from
1959 to 1973. Her Jain father was from Paldi near Pirana in Ahmedabad and her mother
was a Muslim lady.
Nirupa Roy (4 January 1931 to 13 October 2004) born as Kokila Kishorechandra Bulsara in
Valsad, Gujarat. She was married to Kamal Roy when she was 15, and moved to Mumbai.
She played leading roles in her early films, and started playing mother roles during the
1970–80s. In 50 years of filmy life she acted in more than 250 films. This film was made
three times from 1927 to 1948.
After its first release in 1927 director Chandulal Shah remade GunaSundari in 1934. The
film was again remade in 1948 by Ratilal Hemchand Punater. Nirupa Roy made her debut
as its heroine when GunaSundari was made for the third time. It is story of a poor woman
who is disliked by her husband for her moral stand. The woman finally lands in street where
she meets with a person who is just like her – a social outcast. The story ends here.
The near Hindi version of this film was Akhand Saubhagyabati starred Asha Parekh in 1963.
Her TV production ’Jyoti’ was a household show for a long time.
About recent Gujarati films, Suresh M Thakkar’s Sajan Haiye Sambhre, Gormano Var
Kesariyo and Dikro Kahu Ke were huge hits.
Dimple Kapadia [26] (born 8 June 1957) She was discovered by Raj Kapoor who first initiated
her in his 1973 movie Bobby. After hiatus (interval) of 11 years Dimple appeared in Zakhmi
Sher (1984) with Jeetendra (Kapoor).

Tina Munim (February 11, 1957) was [28] born in Mumbai in Gujarati Svetambara Jain family
(lived in Dhaka, Bangladesh). Her forefathers were royal merchants in the service of the
Burmese kings under British rule. She was discovered by Dev Anand after she represented
India at the International Teen Princess contest in Aruba, and won the Miss Photogenic and
Miss Bikini awards.
Rupa Divetia [29] has a very long continuing history with film and stage shows in Hindi and
Gujarati;
Prachi Desai (born 12 September 1988) an Indian film and television actress. She is best
known as Bani Walia the TV celebrity (Kasamh Se. Zee TV). Prachi was born in Surat,
Gujarat. She studied in St Joseph Convent, Panchgani and completed her schooling till ninth
grade in Surat. After that, she went to Pune for higher studies. She studied at Sinhagad
College, Vadgaon, Pune.
Pooja Gaur is a celebrated television actress. She was born in Gujarat in the city of
Ahmedabad on 1 June 1991. She plays the title role in the serial Mann Kee Awaaz Pratigya
on STAR Plus.
Tanvi Vyas Miss India Earth title winner of 2008. She was born on 30 September 1985 in
Mehlol, a village near Godhra, Gujarat, and grew up in the Gujarati city of Vadodara. At the
time of the Miss India pageant She was studying graphic design at M.S. University. She has
also acted in Eppadi Manasukkul Vandhai (How You Came Into My Heart), a South Indian
film directed by P.V. Prasath.
Laxmi Chhaya (Mar Diya Ja E, Ya Chhood Diya Jaaye; Bol Tere Saath Kya Suluk Kiya JaE [30])
A Kathiawadi actress (expired in the year 2004) who was most successful and all her films
