1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. Note: If Autorun is enabled, an
installation menu will appear automatically. Proceed to Step 3.
2. If the Installation Menu does not appear automatically, run D:\Setup.exe
where D:\ is your CD-ROM drive letter.
3. Select the desired components from the Installation Menu.
Macintosh
No installation is necessary.
Book Files
The Explorations in Computer Science book files are formatted in Portable
Document Format (PDF). Using Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can view and print a
PDF file exactly as it was created, without needing to have the same application
s
or fonts used to create the file.
The Adobe Acrobat Reader installer is included on this CD. If you do not
currently have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you can find
the Reader installation file in the Reader folder for both Windows and Macintosh
platforms.
Applets and Applications
This is the software that accompanies the book. (These instructions are geared
towards users of Microsoft Windows. However, since the software is all written i
n
Java, users of Linux, Unix and Macintosh should be able to adapt these
instructions easily.)
If you want to only run the applets, merely double click on "index.html" which w
ill
open your web browser and provide you with a list of the applets. The APPLETS
directory provides all the software necessary. You do not need to do anything to
these files in order to use them.
If you want to run an application, navigate into the APPLICATIONS and find the
desired program, for example LOGICGATES. Go into that directory and double
click on the "run_application.bat" which will start up the program as a standalo
ne
Java application.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The SOURCE directory is provided only in case you need to recompile the
original Java code. Most users will not need to even go into that directory.
These programs were written using only Java 1.1.8 features and AWT (the
Abstract Windowing Toolkit), which is considered inferior to the newer Swing
windowing system. This was done purely for compatibility reasons. Many Mac
users who have not yet migrated to MacOS X, and some Linux and Unix users,
would not have been able to run newer Java versions or Swing. In the future, thi
s
situation will surely change and the software may be updated.
