FORMULA SAE

2010-2011 Sponsorship Proposal

What is FSAE?
“Develop a formula-style open wheel, open cockpit race car.”
Formula SAE is a collegiate engineering design competition in which
students from across the world compete to design an open wheel, open cockpit
formula race car. Hosted by SAE International, more than 250 teams from 8
countries compete against each other to develop the fastest, lightest, most
affordable and most reliable racing vehicle. In the United States, competitions
take place yearly at California and Michigan International speedways. Formula
SAE encourages students to excel in research, management, design,
development, testing, and marketing.

Our Team

2010-2011 Mission Statement

We will design, build, and test a car that…
Finishes in the top fifteen overall.
Weighs less than 480 lbs.
Has been proven competitive by having at
least two months of testing time.
Shows design intent with documentation.

Our goal is to ensure that all team

members gain knowledge in every
system as well properly archiving
that knowledge for use by future
teams.

There is an encyclopedia of fundamental engi-
neering principles that must be mastered to be
competitive. Most of this work is done in the
university’s Mechanical Engineering depart-
ment, where a machine shop with
medium scale lathes and mills are provided. The
machining process and manufacturability are
an integral part of the learning process.

Testing:
As in all forms of racing, rigorous testing of the ve-
hicle is necessary to ensure an advantage come
time to compete. After fabrication, students learn
how to refine a newly designed product so that it
performs in the real world. Skills learned in the
phase of development will serve team members for
the rest of their lives, making them highly market-
able problem solvers that companies need.

In the past our cars have;

-Placed in top 25% at Michigan Nationals
-Been completely student developed
-Been designed, fabricated and tested in 1 year
-Been completely sponsor-funded

Why Sponsor?
Sponsorship of the University of Minnesota’s FSAE team is an investment in the training of
the enthusiastic technical professionals of the future. Think of it as a job advertisement and a
human resource investment in one bundle. Students in this program are getting real experi-
ence in marketable, effective skills that every industry needs.

These very real skills include:

Engineering
-Technical writing (both paper and design programs)
-Fabrication with mills, welding, electronics, ergonomics
-Making immediate use of engineering principles at the University

Product Development
-Getting a finished product is an endless process. The job is not over once something is built,
it must be proven. Members learn about real work ethic and problem solving. One of our
goals is to create something marketable that customers will buy. Play a part in preparing stu-
dents for life outside of the university.

Character
-Individuals will inevitably learn to collaborate with others to achieve the organizations objec-
tives. Invest in people willing to be a part of something bigger than themselves, so they may
learn respect, patience, humility, and a realistic outlook on life in the workforce. Invest in the
team to give the world (and your company) people who know how to get the job done while
keeping the big picture in mind.

Management Skills
-The team learns business aptitudes including accounting/fiscal management, marketing and
networking. Additionally team members gain an invaluable sense of time management as
they work to complete design, fabricate and test a car in just nine months.