were great hits.
Honey Chhaya, and Harsh Chhaya [31] (married to a Bengali actress Sunita Sengupta), are
originally from Kathiawad. Neela Devi Gohil daughter of Royal Family of Bhavnagar got
married to Shamsher Raj Kapoor son of Prithvi Raj Kapoor or popularly known as Shammi
Kapoor in 1969{during filming of Teesri Manzil (1966) his first wife Geeta Bali died of small
pox}.
Actors like Jackie Shroff (born 1 February 1960) In his 28 filmy years he has acted in over
150 films [32].
Paresh Rawal (born 30 May 1950) was born in Paliad, Gujarat. He married Swaroop Sampat
an actress & winner of Miss India contest in 1979.
Pooja Bhatt [33] was born [34] on 24 Feb.1972 to film Director Mahesh Bhatt of Porbandar and
Kiran Bhatt (aka Loraine Bright). She is of Gujarati descent on her father's side. She has
Scottish, Armenian and Burmese ancestry on her mother's side. She is the step daughter of
Soni Razdan, an actress. She has a brother, Rahul Bhatt and step sisters Shaheen and Alia.
Emraan Hashmi is another famous cousin who is a Bollywood actor Sharman Joshi.
Satish Ravilal Shah, of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai fame and a wide range of Hindi films. The list
of his documented acts is very long. A very successful character actor.
Ameesha Patel was born on 9 June 1975. She is daughter of Amit Patel and Asha Patel,
sister of Ashmit Patel and granddaughter of famous lawyer–politician Barrister Rajni Patel
who was the Congress Pradesh Committee President of Bombay.
Tulip Joshi (born 11 September 1979) Joshi was born in Mumbai to a Gujarati father and
Armenian Lebanese mother.
Ayesha Takia (10 April 1986) Ayesha was born in Chembur Mumbai, Maharashtra to a
Gujarati father, Nishit and a half British and half Maharashtrian mother, Faridah.
Anang Desai [35] famous for his character acting for the past more than three decades.
Shruti Seth born on 18 December 1977. She did her schooling from Ashok Academy and
graduated from St. Xavier's College Ahmedabad with a degree in Economics and
Commerce. She is married to film director Danish Aslam.
Himesh Reshammiya was born in Bhavnagar to Vipin Reshammiya & Madhu Reshammiya.
He directed the album Tere Naam in 2003. After that, he released, Aashiq Banaya Aapne,
as a singer, and songs like Tera Suroor, Zara Jhoom Jhoom and Tanhaiyan went on to
become hits.
Farooq Shaikh [36] (born 25 March 1948 (His wife Rupa Jain is a Lady known to Gujarati
populace). Farooq Shaikh has worked with directors like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali,
Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Ketan Mehta.
Most successful character actress Bindu (born 17 January 1951) was nearly everyone
accepted her from day one from 1970s. She acted in over 160 movies in a career that
spanned four decades. Nanubhai Desai father of Bindu was a film producer and her mother
name was Jyotsna Desai. She was born in Hanuman Bhagda village in Valsad.
Disha Wakani [37], and other famous personalities connected to Gujarat are: Lily Patel,

