CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CULTURE IN GERMANY
LANGUAGES- Germany is filled with different types of people. According to statistics, there are
approximately 7 million foreign people called themselves as ‘guest workers. The official language
of Germany is Standard German, with over 95% of the country speaking Standard German.
Main foreign languages: Minority first languages include:
English - 51% Sorbian – 0.09%
French – 15% Romani – 0/08%
Russian – 5% Danish – 0.06%
North Frisian – 0.01%
NORMS- First, people never make eye contact while walking on the street or using the subway.
Greetings are formal. A quick, firm handshake is the traditional greeting.Secondly, the "dress code"
is worth noting. You would never find a german wearing sweatpants and a hoodie to school like
most of us have done at one time or another. Germans are always dressed is a casual, semi-formal
attire. Last, when one walks into a shop, it is customary for that person to say "Guten Tag" (Good
day) to the shopkeeper. Nonetheless, if one does not say good day to the shopkeeper, he knows
instantly that the person is a tourist. If you are invited to a German's house, bring a gift such as
chocolates or flowers. Do not begin eating until the hostess starts or someone says 'guten appetit'
(good appetite).
VALUES- Germans share a common culture that units them, across continents and in many lands.
Being an fiercely independent people, Germans are known for their values of freedom, family,
responsibility and a strong work ethic.
BELIEFS-Whereas in1967,42% of the West Germans believedin Jesus as the son of God,today
only 29% believe this.Previously about two-thirds of the Germans surveyed maintained that Bible
was a word of God.Today only half of them believe this.25 years ago 54% of those attending Mass
believed in infallibility of the Pope-today only 36% do so.
