MODAL VERBS (Present Tense)

The meaning of a sentence can be modified by using modal verbs. German has six modal
verbs: können - müssen - dürfen - wollen - sollen - mögen

Examples

1. Martin kann Fußball spielen. (Martin can...)

2. Du mußt nach Hause kommen. (You have to...)
3. Sie darf in die Disko gehen. (She is allowed to...)
4. Er will nach Deutschland fliegen. (He wants to...)
5. Ihr sollt die Hausaufgabe machen. (You should...)
6. Ich mag Bier. (I like...)

Modal verbs modify the main verb (the action) as follows:

Their conjugation features irregular forms in singular, that is, there is no umlaut from the
infinitive and there are not endings for first and third person.

Usually, modal verbs require a so-called dependent infinitive which is the verb they are
modifying. This "main verb" is at the end of the phrase (in a main clause) in its infinitive
form:

 Er muß zum Essen gehen.

When the dependent infinitive is clear (implied from context or by general assumption) it
does not have to be spelled out:

 Elsa kann Deutsch. (sprechen, verstehen or a similar verb is expected and thus
implied).

SOME DETAILS

1.
o sollen vs. müssen: "müssen" is 'stronger'
o mögen vs. wollen: "wollen" is 'stronger'
2.
o to have to = müssen: I have to go now. = Ich muß jetzt gehen.
o to have = haben: I have a car. = Ich habe ein Auto.

THEREFORE: I have to have this CD! = Ich muß diese CD haben!

3. Negation of "must"
= I must go now. (I have to go now) = Ich muß jetzt gehen.
= Okay, you may go. (You are allowed to go) = Du darfst gehen.

ABER: You must not do that! = Du darfst (sollst) das nicht machen!
[You are not supposed/not allowed to do that.]
==> must not = nicht dürfen/sollen

4. brauchen (to need)

o I need a book. = Ich brauche ein Buch.

o I need to go now. = Ich muß jetzt gehen.
o I need not do it. = Ich brauche es nicht zu machen. Oder: Ich muß es nicht
machen.

a) and b) works similar to "to have" [haben] and "to have to" [müssen]).
c) Because "I need not do it" can be expressed as "I do not have to do it", the
translation would be the same:
==> not to have to = nicht müssen, nicht brauchen (usually)

This is for the negation only. There is a small difference in meaning:

o I do not have to come [but I will/might]. = Ich brauche nicht (zu) kommen.
o I do not have to come [and I won't]. = Ich muß nicht kommen.