Prachi Shah [43] has acted in film: Isi Life Mein (2010) and on Television in the following

1986). She is best known for playing the role of Tapasya Thakur (Tapu) in the popular

heroine in Kollywood or Tamil film industry. She was crowned Miss Surat during the year
1998 and was a contestant in the 2001 Miss India pageant.
Kalpen Modi, popularly known as Kal Penn [58] is known name in Hollywood. Dev Patel is
world [59] famous name for his work in Slumdog Millionaire movie.
Ben Kingsley, a winner [60] of Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in title the role of
the film Gandhi (film) also originates from Gujarat. Dilip Joshi [Bapu Tame Kamal Kari] who

is the Jethalal Gada in Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma. He has acted in many popular
Hindi and Gujarati films,
Sanjay Gadhvi born: 22 November 1965 is a writer [62] and director from Surendranagar,
Gujarat, and Shravan, etc., are well known personalities who have contributed to Hindi film
industry popularly known as Bollywood. These were some of the famous personalities from
Gujarat. Maybe the reader has heard about few names from the above list.
Because films have been influencing thought processes of all classes & masses and also,
films reflect public morality of the day, I have decided to talk about films from Gujarat.
There exists no special distinction like Kathiawadi films or Gujarati films. Most Gujarati films
are generally based on Kathiawadi theme.
Even most of the Gods were active once upon a time towards Kutch and Kathiawad region
thousands of years ago or as it seems because most of the godly settlements are in
Kathiawad or Kutch region [upto Sindh Province in Pakistan].
In ancient times Kathiawad was full of interesting events ranging from Lord Krishna to
iniquitous Dacoits [63] to revered Saints, Love Stories and Poets like Akha Bapa [64] & Maha
Kavi Sunderlal Betai of Dwarka (his son Dr. Ramesh Betai was recipient of National Awards
for Literature, Company Secretary J R Betai, etc.).
Poetess Mirabai the pride of Mewar and Marwar had spread her memo of love and
dedication to Lord Krishna. Mira Bai’s fame spread through out Gujarat only by virtue of her
immortal Muse that continued to shower praise of God’s brilliance.
In 1932 first Gujarati film Narsinh Mehta in the category of Saint Film Genre was directed by
Nanubhai Vakil. In 1935 Ghar Jamai was directed by Homi Master. Then came Kariyavar,
directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi, and the film Vadilona Vanke directed by Ramchandra Thakur.
Gadano Bel was directed by Ratibhai Punatar, and Leeludi Dharti, was inspired by the novel
of same name by Chunilal Madia, directed by Vallabh Choksi These were films on problems
of modernisation, realism and reformism.
In 1975 Tana Riri was directed by Chandrakant Sangani. The first cinemascope film of
Gujarati cinema in 1976 Sonbai ni Chundadi was directed by Girish Manukant.
Bhavni Bhavai was released in the year 1980 directed by Ketan Mehta Born in 1954–
Navsari in [65] Gujarat. Ketan Mehta did his schooling from Sardar Patel [66] Vidyalaya, New
Delhi and later graduated in film direction from Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Fine camerawork of film Bhavni Bhavai won awards (National Award for Best Feature Film
on National Integration, National Film Award for Best Art Direction for Meera Lakhia, and
award at the Nantes festival in France).
In 1992 Hun Hunshi Hunshilal was directed by Sanjiv Shah was sought to be post-modern.
Many famous actors have worked in Gujarati film industry like Sanjeev Kumar [67] (Hari Har
Jariwala) (9 July 1938 – 6 November 1985 from Surat), Rajendra Kumar (He was a non
Gujarati acting in Gujarati films).
Non Gujarati actress Rita Bhaduri acted [68] in many Gujarati films. She did an excellent job
on screen.
Kiran Kumar is famous[69] film star in Gujarat a Mumbai–based Kashmiri Indian actor who
has acted in many Gujarati & Hindi films. He is the son of veteran character actor Jeevan.
Upendra Trivedi the Gujarati film actor[70] is also famous for portraying Ravan in Ramanand
Sagar’s television series Ramayan. He also acted in some episodes of “Vikram Aur Betaal”
also directed by Ramanand Sagar.
Arvind Trivedi is the brother of Upendra Trivedi.
Aruna Irani [71], Asrani (born 1 January 1941 in Jaipur) [72], Naresh Kanodia is one of the most

at Palitana, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat was a noted producer-director-screenwriter of Hindi
cinema, who made such films as Ram Rajya (1943), Baiju Bawra (1952), Goonj Uthi Shehnai
(1959) and Himalaya Ki God Mein (1965). He founded Prakash Pictures, a film production
company and Prakash Studios in Andheri East, Mumbai, which produced 64 feature films.

Nanabhai Bhatt (born June 12, 1915 in Porbandar [77] – died April 24, 1999 in Mumbai)
[father of film director Mahesh Bhatt] was a well-known Indian film director and producer of
Bollywood and Gujarati cinema, known for making over a hundred fantasy and
mythological films, including Mr. X (1957), Zimbo Comes to Town (1960), Lal Qila (1960)
and the blockbuster Kangan (1959) starring Nirupa Roy and Ashok Kumar. His first film,
Muqbala (1942), was the first to feature the double-role or "twins" phenomenon in Indian
cinema, wherein lead actress Fearless Nadia alternated between the good sister and the
gangster's moll. The formula was subsequently emulated in numerous Hindi films.
Manmohan Desai (26 February 1937 to 1 March 1994) [78], Mehboob Khan was born
Mehboob Khan [79] Ramzan Khan in Bilimoria, Gujarat in Gandevi Taluka of Baroda State. He
started as an assistant in the silent era and an extra in the studios of the Imperial Film
Company of Ardeshir Irani, before directing his first film, Judgement of Allah (1935), when
he started he started directing films for the Sagar Film Company. Directorial features like
Aurat followed, with the studios Sagar Movietone and National Studios. In 1945, Khan left
set up his own production house, Mehboob Productions [80]. As a director he gave us: Son of

