What is It
What is Philosophy?
A pursuit of wisdom.
A search for a general understanding of values and reality.
Came from the Greek terms PHILOS which means Love and SOPHIA which
means Wisdom.
The love for wisdom.
Let us define…
Perspective – aiding vision. The appearance of the eye of objects in respect to their
relative distance and positions.
Holistic – relating to or concerned with complete rather than with individual parts.
Abstractive thinking – the bird’s eye view of the whole. This means that it raises
from level of everyday life to a higher level.
6
Insights – seeing with the mind or using the mind to see the world.
Holistic perspective
It is viewing things and situations in a larger broader perspective. This
means that to be able to think philosophically, a person must learn to look beyond
what is immediately before us. Moreover, a person must learn to and see how a
thing is related to everything else – the mark of a holistic perspective.
Our aim is to understand how a philosophical mind moves. The
Philosophical insights means a person is able to see with the mind.

What is It
Truth
According to B. Corpuz, ET. Al (2016, p. 23), truth is related to science
because it is the field that delivers knowledge about the world.
Truth understood this way is what philosophers call objective truth. They
point to descriptions of the ‘states of affairs’ which remain true regardless of who is
viewing them.
Truth can be understood as what has passed the procedures of justification.
Justification means the process of proving the truth or validity of the statement.
The process is made up of ways critically testing a claim against certain criteria.
Opinion
According to B. Corpuz, ET. Al (2016, p. 23), an opinion is a statement of
judgment of a person about something in the world.
Opinions are statements of judgment that are in need of further justification
furthermore opinion must be able to argue for it in the most reasonable way.
This is not yet an argument. If the person wants to convince another person
that his opinion is true, then he must provide arguments which consist of a claim
and premises. Claim is the conclusion of an argument. Premises are the reasons
used to support a conclusion.
7
Example.
There is no hope in the Philippine government because many officials are
corrupt and Filipino voters continue to elect them.
(This is now an opinion supported by an argument.)
2. SOCIAL DOMAIN
The “truth” is analogous with (not the exact equivalent) of a general or
consensus on what is right as opposed to what is wrong. This domain of truth
is mostly products of an “agreement” in society that has been established over
time.
This truth is tested or justified against the acceptability to a particular
group in a particular time in history.
The justification of social norms takes longer than scientific truths. This is
especially true if it involved in the process of justifying them are the people
coming from varying backgrounds and history. Because of their differences in
their perspectives, it is not easy to get a consensus or agreement. This is the
reason why social norms take time before they are turned into hard laws.
Furthermore, even if they do become laws, there is always the impending
possibility of them being revoked or changed.
8
3. PERSONAL DOMAIN
The “truth” is analogous with sincerity. Our statements are consistent with
our inner thoughts and intentions. No one can have access to our minds and
thoughts except us.
A person who proves to be consistent with what he declares himself is
regarded as authentic and can therefore be trusted and trustworthy.
The truth is tested or justified against the consistency and authenticity of
the person who claims it.
The justification of personal truths is probably the longest to complete
among the three. This is because personal truths take a whole lifetime of
consistency in the actions and decisions of a person who makes a claim about
himself.

