Operations
● Upgrade the firmware
Method A: Copy the firmware to the root directory of an SD card, hold down the "+"
button(Q5) or “Function” button(Q7) while the device is shutdown, and then connect
the charger. When the orange LED light appears, the device is entering into the
firmware upgrade mode. Be patient. The screen will show the upgrade process. When
it is finished, the device will be automatically restarted. (Warning: Do not cut off the
power or unplug the charger during the upgrade process.)
Method B: If you can not upgrade the firmware using the above method, try the
following method. First of all, ensure that the SD card uses the FAT32 format, use the
SD card upgrade tool（http://www.smartdevices.com.cn/files/SDUpdateToolV1.1.rar）
to modify the SD card (this should not damage any files stored on the card, but for
insurance, please backup the SD card). Make sure the SD card is inserted into the
device. Hold down the "Function" button(Q5) or “Enter” button(Q7) in the shutdown
mode and then put the “power” key to turn on the device. When the orange LED light
appears, the device is entering into the firmware upgrade mode. Be patient. The
screen will show the upgrade process. When it is finished, the device will be
automatically restarted. (Warning: Do not cut off the power or unplug the charger
during the upgrade process.)
※ Please download the firmware and the SD card start and upgrade tool from the
website http://www.smartdevices.com.cn/.
※ After the upgrade is complete you need to calibrate the touch-screen, see below.
● Power on
Method A: Press the power button, the green LED light, the system will boot the
operating system.
Method B: Insert the charger, the system will boot the operating system.
● Calibrate the touch-screen
Method A: Hold down the “Function” button and the power button at the same time,
you can enter the touch-screen calibration interface, and then click on the cross-hairs
with the stylus to calibrate the screen.
Method B: Open the menu “Start” --- "Settings'---"System Settings", and select
"Touchscreen calibration" to calibrate.

● Charge the device
Plug one end of the charger into a 110-220V AC socket, and then plug the other end
into the DC out on the side of the machine. In the standby mode, it will take about 3-4
hours. Charging will take longer when in use. The LED light is red when charging,
and it will turn green when the battery is full.
● Logout to shutdown or suspend
Click the Start menu---"Logout", you can choose to shutdown or suspend in the
pop-up interface.
● Use the soft keyboard
Click the keyboard icon in the upper right corner and the soft keyboard will pop up.
Right-click the keyboard icon, the soft keyboard control panel will pop-up, and you
can choose whether or not to automatically pop-up soft keyboard when you click on a
text input box.

● Adjust the volume
Click the speaker icon in the upper right corner to adjust the volume in the pop-up
panel. Click the slide or "+" "-" button to adjust the volume. Then, click the speaker
icon again to quit.
● Control the backlight and manage power
Click the sun icon in the upper right corner and the brightness adjustment interface
will pop-up.

Click the "Setting" button to adjust the backlight and the power mode. When you do
not want to shutdown the machine when not in use, you can use the sleep mode. Sleep
mode can greatly reduce system power consumption. You can wake it up by just
pushing the power button. This operation will not affect the application that has been
opened. You can turn off the automatic sleep function by sliding “sleep time" to the
right.
● Set the date and time
Click the time in the upper right corner and the interface will pop up as follows:
Click on the "Time setting” to adjust the time. Click on "sync with the server" (if you are

connected to the internet) and it will automatically synchronize with the network time server. You
can also modify the date and time manually, and then click the OK button.
● Connect the PC to read/write to the SD card
With the device powered on, connect to the computer with the provided USB cable. If it does not
connect automatically, please check the "System Settings" to see whether it displays the "Open the
removable disk mode (turn off Bluetooth and USB Host)" status. If this is the status, it can not
connect to the computer via USB. You must change the “System Settings” option to enter the
removable disk mode.
● Pop-up the right click menu
Touch the screen for about 1 second and then the right-click menu will pop-up.
● Move the Window
To move a window, hold down the “Function” button and then touch and drag the top of the
window. You may need to move the window in order to see what is hidden below. If the window
has been maximized, it will no longer move.

Functions
● Internet
Click “Start”---“Internet”. This menu includes the following applications: BT download, GPRS
(EDGE) dial-up, Instant message, Internet browser, E-mail, Bluetooth dial-up.
1. BT download
Click the "Add" button, select a seed file and the save file path, and then start the BT download
2. GPRS（EDGE）dial-up
You must enable the USB Host in the "System Settings" firsr, and then use the USB OTG to
connect the USB EDGE card with the SmartQ5. Click “Start”--- "Internet"---"GPRS (EDGE)
dial-up", and then click "connect" in the pop-up interface. You do not have to modify any user
name, password, or telephone number. Use the default settings.
3. Instant message
Click “Start”--- "Internet"---" Instant message”, click "Add" in the pop-up dialog box. In the "Add
account" page drop-down list, select the option of QQ, MSN, Fetion, Google Talk, etc. Fill in your
user name, password, and then hold down the “Function” button to drag the windows up and click
the "Add" button to add the account.
After that, click “Account”---“login account” to start it.

