Project Planning and Management (PPM) Course

Background:
PPM is one of the only project management courses in Nepal to focus on the specific needs of
planning and managing development projects. It will equip participants with a sound understanding
of the issues facing I/NGOs and an opportunity to reflect on the impact and implications of the
management and organizational challenges they face.

This unique course focuses on the specific needs of development project officers/managers
working in NGOs, INGOs and other development cooperation projects. It is an opportunity to
develop and improve the planning, management competencies, analytical capabilities and effective
implementation of the projects of a new generation of NGO managers. It will also help the
participants to learn the new strategic and dilemmas faced by NGO’s and identify appropriate
strategies to address them.

Who is the course for?


This unique course is intended for individuals to establish careers in I/NGOs as well as
practitioners with experience who are looking to develop their knowledge and skill in Project
Planning and Management of I/NGOs. Applicants should be Graduate-level having English
language and computer skills. Any interested individuals or groups are welcome to apply for
participation.

Course structure and content


The PPM course runs from Sunday to Friday in evening 17:00hrs – 19:15 hrs. Seminars on
contemporary social development issues will also be organized on Sundays during the period.

Duration: Four weeks course.

Number of participants: 20-22

Language of instruction: English and Nepali

Selection: Interview and assessment

Course fee: NPR. 12,000/- which covers participation in the course and reading materials.

Scholarship/Funding: all applicants are requested to seek scholarship or funding from other sources to
partake in this course as organizers are not in position to offer scholarship or funding. Letter of acceptance
could be produced if required to secure funding to participate in this course.

Mode of Payment: Payment has to be made after selection to participate in the course through bank
deposit to ISAS, Kathmandu, Nepal (bank a/c will be provided upon the request)
Recourse Person: National and international experts working in the field of Project Planning and
Management.

Training Venue: ISAS Seminar Hall, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur

I WEEK • Development Theory and prospective from past to present


• Human Development Index (HDI)
• Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)
• Global Development Scenario
• Major Development Actors-UN, WB, ADB and other bilater cooperation
projects
• Community development/Local Development
• Poverty and development (crosscutting issues-gender, chills rights, food
security etc)

II WEEK • Project Cycle Management (PCM) in Result Based Management (RBM)


approach
• Log Frame Approach (LFA)
• Proposal/concept note writing
• Budget Plan, Control and Management
• Research tools and techniques
• Fund raising for development cooperation projects

III WEEK • Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and Documentation


• Leadership and Management skills
• PRA (appreciate enquiry as a motivational tools)
• Work Plan (Project level and individual level)
• Case Studies- Presentation of some successful projects)
• Career in Development cooperation- preparing CV, Cover later, drill for
interview and written test

IV WEEK • Participants will be divided into small groups and assigned for project work.
Guidance and necessary backstopping will be provided by technical
experts for completion and presentation of the project.