What are the things you consider your own personal limitations and
weaknesses and why do you consider them as a limitation or weakness?
Write your answer to complete the table.
Your own limitations and weakness Why do you consider them as your
own limitation and weakness?
What is It
Embodied Existence
According to B. Corpuz, ET. Al (2016, p.44 - 45) the human existence is an
embodied existence.
Many things that are related to our existence as persons are related to our
bodies – age, sex, race, relationships, and others. Our age count began as soon as
our embodied existence. The bodies that we are born with will also determine our
sex. Race or our line of descent among the first group of human beings in our
evolution, is determine by our bodies. Finally, our biological relationships – mother,
father and siblings – are connected to our embodied existence.
20
A large part of who we are and how we define ourselves is determined and
delineated by our bodies.
Human Limitations
According to B. Corpuz, ET. Al (2016, p. 45) as limitations, the body related
aspects about us are not products of our free choice. They have in the sense been
given to us as permanent basis. It then comes as no surprise that the body is the
source of frustration to many. Some people are not happy with their age, sex, or
familial relationships. Some people wish that they were born at a different time, of
a different sex, or of a different family. Frustration of this kind put the body in a
negative light as it is some form of imprisonment.
1. Facticity
Facticity refers to the things in our lives that are already given. This is our
first limitation. We did not choose our parents.
There are a lot of things which are already in and with us when we are born;
our gender, our color, our race, our social status, our genes, and others.
People born with disabilities would have more limitations than us.
It also refers to all the details that surround us in the present as being-in-
the-world in the here and the now; and this will include our environment,
our language, our past decisions, our past and present relationships and
even our future death.
Looking at every aspect of who we are right now, we will realize that our
being in this world imposes practically countless of limitations on us. And
this is the reality of embodied being that we shall always have limitations by
the facticity of our existence.
3. Body as intermediary
We have established that we are our bodies, but also more than our bodies.
Our body then serves as an intermediary between us and the physical world.
It is because of my body that I experience the world from a particular bodily
standpoint- from a lying standpoint along the shore of a beach, or from a
sitting standpoint beside the window of a plane, etc. It is because of my body
that I experience the world as my world. My body limits my experience of the
world to my world.
My body as intermediary limits me in communicating with other people.
Our bodily gestures are not enough to tell other people what we have in
mind or what we feel. We have to make use of words or bodily expressions,
but we know words are limiting. When we say I love you, do these words
21
really express what we feel for other persons? Can words really capture the
things that we want to express?
Transcendence
According to B. Corpuz, ET. Al (2016, p. 45) transcendence originated from
the words Trans, meaning “go beyond”, and scandare, meaning “climb”.
Going beyond the limits of the ordinary experience.
For the better o greater that what is usual.
Act of rising above to a superior state.
Transcending Limitations
1. Facticity
We cannot simply truly change our facticity, but what we can do is change
our attitude towards them.
Do not let our own facticity define who we are, (maliit ako, pangit ako,
maiitim ako, mahirap lang kami, etc.) What is important is to see that we are free
to define who we are and who are to be.
This is what you called our historicity. It means we are history making
creatures, and we are not limited to what nature has initially given us. Our facticity
challenges us to be creative with our life options.
‘No choice’ is not one of the options.
2. Spatial-Temporal
Our being limited due to our being temporal is something which bothers a
lot of people. We are more concerned about the future and or the past that is why
we never appreciate the present.
Perhaps what we need is a moment to stop and reflect on our attitude
toward temporality.
If we are reminded from time to time how wonderful the present is, then
perhaps being a temporal creature does not really impose limitations, but simply
sets a challenge. It is a challenge on how to make our lives more interesting
and more meaningful; and a challenge to make the most out of our time in
this life.
Just like being temporal, we can always look at our spatial character as an
invitation to make the most of our lives. We are invited to and challenged to make
the most out of that occasion. Sometimes we don’t realize how beautiful our lives
are when everything that we want, and need is already with us. It is true that we
often lately appreciate the value of things when it is no longer present. So we are
invited to appreciate what is present in our space. If we are with our love
ones then make the most out of that presence.
Thus, being reminded of our spatial character invites us to value the people
and things around us.
3. Body as Intermediary
Having a body which links us to the world appears to be a source of
limitation because we can never directly and fully experience the world. As an
embodied subject we always experience the world as my world; it is limiting on the
one hand, but also a privileged experience. What we experienced is only for us to
be experienced.
22
Having a body may prevent us from disclosing what we really want to
express. This then challenges us to be more creative in our expressions. Be
creative in saying I love you because most of the times these words are not enough.
Having a body hides our thoughts and feelings of a person. This then
serves as a challenge for us to work on a good relationship with people whom
we want to open for us. Learn how to be responsible, to be patient, sensitive,
understanding, and a lot of other values.

What is It
The Environment
According to Miriam Webster dictionary, the environment is the complex of
physical, chemical, and biotic factors such as climate, soil and living things that
act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its
form and survival.
It is also known as the natural resources and is characterized as God –
given.
35
2. Theo – centric approach
The Theo (God) - centric approach refers to an understanding coming from a
religious interpretation. The story relates that after creating the world, and all
that is in it, including man and woman, God said “God and multiply; fill the
earth and subdue it.” It is important to stress the meaning of stewardship here.
To steward over something is to manage or put something under your care. In
Filipino, to be a steward is to be katulong or katiwala.
In the recent encyclical Laudato Si of Pope Francis he said that our being
created in God’s image and given dominion over the earth justifies absolute over
another creature. We have been given the power to make use of what has been
given us, but with this power come the responsibility and duty to take care of
the gift. As such, we are not just consumers of earth’s resources. We are its co-
creators.
The Theo - centric approach tells us that although we may be able to trace
the immediate causes of environmental degradation but if we forgot to pin down
the main factor that is responsible for it, ourselves, as human beings – then we
will never be able to address this escalating problem of the destruction of the
earth. We are the problem and we, ourselves are the solution.
3. Anthropocentric Approach
This approach, anthropos (man) + centric, is like the Theo - centric
approach that puts the human person in dominion over the earth but de-
emphasizes the role of God. We remember how we had to use a “controlled set
up” and compared it with an “experimental set-up”.
The development of experimental science has made the human being aware
that he can detach himself from the ongoing cycle of nature and thereby control
it. No longer is the human being simply vulnerable to the dictates of nature.
Natural calamities such as hurricanes, earthquakes and floods can be
controlled to some extent.
The downside of the rise of modern sciences is the swelling of the human
being’s pride over his powers to alter and manipulate nature.
36
being thrifty, sparing, or economical in the consumption of resources and avoiding
waste, lavishness, or extravagance.
The word Frugality is oftentimes used in money; a thriftiness or a quality of
being economical with money. If this term is applied in the environment, this
simply means that you have to CONSERVE as well as PROTECT the environment
(https://brainly.ph/question/977458#:~:text=If%20this%20term%20is

According to B. Corpuz, ET. Al (2016, p. 72) we, the human beings
culprit of all forms of environmental degradation and we are the only ones
who can also arrest it. We need to change our materialistic and consumerists
lifestyle that is rooted on greed and selfishness. There is such a thing of
sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising of future generations to meet their own needs. The fight for
the environment should begin on the personal level; individually we should do
our part in preserving and protecting the environment.