Alka Yagnik was born in Kolkata on March 20, 1966 to a Gujarati family. Her mother Shubha
Yagnik was a singer [92] of Indian classical music. At the age of 6, she started singing for
Calcutta Radio [93], Manhar Udhas [94], The Rajkot born Pankaj Udhas [95].
Falguni Pathak [96], Himesh Reshammiya are well known singers of this industry.
Laxmikant and Pyrelal [97], Kalyanji and Anandji [98], Salim & Suleman [99], Ismail Darbar (1

Kumari Harshad Ba daughter[101] of Jam DigvijaySinhji [102] was coordinator with INTACH at

originally guided by Smt. Pupul Jaykar [103].Pupul Jayakar, better known as India’s “cultural

include all the names here. Deepika Chikhalia played Sita [104] in Ramanand Sagar’s hit
television series Ramayan. She was elected as Member of Parliament in the Indian Lok
Sabha from Baroda constituency in 1991 as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate.
Many great brains from Kutchh and Kathiawad could not be included for want of precise
information or on account of my lack of knowledge. Also I could not find many details about
those whose name is not attached to a foot note.
I therefore encourage other readers of this note to write about notable personalities if any
one has personal knowledge or personal interactions. For example, if any reader meets a
Gujarati celebrity a brief narrative of such a meeting with a Gujarati Celebrity may be
documented, e.g., meeting with IAS, IPS, Lady Asha Parekh in Mahuva [or where ever] or
Lady Mumtaz or Lady Juhi Chawla in Porbandar [or where ever] or a brief meet with

Detailed note may not be written and a brief description of a meet with any Gujarati
celebrity would be just great for a reader. For example local populace at Jamnagar can
write about meeting with Jam Sahib (with current photographs); or Sri DaulatSinhji P.

the case in all places where a Palace or Durbargadh buildings are there. His Highness
Maharaja Rana Shri Sir Natwarsinhji Bhavsinhji Sahib Bahadur, KCSI (born 1901-06-30,
Porbandar, Gujarat - died 1979-10-04, Porbandar) was the Maharaja of Porbandar
belonging to Jethwa dynasty. He was the only son of H.H. Maharaja Rana Shri Bhavsinhji
Madhavsinhji Sahib Bahadur, Rana Sahib of Porbandar, by his third wife, H.H. Maharani
Bama Sahib Ramba Kunverba Sahiba.
To introduce Gujarat or famous persons from Gujarat [by way of brief write up] one can
take good photograph of any VIP or a Majestic building (even a Circuit House, Dak Bunglow,
Municipal Commissioner’s regal Bungalow, grandiose School Building or a magnificent Post
Office Building), etc. Such introduction to Gujarat would surely be a great step forward in
the direction of properly introducing Gujarat State (its parts) to a reader.
Bhavnagar is known as the cultural capital of Saurashtra. Bhavnagar has housed many
poets and writers of Gujarati literature. Among them are Meghani [109] , Kavi Kant [110] ,
Prajaram Raval [111], Dula Kag [112] , Subodh Mehta [113] .
Bhavnagar is a great center for education that experiments the new trends in rural and
liberal child education. Liberal women’s education was born in Bhavnagar through the
efforts of illustrious educator-social reformer Amrutlal Dani. The vibrant [114] cluster of
women’s schools and colleges today is due to his devoted and pioneer work.
The oldest institution of higher education in Bhavnagar is the Samaldas [115] College. The
father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi studied here in 1884 AD. The Bhavnagar University is
well known in the region for having 23,000 students, 17 post graduate departments
including MBA, MCA, MSc, engineering, and medical colleges.

