en la capilla de Santa Rosa de Tojo. Muere en dicho valle bajo testamento otorgado en San Francisco
de Yavi el 9 de noviembre de 1759, ante José Joaquín de la Cava. Está enterrada en la Iglesia de Yavi,
edificada a costa del primer Marqués y declarada "Monumento Nacional" por el gobierno argentino.

provincia del Tucumán, (hoy Jujuy), Virreinato del Río de la Plata, 15 de junio de 1777 - Kingston,
Jamaica, el 22 de octubre de 1820). Fue el 4° marqués del Valle de Toxo (o Tojo o Yavi), conde de
Jujuy, vizconde de San Mateo, caballero de la Orden de Carlos III, Caballero de Calatrava, coronel
mayor graduado de los Ejércitos de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata. En algunos documentos
aparece mencionado también con el nombre de Juan José Feliciano Alejo Fernández Campero.
Hijo del IIIer. marqués de Yavi Juan José Gervasio Fernández Campero y Martiarena y de María Josefa
Ignacia Pérez de Uriondo y Martiarena (sobrina y esposa del tercer marqués). Fue en realidad el cuarto
Marqués del Valle del Tojo, nombre legítimo del marquesado desde 1708. Su marquesado se extendía
por el norte de las actuales provincias argentinas de Jujuy y Salta e incluían grandes extensiones del
territorio de Tarija y Potosí en Bolivia. Su marquesado constituyó lo que sería el único caso de nobleza