4. Internet browser
Click “Start”---“Internet browser” to open Midori.
5. E-mail
Click “Start”---“Claw mail" to open the E-mail program. It will activate the setup wizard when run
for the first time. Follow the wizard, fill in your user name, password, and server address. The
following chart shows the normal state of send and receive.

5. Bluetooth dial-up
Click “Start”---“Bluetooth dial-up" to connect the Internet using a Bluetooth phone. For how to
connect to the phone please refer to the section on "Bluetooth connectivity.”
● Office
Click “Start”---“Office”. It includes the following applications: personal information

management, word processing, e-book reader, and spreadsheet program.
1. Personal Information Management
Click “Start”---“Office”--- "OSMO” to open the personal information management
software. You can see the calendar, edit tasks, contacts, notes, and so on inside.

2. Word processing
Click “Start”---“Office”--- "Abiword” to open the word processing software. You can
use it to view and edit Microsoft Word documents.
3. E-book reader
Click “Start”---“Office”--- "FBReader” to open the E-book reader. You can use it to
read many different e-book formats such as ePub and non-DRM Mobipocket.
4. Spreadsheets
Click “Start”---“Office”--- "Gnumeric” to open the spreadsheet program. You can use
it to view and edit Microsoft Excel documents.

●Graphics
The Graphics menu include the following applications: Evince document viewer,
Image Viewer, drawing, and so on.
1. PDF document browser
Click “Start”---“Graphics”--- "Evince document viewer” to open the PDF document
browser. You can use it to read PDF documents.
2. Image Viewer
Click “Start”---“Graphics”--- "Image Viewer” to open the program. You can use it to
view the picture files. It can also zoom in/out, view full screen, rotate the image.
3. Drawing
Click “Start”---“Graphics”--- " rgbPaint” to open the program. You can use it to view
a photo or edit an image.
● System Tools
The System Tools menu includes the following applications: the File Manager and the
software package installation program.
1. File Manager
Click “Start”---“System Tools”---“PCman” to open the file manager. You can view
system files and files on the SD card as well as copy, paste, and perform other
operations.

2. Software package installation

The program will be run when you click on the Deb package. You can install many
different software packages from the repositories at www.handhelds.org and other sites.
●Sound & Video
The Sound & Video menu include the following applications: Sonata, SMPlayer, and
Audacious.
1. Sonata
Click “Start”---“Sound & Video”---“Sonata” to open the music player. You can add
songs to the database and then play them.

2. SMPlayer
Click “Start”---“Sound & Video”---“SMPlayer” to open the video player. You can
select the full screen mode to watch a movie。
3. Audacious
Click “Start”---“Sound & Video”---“Audacious” to open the music player. You can
add songs to the database and then play them.

The Games menu includes the following applications: Bejeweled and Lianliankan.

●Accessories
The Accessories menu includes the following applications: Compressed file

management, Search for Files or Folders, dictionary, calculator, notepad, etc.
1. Compressed file management
Click “Start”---“Accessories”---“Xarchiver” to open the compressed file management.
You can use it to create or open a compressed file.
2. Search for Files or Folders
Click “Start”---“Accessories”---“Search for Files or Folders” to open the Find Files
dialog box to locate files.
3. Dictionary
Click “Start”---“Accessories”---“StarDict” to open the StarDict.
When you selected words, StarDict will translate them automatically.

4. Calculator
Click “Start”---“Accessories”---“Galculator” to open the calculator.
5. Notepad
Click “Start”---“Accessories”---“Leafpad” to open the notepad. You can open and
edit text documents with it.

● Preferences
The Preferences menu includes the following applications: Appearance settings,

Wireless network, Window themes, System settings, and Bluetooth Manager.
1. Appearance settings
Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“Appearance” to open the appearance settings.
You can modify the appearance of the system such as themes and icons.
2. Wireless Network
Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“Wicd Network Manager” to open the wireless
network manager. Click “Refresh” to search for WiFi hotspots. When a hotspot is
found, click on the “Connect” button to connect it.
If you can not find any WiFi hotspots, make sure that the wireless router has been
configured correctly and that the SmartQ5 is within the coverage area.

If the hotspot has been encrypted, click on the arrow in front of hotspot name and
click the “Advanced Settings” button. Select “Use Encryption”, and set the encryption
type of the corresponding hotspot (usually WPA or WEP), and then enter the
password to connect.
If you want to use a static IP address, or the hotspot does not support the DHCP
function of the dynamic address assignment, click the "Advanced Settings" and select
"Use static IPs" option, fill in IP address, Net mask, Gateway, and DNS.

