QUESTION 1

a) A rigid plate is fixed to the top of the composite member consisting of a copper core and
an outer bronze cylindrical shell as shown in Figure Q1a. The cylinder is fixed at the
bottom support. An axial tensile force, P = 200 kN is applied to the cylinder whose cross-
section is as shown in Figure Q1b. Take the modulus of elasticity of copper, Ec= 120
GPa and bronze, Eb = 105 GPa.

b) The normal and shearing stresses on horizontal and vertical planes at a point in a
structural member subjected to plane stress are shown on the element in Figure Q1c.
Use the stress transformation equations or the Mohr's stress circle to:

QUESTION 2

a) The 2.1 m cantilever beam ABCD shown in Figure Q2a carries two concentrated loads
of 3 kN at points C and D, a uniformly distributed load of 8 kN/m along span CD and a
bracket component at point B. The cross-section of the beam is shown in Figure Q2b.

## i) Determine all the reactions at fixed end A.

ii) Identify the shear force and bending moment at points A, B, C and D.
(9 marks)

iii) Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the whole beam.
(2 marks)

iv) Calculate the maximum shear force and bending moment and their locations.

(2 marks)

v) Calculate the position of the centre of gravity (y) and the moment of inertia, lxx of the
cross-section in Figure Q2b. Hence, determine the maximum compressive bending
stress for the beam.

b) Propose the new maximum shear force, Vmax for the beam AD, if the maximum shear
stress, Tmax is 8.8 MN/m 2 .

QUESTION 3

A simply supported beam ABCD with 2.5 m span is as shown in Figure Q3. It carries a
uniformly distributed load of 12 kN/m along span AD. An anticlockwise moment of 3 kNm
acts at support A and two concentrated loads of 7kN and 8kN act at points B and C
respectively. Take E = 200 x 109N/m2and use the Macaulay's method.

a) Establish the slope and deflection equations in terms of variable x and the constants of
integration.

## b) Use suitable boundary conditions to find the above constants of integration.

c) Determine the slope of the elastic curve at point B if the moment of inertia of the section,
/ = 12.1 x10- 6 m 4 .

d) Propose the new moment of inertia, / of the beam if the deflection at point C is 22.8 mm.

QUESTION 4

a) Determine the diameter of a solid steel shaft 5 m long which is subjected to a maximum
shearing stress of 50 N/mm2. Take the modulus of rigidity, G as 28 kN/mm2 and the
angle of twist, 8 as 10°.

b) A composite cylindrical steel shaft ABC consists of a hollow segment and a solid
segment and is subjected to two torques at B and C, as shown in Figure Q4a. The
hollow segment, AB has external diameter of 200 mm and internal diameter of 100 mm.
And, the solid segment, BC has diameter of 150 mm. Take the modulus of rigidity, G as
80 GN/m 2 .

i) Determine the torque, T in shaft AB and shaft BC by using the torque diagram.

ii) Identify the maximum shearing stress, xmax along AB.
(4 marks)

iii) Calculate the total angle of twist at end C with respect to the fixed end.
(5 marks)

iv) Modify the new maximum shearing stress at shaft BC, if the diameter of solid
segment BC is equal to the outer diameter of segment AB.
(4 marks)