Some of the major educational institutions of Bhavnagar are Shree Dakshinamurti Vinay
Mandir, BM Commerce High School, P. P. Institute of Science, Shamaldas Arts & Mehta
Commerce College, Shantilal Shah High School (Alfred High School), Sanatan Dharm high
school etc.
As per the 2001 census, Bhavnagar had a population of 510,958. Males constitute 52% of
the population and females 48%. Bhavnagar has an average literacy rate of 72% of which
59.5% are males and 77% are females.
Before I close I feel the need to mention the names of Tana [116] Riri the singers of
Vadnagar. This town (not in Kathiawad) is a known [117] settlement and worship place of
ancient Nagar Community and also it is the birth place of Sri Narendra [118] Modi (born 17
September 1950). It has the 15th century ‘Hatkeshver Mahadev’ temple. HatKesh is a form
of Shiv worshiped by Nagar Community.
Those days, one of the Nav Ratna of The Emperor Akbar, the Sangeet Samrat Tansen sang
Raag Deepak in the Durbar of King Akbar in New Delhi. The adverse side effect of this Raag
was felt and Tan Sen’s body continued to feel burning sensations. Raag Deepak had ignited
inner heat in his body which was not cooling with the passage of time (as it ordinarily ought
to). He could not cure this burning sensation and increasing body heat.
He was informed that the only antidote to burning reaction caused by Raag Deepak was
hearing Raaga Malhar in pure form which would bring rainfall during singing session to cool
him.
Raag Malhar was a specialty of two sisters of a Nagar family living in Vadnagar. Their
names were Tana and Riri. Those days conservative Nagar family was not commercializing
any specialty of their family. Nagar [119] means just Nagar cast. Nagar is not exactly a
Brahmin nor a Nagar Brahmin.
Nagar is a separate caste or community having all rituals and ceremonies similar to the
Greeks. It is believed that ancestors of present day Nagar community members were army
chefs working for Greeks [Alexander the Great (r.336-323 BC maybe referred in some
context by the historian Herodotus [120].] All history and geography and sanskar and all is
great but nothing can progress in continued poverty.
The early settlement of Nagar was on bank of river Kapila flowing from hills of Aravalli
Mountain range crossing Vadnagar. It fed water to a lake, known as Sharmishtha which is
still very much live lake. ‘Sharmistha’ is the name of Clan Goddess of Chhaya Family – also
known as Matri Mata or Osam Mata.
Tana & Riri obliged Tansen and sang Raag Malhar due to which Tansen was immediately
relieved and cured. The Emperor Akbar upon hearing this summoned Tana Riri
to his Durbar. The conservative Nagar community sisters were in a great dilemma.
If they do not obey the Emperor and refuse to comply with the summons to sing in Durbar
then due to such disrespect whole village will be antagonized, and if they do obey the
summons and sing in the Durbar of Emperor Akbar then their Nagar Community morals (as
prevalent those days) would be violated.
The inbuilt morality or genetic unfolding (the inherited characteristic trait) did not permit
them to sing in (Public) Durbar. They solved this dilemma by putting an end to their life by
drowning in a nearby [121] well.
Considering this note to be my first attempt of documenting famous persona in Gujarat [122]
I would say that it’d be highly desirable and appreciated by me, and probably others as
well, if a reader continues giving narrative details of one personality very well known to
him. Even a successful Gujarati NRI settled abroad can be the topic of a brief note to
enable others to learn from such good examples (Reverse is also true if reasons of downfall
are known in order that others can learn from known mistakes that lead to dark holes).
Or, for example, a reader may know the Ruler of Jasdan Sri Ala Khacher Saheb. One can
write about Jasdan and contributions of present residents or the royal family.
I just thought of Jasdan and therefore I mentioned “Jasdan”. There is no particular reason
for giving this name. I have not yet seen Jasdan. My paternal grandmaother’s (Mrs.
Narmada Swadia married to Dr. Himatrai A. Chhaya) father Maganlal C. Swadia was Divan
of Jasdan way back when my GrandMom was young and unmarried. For that matter I could
have said HH Krishna KumarSinhji of Bhavnagar, or Rajkot Thakur Saheb.
Like wise all other erstwhile small kingdoms can be documented by few photographs of
that place and a write up with photographs of current royal family resident locally; or if
someone knows Aditi Mangaldas then [123] one can make a request her to give her dance
performance photographs [that are not published elsewhere] and write a few paragraphs
about your meeting with her and other family details that she may give about Sriman
Surendra Mangaldas, and so on. In due course, if many persons write such notes about a
place near to their residence (these days cell phones can take good photographs) then a
compilation of pretty good material can be a documented for future reference.