otorgado en lo que luego sería la República Argentina (aunque Santiago de Liniers era Conde de
Buenos Aires). Fue, junto con el Barón de Holmberg, uno de los dos nobles que lucharon en las filas
independentistas argentinas. Sobre el marquesado que heredó y los tres marqueses que le precedieron
en la historia se cuentan fantásticas historias, que relatan acerca de su inmensa fortuna proporcionada
por la plata extraída de la mina de Cochinoca. Según estas versiones, supuestamente sus antepasados
habrían escondido sus tesoros en una red de túneles a la que se accedía desde el subsuelo de su casa
en Yavi mediante un mapa grabado sobre un muro en la montaña con indescifrables jeroglíficos. Otra
leyenda sostiene que lo ocultaron en algún lugar de Jujuy, llevándolo mediante cuarenta mulas cargadas
de alforjas con plata hacia un destino desconocido. Luego de intentar mediar entre las dos partes para
evitar la guerra y de recibir a jefes realistas en sus propiedades, en 1813 se incorporó al combate a favor
de la emancipación americana, acompañando como comandante de la Puna a su pariente el legendario
caudillo Martín Miguel de Güemes, en una lucha que Leopoldo Lugones daría en llamar luego la Guerra
Gaucha. Ese año ocupaba el cargo de gobernador de Salta y jefe de la Caballería. Sin dar combate,
determinó el triunfo del general Manuel Belgrano en la Batalla de Salta, acaecida el 20 de febrero de
1813. Belgrano lo designó su edecán y Comandante de la Puna, y el 27 de junio de 1814 el director
supremo Gervasio Antonio de Posadas le extendió los despachos de coronel del Ejército del Norte. Lo
acompañaron en la vanguardia de la frontera como sus subcomandantes de la Sección Volante el
capitán Juan José Quesada, el Comandante de Gauchos Bonifacio Ruiz de los Llanos y los capitanes
indígenas Diego Cala, Juan Antonio Rojas, Agustín Rivera y dos militares españoles pasados a sus filas,
los coroneles Manuel Almonte y Fuente y José Antonio de Acevey. El año 1813 la Asamblea General
Constituyente reunida en Buenos Aires decretó el fin del feudalismo en el territorio rioplatense y la
desaparición de los títulos de nobleza, con lo cual Fernández Campero sólo poseyó la calidad de rico
hombre o hacendado. Los demás comandantes que acompañaron a Güemes en la Guerra Gaucha
fueron Francisco Pérez de Uriondo en Tarija, Manuel Arias en San Ramón de la Nueva Orán y Francisco
de Urdinenea en Humahuaca. En Jujuy estaban los comandantes Bartolomé de la Corte, Domingo
Arenas y José de la Quintana.
Combatió como Coronel Mayor del Ejército de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata desde 1813 hasta
1816, siendo apresado en la Batalla de Yavi o Sorpresa de Yavi el 15 de noviembre de ese año. Hasta
esa batalla, estaba al frente de la comandancia general de La Puna con un ejército de más de seiscientos
hombres montados y sostenidos a sus expensas, al que llamaba Ejército Peruano. Obtuvo la victoria en
varios combates, como Puesto del Marqués, luego contra "Los Angélicos" y posteriormente en la batalla
de Colpayo. En ese período bélico en la Puna se produjeron cuarenta combates, catorce de los cuales
sucedieron en el mismo marquesado de Yavi. Fue un apoyo sustancial para las victorias de Güemes, con
quien mantuvo un vínculo inquebrantable, inclusive cuando se produjo el enfrentamiento con el unitario
José Rondeau. Sus tropas actuaron en los múltiples combates que se sucedieron en tierras de la Puna.
Atendiendo a sus méritos, el director supremo Carlos María de Alvear lo ascendió el 24 de febrero de
1815 al grado de coronel mayor graduado del Ejército. El coronel marqués contaba con fábricas de
pólvora y de sables y, según se decía, su tropa era semejante a la de los regimientos de Europa. En ese
momento independentista fue también electo diputado al Congreso de Tucumán por el partido de
Chichas, hoy Bolivia, junto con su amigo el cura José Andrés Pacheco de Melo. No pudo incorporarse en
razón de encontrarse en el frente de lucha. La contienda fue contra el jefe realista mariscal José Álvarez
de La Serna e Hinojosa, quién estaba a cargo de la tercera y más grande invasión realista, proveniente
del Virreinato del Perú con el propósito de recapturar para la corona española el último baluarte
independentista que quedaba en Sudamérica. Al tomar conocimiento de la Declaración de Independencia
realizada en el Congreso de Tucumán, el marqués de Yavi redactó una encendida proclama
independentista que se conoció como la Arenga de Santa Rosa, mediante la cual hizo juramentar
fidelidad a sus soldados hacia la nueva Nación el 31 de agosto de 1816. El 15 de noviembre de 1816,
mientras escuchaba misa en su capilla de Yavi, él y su tropa gaucha fueron atacados por el coronel
realista Mariaquegui, hecho conocido como “La sorpresa de Yavi”; inútil fue la huida emprendida: caería
el marqués como prisionero de las fuerzas realistas. Fue tomado prisionero por los generales realistas
Pedro Antonio Olañeta y Mariaquegui, enviado a Lima,, es sometido a un Consejo de Guerra y sus
bienes fueron confiscados y luego desterrado a España por su condición de noble alzado en armas
contra la corona a favor de la emancipación. Pidieron por él ofreciendo canje de prisioneros José de San
Martín, Belgrano, Güemes y el plenario del Congreso de Tucumán, lo que no fue concedido por los

La crónica de la época señala que el marqués fue atormentado por sus captores en el Alto Perú y
enviado preso a Lima a la cárcel del Algibe, donde estuvo prisionero junto a Quesada y otros
combatientes independentistas. Luego fue derivado a España vía Panamá cuando San Martín avanzó
sobre Lima, para ser sometido a Consejo de Guerra por tratarse de una figura noble alzada en armas
contra la corona a favor de la nueva Nación. Su delicada salud por los tormentos sufridos y el encierro
determinaron que fuera desembarcado enfermo en Jamaica, donde el marqués murió en Kingston el 22
de octubre de 1820 luego de testar como coronel mayor del Ejército de las Provincias Unidas del Río de

la Plata. . Fallece en Kingston, Jamaica rumbo a España donde lo trasladaban preso para instaurarle
juicio. Dio poder para testar el 21 de octubre de 1821.Fue declarado Procer de la Independencia del
Perú mediante la ley del Perú Nº 6864. Fue conocido en aquella región como el marqués de la Guerra
Gaucha. En el Monumento al general Güemes y sus comandantes de la ciudad de Salta está inscripto
un epitafio en su nombre. Además de ser pariente de Güemes, era primo hermano del coronel Francisco
Pérez de Uriondo, del sargento mayor Pedro Nolasco Pérez de Uriondo y del teniente coronel Manuel
Pérez de Uriondo.
