LOUIS RIEL BIOGRAPHY

HISTORY 30
MR. LETKEMAN’S CLASS
LOUIS RIEL BIOGRAPHY
Background to the Assignment

In class we have been talking about the race for the west, and how Sir John A
MacDonald was single-minded in uniting the colonies and claiming the west.
In claiming the west, MacDonald began building the Canadian Pacific Railway
(CPR) from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. One of the obstacles he
had to contend with was the negotiation of treaties with Canada’s First
Nations people who had been living in the west for thousands of years. In
many respects, the government made treaty agreements that they had not
fully intended to keep. They made the promises as the means to an end –
building the CPR and settling the west. These haphazard promises would
come back to haunt the MacDonald government in the man of Louis Riel, and
in the event of the Northwest Resistance of 1885.