opposite Bhadar River was active in his fight against the Britishers in his own way. These Dacoits were criminals in the
books of the British rulers but Indians considered them heros and they were named BarWatia.
Kadu Makrani was a 19th century’s archetypal figure who was born and brought up in Makran, Balochistan. He rose as an
insurgent in Kathiawar, Gujarat, martyred and buried in Karachi, Sindh in 1887.
For example in early English history when Earl of Huntingdon’s property was taken away by John’s Regency Government,
he gathered together his retainers, went into Sherwood forest, and, under the name of Robin Hood, is to this day in
England a household word.
The primary object of Robin Hood was not to commit offences, although he practically did nothing else. His wish was to
create many impediments in judicial and administrative process of that part of kingdom to make governance of that
territory impossible. He succeeded and was thus able to recover from the central authority his sequestered lands and title.
Similarly, the “Girasia outlaws” of Saurashtra Peninsula acted on almost same lines all the time creating hindrance in
justice & administration of the territory occupied by the British. They were usually, although by no means always — for as
late as 1902 the Judicial Assistant convicted a band of Mahomedans who had gone out against Junagadh— Kathi
landholders who had been turned out of their villages by more powerful neighbours.

Khan introduced and helped establish the careers of many actors and actresses who went onto become big stars in the

Khan was known for having been influenced by Hollywood films and his films often featured lavish sets in the style of the

father was a liberal intellectual and senior officer in the Indian Civil Service, while mother came from a Gujarati Brahmin
family from Surat, where Pupul spent her yearly summer breaks. She had a brother, Kumaril Mehta and 4 sisters, Purnima,
Premlata, Amarganga and Nandini Mehta. Her father's work took the family to many parts of India, where she got the
opportunity to absorb local crafts and traditions early on in life. At the age eleven, she went to Banaras (Varanasi), where
she studied to a school started by Annie Besant, theosophist who was also active in Indian freedom movement,
subsequently he father got posted to Allahabad, where she first came in contact with Nehru family at age fifteen, as her
father was a friend of Motilal Nehru. Subsequently she became friends with daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi
She attended Bedford College in London before graduating from the London School of Economics in 1936. On returning
home she married Manmohan Jayakar, a barrister, and settled down in Bombay (now Mumbai).

Nagar means just pure Nagar from Vadnagar – it is a separate race & caste altogether in every respect and not
connected in any manner to any Bhramin clan. In fact Nagar those days used to be considered much above all other
castes. These days it is quite likely that Nagar community may need to be protected like a minority community or a tribe or
a backward community. The reason is poverty. There are very few Nagar community members (among Non Doctors, Non
Lawyers) who are rich. In fact I have not so far seen a rich Nagar family member. I have heard that “this” and “that” Nagar
parivar is very rich but when I actually “See” that Nagar parivar or the so called “rich” parivar I am slightly confused
because I have real rich friends in Delhi, Mumbai and five other countries and compared to them the “richness” of Nagar
‘rich’ parivar is no even comparable to pea nuts. But that is my opinion.
