Preparation for class

At the end of each week’s class, I will tell you which text from the booklet is to
be discussed in the next week’s class. I will also give you a triggering question
related to that text which will also be posted on the online discussion forum.
Preparation for the class includes:
- To read the text of the week
- To reflect on your learning by filling the “Bilan des connaissances” form
- To complete a “Fiche de travail” for the text
- To work on the triggering question.

Marking
The Français Oral assessments represents 10% of your French module.
Oral presentation: 5% - Online discussion forum (participation): 2.5% - Class
preparation and attendance: 2.5%

Your final grade for the oral practice classes will be based on:
- your attendance
- your oral presentation*
- your contribution to the discussion in class and online

* Your presentation will be marked on both content and language.

Sulis
This module will make extensive use of a dedicated internet site (in SULIS),
called the FR4922/4242 Sulis website, to support your learning. Students are
responsible for keeping current with the content of the FR4922/4242 Sulis site
and should log on at least once a week. The FR4922/4242 Sulis website can
be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection, whether on or off-
campus.
In order to log on to the FR4922/4242 Sulis Website:
• You should have registered online for FR4922/4242 at least 24 hours prior to
attempting to log on.
Go to https://sulis.ul.ie
• Enter your UL network username (i.e. your ID number) and password (not
your PIN) and click ‘Log In’. If you are asked whether you would like the
computer to remember your password, always click no.
• If you do not yet have a UL network password ask for assistance from the
ITD staff in the Library, who can be found at the desk in the computer area on
the ground floor.
• If you still experience difficulties in logging on to Sulis e-mail me at
florence.lebaron-earle@ul.ie providing your UL ID number and describing the
difficulty you encountered.
• Having logged on to Sulis, click on the ‘My Sites’ tab at the right hand side of
the top toolbar to see a list of the published modules for which you are
registered.

The Discussion Forum

The forums tool is a great resource for the whole class. Using the Discussion
Forum tool you can post a message which can be viewed by other members
of the site. This allows us to discuss topics as a group, to pool our questions
and to share answers, ideas and recommendations with each other. In
particular, I would ask that you use the Discussion Forum tool before the
tutorial in order to get ideas and arguments before the class discussion or
after the tutorial in order to continue the class discussion if time was running
out.

Instructions on how post messages are available in the document entitled

“Posting messages in the Discussion Forum” which is available in the
Resources folder.

The online Discussion Forum is worth 2.5% of the final mark.

Contacting your tutor
I am always delighted to meet with my students. I strongly encourage you to
come and see me if you have any questions or need any guidance before and
after class or at my desk.

Drop-in office hours

I hold specific drop-in sessions for students during weeks 1-13 on
Wednesdays from 9h-11h. During these hours you are welcome to call in
without an appointment. Even if you don’t have any questions, feel free to call
in just to introduce yourself. My office is located in the Foundation Building
(where the concert hall is located). My office number is F115+. It is on the first
floor close to the lifts. If you cannot meet with me during my drop in office
hours, please contact me for an appointment.

E-mail
My e-mail address is florence.lebaron-earle@ul.ie Please use your UL e-mail
account only to e-mail me as e-mails from other accounts may be blocked by
spam filters. Even if you haven’t e-mailed me, your lecturers or student
academic administration may communicate essential information to you
and your class through your UL e-mail account so you should check this
account regularly.
If you require assistance in setting up or accessing your UL e-mail account,
please visit the ITD (Information Technology Division) desk located in the
computer area on the ground floor of the library.

Finding help
If at, any point in the semester, you feel as through you are struggling with the
module or with your course work, please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.
Come and see me during my office hours and I will assist your directly or point
you towards other suitable sources of support.

Tutorials
Tutorials begin on Week 1 and are weekly. Except in circumstances such as
illness, it is expected that you will attend all tutorials for FR4922/4242.

5
The role of tutorials

Tutorials are small group settings in which you are offered the opportunity to
practice your oral French. Tutorials also provide an opportunity for you to
receive guidance regarding your assessments.

In tutorials, I will predominantly take the role of facilitator (not lecturer). I will
encourage and direct discussion, but you, the student, should generate
debate and contribute both questions and responses. Tutorials can, therefore,
only function efficiently if you come prepared. You are expected to participate
in all your tutorials, but note that in order to attend you must have completed
any prescribed preparations in advance.

Methods of assessment
Detailed guidance regarding your assessments will be provided in tutorials
and on your FR4922/4242 Sulis site. You are also welcome to use my drop in
office hours to ask for individual assistance.

Tutorials assignments
All assignments take place during the term. In the Spring semester, you will
also have an oral presentation outside class time at the end of the term.
Details will be provided in class.

Assignment 1

In class oral presentation

The oral presentation is a group work. If the group is composed of two
students, it must last 10 minutes. If the group is composed of three students, it
must last 15 minutes. The presentation is carried out in French and must
include an introduction, at least 3 arguments and a conclusion.

The oral presentation is worth 5% of your final mark and is divided as follow:
Group mark: 1.5(ideas), 0.5% (structure).
Individual mark: 1% language fluency, 1% pronunciation, 1.5%
communication, and use of voice.

Assignment 2

Online discussion forum

Successful participation to the online Discussion Forum is worth 2.5% of your
final mark. Students are expected to post messages in French at least once a

6
week. Grammatical errors and misuses will not be penalised as the aim is to
express ideas freely.

Assignment 3

Preparation and attendance are also taken into consideration. Successful

preparation and attendance is worth 2.5% of your final mark.

Lateness
Please note that all deadlines are final and late presentations will not be
possible without prior agreement of an extension with the lecturer.

Extensions
On receipt of a note from a GP, counsellor or other medical or counselling
professional, extensions may be granted due to illness or bereavement.
Submit requests for extensions to your lecturer prior to the assignment
deadline.
