Red Cross blood drive April 29 in Manistee

Every day of every week,
people need blood for emergency
and ongoing medical care. It’s a
need that doesn’t take a break,
despite the season. About 39,000
blood donations are needed daily
by hospital patients undergoing
treatment for serious diseases like
cancer and sickle cell, for surgery,
and for trauma and burn care.
The next Red Cross blood
drive in Manistee will take place
Friday, April 29 from noon until
5 p.m. at the First Congregational
Church, 412 Fourth St.
“Collecting blood from volun-
teer donors isn’t something that
can be put on hold or caught up
on later since the need for blood
is constant,” said Sharon Jaksa,
CEO for the Great Lakes Blood
Services Region of the American
Red Cross. “We’d like everyone
who can to consider donating
blood now or in the next few
weeks to celebrate spring. It could
be a great way to renew yourself,
and to bring the gift of life to
someone in need.”
The challenge, Red Cross offi-
cials say, is that while blood needs
are constant, blood donors some-
times take a break, particularly
during peak travel times like early
spring. Blood donors who would
otherwise give may wait until later
to make and keep an appoint-
ment.
In an effort to help increase
donor turnout, the Red Cross has
partnered with Meijer to offer
every person who comes out to
donate, the chance to win free
groceries ($250 value). In addi-
tion, everyone who attempts to
donate in April will receive a
free sample of Pacific Shaving
Company’s shaving oil and a
chance to win a Mother’s Day Out
package ($125 value) at a local
salon and spa. In May, everyone
who comes out to donate has a
chance to win a $125 gift card to
Lowe’s for Dad as part of a “Dad’s
to-do List” promotion.

moon. Who wouldn’t want to write
and talk about that experience?
8. Fidel Castro: Bet you didn’t see
that one coming. To try and pry into
this man’s mind would be an interest-
ing challenge. He has been tied with
some of the biggest news events of the
past century. Don’t get me wrong, I
am not condoning some of the things
he has done, but feel he would make a

just to ask, “what were you thinking?”
6. Ernest Hemingway: The man
wrote with a fervant passion. Need I
say more?
7. Walter Cronkite: For decades
he was like a member of our families,
telling us both the good news and the
bad. I am sure he had tons of behind-
the-scenes stories to tell.
8. Sir Winston Churchill: He
inspired the free world to victory in
World War II over Adolf Hitler and
Germany with little more at times
than his words. Pretty amazing stuff.
9. Harry Truman: He will prob-
ably rank as the last “common man”
to hold the presidency. To discuss
the Atomic Bomb, the Cold War and
all the other things that were thrust
in his lap would be an interview that
would be fascinating to hear.
10. Martin Luther King Jr.: He
never lost sight of a goal to make
everyone in this country equal. The
things he overcame made us a better
nation and were nothing short of phe-
nomenial. It would be a thrill to write
his story.
Yes, it would be nice to interview
even one of those people, but I doubt
it will happen before I...

Raising money for

Shop with a Cop
Very few people have started thinking about Christmas
shopping — however the people who make possible
Manistee’s Shop with a Cop program were busy with a
fun fundraiser Saturday at Manistee High School.
Matt McShane of the Michigan Department of
Corrections organized the third annual Shop with a Cop
basketball tournament — that featured two teams from
the Oaks Correctional Facility, one from Camp Pugsley
and another that combined officers from the Manistee
Police Department and Little River Band of Ottawa
Indians tribal police.
Play was round-robin, and when it was over the Camp
Pugsley team won the championship trophy and the City
of Manistee/LRBOI Tribal Police team finished in the run-
ner-up position.
Last year several weeks before Christmas through the
Shop with a Cop program Love INC selected a group
of children who met with police officers at Kmart and
selected $100 in gifts for their families and themselves.
The other major fundraiser for the program is a battle
