Body Organization and Circulatory System Lesson Plan

Objective: (Goals)
• Students will understand the organization of cells through an organism by
making a graphic organizer and comparing theirs to othersʼ in the class
• Students will learn about the circulatory system and blood through
discussion and reading.

Resources: (Materials)
• Text books
• Body Organization Worksheet
• Chalk Board and Chalk

Opening: Today we will be making graphic organizers of how the body is

organized then we will be talking about the circulatory system. We will first make
graphic organizers in our pods and then we will compare them as a whole group.
Instructional Flow:
15 min Body Organization Graphic Organizer Activity (5 minutes to make it in
your pod, then 2 or 3 volunteers to draw theirs on the board, compare and talk
though why each person organized it the way they did and their thinking).
10 min Circulation Brainstorm (Brainstorm everything that comes to mind when
you hear the word “circulation” not just science words. 3 minutes to brainstorm,
go around the room, each group shares 3-5 words, write the words on the board
as part of the brainstorm activity. Compare words and the relationship to the
circulatory system).

5 min Vein Valve Lab

5 min Pulse Relaxation Activity (Lead as a big group, take pulse for 15 secs,
write down your number. Sigh out load, create a very relaxing environment, sigh
for 20 seconds, then take pulse again. Your pulse should go down slightly, 1 or 2.
Talk about hormones released due to stimulation of vocal chords, and relaxing
yourself.)
15 min Circulatory System Reading and Discussion

Closure: Next class we will review and start the final unit project. Come prepared
to work with your groups determined, remember groups of 3-4.
Assessment:
Informal- Participation in the discussion and answering the questions on the
worksheet.
Formal- Answering questions correctly on the review sheet

* This is part of a series of lessons contained within a unit. It is not meant to

stand alone.

Use the words below to make a graphic organizer. Your graphic organizer should
include pictures and descriptions. Put the words in order for how your body is
organized, smallest to largest.

FOS 3 Circulatory System Brainstorm

Brainstorm In your group brainstorm anything that comes to mind when
you hear the word “circulation” List all the ideas below

Valves in Veins Lab:

1. In pairs, have a classmate make a fist and extend his/her arm, with the
hand palm up. Locate a prominent vein on the inside of the forearm (near
the wrist). Using 1 finger press down on the vein at a point neat the wrist
and block blood flow (You may want to gently stroke the vein, it will
“disappear” temporarily).
2. Gently place a second finger along the vein about 5cm from the first finger
(toward the elbow). Hold for 10 seconds. Let go of the second finger but
not the first. The vein should refill partway. Mark the point that it fills to,
that is the location of a valve. It may take multiple tries to work!
3. Repeat this several times to make a map on your wrist of the valves in
your veins.

Question 1: What direction is blood flowing in the veins you chose?

Question 2: What do you think would happen to the veins in your legs if you
stood in one place for a very long time?
Read Read Chp 39-1 pages 882-888 (first paragraph). Read using Talk-
to-the-Text.

Answer the questions below.

1. What is the function of the circulatory system?

2. What direction does blood flow in arteries? In veins?

3. What is the purpose of capillaries?

4. What happens when fluids get pushed out of capillaries? What happens to
the fluid? Explain the system.

5. What are the components of blood plasma? What is each componentsʼ

function?

6. What are the 3 types of cells in blood? Their functions?
