British Council Essay Writing Contest

British Council Launches Summer Scholarship via Essay Writing Contest

British Council Philippines, together with British Airways, is offering an opportunity for one
high school student to join a 3-week Summer School at St. Edmund’s College for free!

The contest is open to Philippine passport holders aged 12-15 years old by January 1, 2011.
Interested participants need to submit a 300 to 500-word essay on the topic “Why do I want
to go to the UK” along with a copy of their passport to the British Council. All entries must be
received by 5.30pm on Friday, 6 May. Entries will be judged according to content, style and
organization.

Five finalists will be selected after the first round and will be invited for an interview by a
judging panel before a winner is announced by 16 May. The British Council will provide return
airfare, refund of visa processing fee and tuition for the summer school.

St Edmund's College, situated in beautiful parkland half way between London and
Cambridge, is England's oldest Catholic school and has a fine reputation for welcoming and
educating international students. The summer school is an integral part of the College and
promotes high standards of personal achievement, conduct and community spirit.

The educational experience provided on the summer school, which is fully residential, is
intended to compliment the child's teaching and learning at home. The course offers new
learning opportunities through exciting projects, theatre, educational visits, option courses
and activities all designed to challenge and extend personal development and language
competence. Educational excursions are an important feature of the course. Each class will
have five full-day excursions and one London theatre visit per three week course.

British Airways is the official flag carrier of the UK. Through its partners, it offers regular
flights from Manila or Cebu to any point in the UK.
