TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
FOR
11KV VOLTAGE REGULATOR
1. Scope : This specification is intended to describe the technical specification for oil
immersed air-cooled 11kV, 50Hz Automatic Step Voltage Regulator for 11KV,
50Hz distribution system.
This specification covers step voltage regulators of the following voltage ratio’s and
ratings.
a) 11000/11000 ± 10% volts single phase step voltage regulator of rated load
current 300A/328A
2. References.
IEEE Std C57.15: IEEE Standard Requirements for terminology and test code for step-
voltage regulators.
IEC 60296: Specification for unused mineral insulating oil for transformers & switchgear.
BS 381C: Specification for colors for identification, coding &n special purposed.
For the purpose of this specification the definition given in the references standards shall
apply.
4.0 Service & System Conditions: The following service & system condition is
required to operate the voltage regulators.
4.1. Climatic Conditions: The voltage regulator shall be suitable for continuous
operation for indoors/outdoors in tropical areas at altitudes of up 1000 meter above see
level, humidity of upto 90%, average ambient temperature 40 degree Celsius.
4.2. The voltage regulators will be connected between line to line ( delta configuration)
in a 3-phase system.
4.3. The system nominal voltage is 11000 volts with system highest voltage of 12000
volts and a frequency of 50Hz. Both primary and secondary voltage systems are 3-phase
3-wires.
5. Design & Construction: The regulators furnished under this specification shall be
designed and tested in accordance with IEEE Std C%&.15, latest version thereof. The
standard shall form part of this specification.
The regulators shall be designed to connect with a 11kV 3-phase system in a close delta
or open delta formation. It should also be possible to connect the regulators is star(Y)
formation.
The automatic voltage regulators shall be completely self-contained and provide ±10%
regulation in thirty two-steps of approximately 5/8 % each.
The tap changing position shall be motor driven, quick-break slow-make type and shall
be completely oil immerged. The regulators must be automatically controlled responding
to changes in the system voltage to initiate the desired tap change.
The inside of the tank shall be coated with resisting varnish or paint so that oil can’t
make contact with metal ant any part.
The regulator winding shall include thermally upgraded insulation to permit operation of
the regulator up to 75 degree Celsius temperature rise without loss of life of the
insulation system. At 75 degree Celsius temperature rise the regulator shall provide 12%
extra capacity over the base current.
A suitably patterned epoxy coated insulation paper shall be used in the winding. Prior to
assembly of the core, the winding shall be backed with sufficient mechanical pressure
exported on the winding to assure a complete bonding of the insulation to improve its
short circuit current withstand capabilities as specified by IEEE Std C57.15.
The winding must be constructed with high conductivity electrolytic copper capable of
sustaining short circuit voltages and currents on the regulators.
The series winding shall have load bonus features which shall allow extra current flow
above the rated for reduce regulations limit (the upper limit ± 10%). The
manufacturer/supplier must have to provide a table showing the load binus versus
regulation limits settings.
6. External Features Constructions: The tanks shall be round, sealed and constructed
of mild steel plates fabricated by pressing or rolling. The complete regulator must be
painted to protect against corrosion and the final color exterior surface shall be Dark
Admiralty Gery color No. 632 as per BS 381C with a coating of not less than 80 microns.
The regulators shall be provided with an external metal oxide varistor (MOV) bypass
arrester connected across the series winding.
An external oil sight gauge shall be provided which indicates oil level.
An external dial type position indicator with drag hand and load bonus adjustment shall
indicate the tap changer position. The position indicator shall be mounted above the oil
level.
