Stars. Winning teams have them, and at Beaumont, we’ve got lots of them. Each month, the Recognition Team in each division selects a
“Star of the Month” from your Saluting our Stars nominations.
Sometimes while in the hospital, feeling better can come from things
most people take for granted. That’s where Michele Gamel, R.N.,
Critical Care at Beaumont, Grosse Pointe, went above and beyond
on her time off to help a patient with a makeover.
“After a meeting, Michele told me she had worked the evening
before and that one of her patients was depressed, so she said
she would come in this morning and ‘spruce her up,’” writes her
nominator. “Michele came in before the meeting and helped bathe
the patient, fixed her hair and even brought in makeup to make her
feel better.”
Through her generosity and kind actions, she made the patient
very happy. “Michele is a real shining star at Beaumont,” adds
her nominator.

When Jennifer Martens, nurse clinician at Beaumont, Royal

Oak, saw her breast cancer patients in need of emotional
support, she pulled out all the stops to help organize an
outlet for them to receive that support. Jennifer, along with
her department, helped organize a metastatic breast cancer
support group for the patients.
“She helped me organize the group and volunteered her
free time in the evenings to help facilitate the group,” writes
her nominator. “Jennifer even helped with putting together
packets of information for our ladies.”
“She has been a wealth of information and comfort for her
breast cancer patients,” adds her nominator. “We are really
lucky to have her on our team.”

Matthew Somerville, R.N., Surgical Intensive Care Unit at

Beaumont, Troy, went above and beyond to help a family get
through a difficult time.
The family, whose father had been rushed to the Surgical
Intensive Care Unit in need of quadruple bypass surgery, was
very scared and unsure of what was happening. “Matthew met
us immediately in the waiting room after they took my dad into
surgery,” writes his nominator. “His demeanor was humorous,
yet compassionate. He put us all at ease.”
When the patient was done with surgery, he once again came
to their side. “He was thorough, confident and gave my dad
the best care until the end of his shift,” adds his nominator.
“Matthew is a wonderful nurse and we are fortunate that he was
assigned to our case.”