Note: Fill in the static IP address must be set in the wireless router could be allocated.
3. Window theme
Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“Openbox Configuration Manager” to open the
program. You can modify the theme of the window.
4. System Settings
Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“SysSettings” to open the System Settings interface.
You can also click the power button to enter the system settings interface in the boot
state.

5. Bluetooth Connection Manager

Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“Bluetooth Manager” to set a Bluetooth device. You
can transfer files or tether the SmartQ to your cell phone.
Here is an example how to use the Bluetooth function to connect to the Internet with a
mobile phone:
First of all, ensure the mobile phone network services and the Bluetooth have been
turned on. Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“SysSettings” to open the system manager
interface and click on "Enable Bluetooth and USB Host" option.
Click “Start”---“Preferences”---“Bluetooth Manager” to start the Bluetooth device and

click "Search" button to searching for Bluetooth devices nearby. When the equipment

is found, click the "Add" button and "Bond" button, and then select the pairing
method. Next, input the pair passkey in the mobile phone. Then, click on "Setup" in
the pop-up dialog box and select "Dial-Up Networking".

The phone will appear in the pop-up confirmation interface and select Accept.
The Bluetooth connection should be successful. Click “Start”---“Internet”---

"GNOME PPP" and click "Connect" button in the pop-up interface. After that you are
successfully to connect the network with the mobile phone.

Note:
1. After the Bluetooth pairing is successful, be sure not to turn off the Bluetooth
Manager. You can minimize it. If it is turned off, then you will no longer be able to
successfully dial-up the network.
2. In the "Bluetooth dial-up" interface, please do not change any settings. Direct click
the "connection" button. Otherwise, it won’t lead to a successful dial-up.
● Run
Click “Start”---“Run” to open the command box, type the command of what you want
to run, then click "OK" to confirm. For example, enter “gpe-screenshot” to take a
picture of the screen.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
●Black screen and touch the screen does not respond when
charging.
When the equipment is not used for a long time, the power manager automatically
places the system in suspend mode. The touch screen will be locked. You need to
press the power button to unlock the screen. Suspend does not affect the charging
process and it will actually charge faster.
●How to shut down an unresponsive program:
Click the power button, the "system manager settings" interface will pop-up. Click
"Task Manager" button and then select the procedures that you want to shut it down.
Right-click it and then select "Kill" in the pop-up menu.
●How to start the Terminal:
Click on the Start menu "Run", input "evilvte" in the pop-up box with the soft
keyboard. This will start the Terminal.
●How to install a software:
Download the *.deb software installation package from the website. Click the file in
the File Manager. This will start the "GDebi Package Installer" to install the software.
●Turn off the speaker:
In the Screen Brightness Settings menu, you can choose to turn off speakers. It will
not affect the operation of the 3.55mm headphone jack.
●The difference between the Shutdown and the Suspend:
Suspend puts the machine into a low-power sleep mode and it will no longer respond
to touch-screen operation. By pressing the power button the system will quickly
restore itself.

●How to set the browser so it will not download pictures and

run scripts:
In the browser menu, select "Edit”—“Preferences", remove the check mark next to
"Load images automatically" on the "Behavior" page. Now it will not download
pictures when browsing a website and this will reduce the network traffic. Remove
the "Enable scripts" check mark to increase the speed of the browsing, but some of the
page features may not work as a result.
●How to open the scientific calculator:
In the calculator, click the menu "View" --- "Scientific mode" to enable the scientific
functions.
●How to use the browser to download files:
Directly click the file link to download, or right-click and select “Save As” to choose
a custom directory in which to save the file. Click the "Tools"---"Transfers", to see the
progress of file downloads.

●Change the wallpaper:
Right-click on the desktop and select the “Desktop Settings” menu to change the
desktop wallpaper. Note: be sure to put the new wallpaper in the user directory
(/home/user/). If you put it on the SD card, the wallpaper will be displayed only when
the SD card is inserted.
●How to set the interface font size:
Click “Start”--- "Preferences"---"Appearance” to choose the font and its size. That
window has several other interface options you may find useful.
●How to watch the video online:
Open the browser, enter the video page, click the triangle button on the right of the
address bar, then the online video will be play in the pop-up video window.
Single-click to pause the video, double-click to play it in full screen, double-click
again to exit the full-screen mode.
●How to drag and drop the web pages:
Click on a blank part of the page, press, and hold to drag it.

●How to use the wired network card:
Open the USB host device first, and then insert the cable network card in it. Click
“Start”---“Preferences”---“Wicd Network Manager". In that window, click the
“Preferences” button, fill “eth1” in the “Wired Interface”, and select “Always show
wired interface” and then click “OK”.
After refresh it will show the wired network. Click the "Advanced Settings" and select
to auto-obtain an IP address or use a static IP address. Fill in the IP, Netmask,
Gateway, and DNS server. After that, you can connect to a wired network.
※ We recommend using one of the following wired network cards: RTL8150,

DM9601, MCS7830, and SMS 2202. We have found these to have better
compatibility and stability.
