Autism. 16 March, 2007.

http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761570224/Autism.html
This website helped me get a general idea of Autism. Also, I
learned a very important idea—that Autism is a spectrum
disorder. This means that there are a wide variety of cases of
people with Autism. I used this fact in my research when reading
personal stories.

Autism. 16 March, 2007.

http://www.medicinenet.com/article/autism.htm This website had
information on all of the topics that I was going to discuss when I
wrote my report. It gave background information on treatments,
symptoms, and the diagnosis. Easy-to-read and helpful, this
website acted as a guideline for my report.

Autism Information Center. 28 March, 2007.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/faq_prevalence.htm This
website gave me important statistics and graphs that I used
while researching my report. It gave me a description of the
Autism A.L.A.R.M., and also brought a better idea of how many
people with Autism there are in the world. Because of this
website, my peers will find that Autism is very common in young
adults.

Autism: Signs and Symptoms. 16 March, 2007.

http://www.neurologychannel.com/autism/symptoms.shtml This
website was helpful because it explained some of the symptoms
that are easy to recognize in children with Autism at an early
age. It explained in detail some signs to look out for if a child is
not developing normally. Also, it showed examples of some
behavior.

Causes. 23 March, 2007.

http://mayoclinic.com/health/autism/DS00348/DSECTION=3
Helpful and resourceful, this website explained in great detail
about the possible causes. It was well-written and was easy to
comprehend, so I could easily put the facts in my own words. It
also described treatments for Autism, some for which I was
familiar with and some that I was not. Overall, this website has
resources that I could not do without.
Brady, Nancy. Personal Interview. 25 March, 2007. As Nick’s
facilitator, Nancy gave me an idea of how it is like to be his
facilitator. As Nick’s mom, Nancy shared experiences of
Nicholas’ diagnosis and treatments. When I was using quotes,
Nancy’s resources from this interview really helped.

Brady, Nicholas. Personal Interview. 25 March, 2007. Nicholas’

interview gave a personal account for how he types and how FC
has helped him throughout his life. I think that my peers will find
this interview and some of Nicholas’ quotes very interesting and
inspiring.

Fihe, Tyler. Tyler Fihe. 16 March 2007. http://www.breaking-the-

barriers.org/breaking-the-barriers/stories_tyler.htm# Tyler’s
personal story touched me when I was researching interviews.
Tyler’s interview was very helpful when getting an idea of FC and
the controversy surrounding it. From this website, I leaned that
many people are against this tactic of communication and are
also against the people who are trying to break the barriers of
Autism.

Johnson, Richard, et al. A Genius Explains. 16 March, 2007.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/weekend/story/0,,1409903,00.html
This was an extraordinary in-depth interview in which an Autistic
savant, Daniel Tammet, explained how he can do amazing things
in math. Although I did not mention this interview in my paper, it
brought a better understanding of the genius in Autism, and I
think that my peers will be impacted by the ability of these
people like Tammet.

Kasa-Hendrickson, Christi. (2006). “Typing to Communicate:

Understanding Facilitated Communication.” Autism Advocate.
Third edition 2006. Vol. 43 No. 3: 29-32. This article helped
immensely when I was researching my topic. It explained
thoroughly of what Facilitated Communication (FC) was and the
success of the families who have tried it. It informed me of the
nuts and bolts of FC and helped me realize that people with
Autism have a voice that wants to be heard.

Kluth, Paula. (2003). You’re Going To Love This Kid. Teaching

Students with Autism in the Inclusive Classroom. Baltimore:
Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co. When I was researching my
report, I used quotes, definitions and statistics from this book. It
was very interesting to learn about teachers presuming
competence in their students with Autism. I also leaned that
people with Autism experience things differently than we do, and
so this book inspired my title for my report.
