Dear Biomedical Pathway,

I am a student at the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders and am interested in getting
an internship with your company. I am highly intrigued by the work your company has been doing
in order to improve research being done on Leukemia treatments.

I have 3 years of experience in the Biomedical Pathway at my school, which has helped me to learn
many advanced medical terms and concepts. I am in the National Junior Honor Society, an Am-
bassador, and do at least 20 hours of service work per year. I also participate on a dance company,
which practices for 9 hours every week. I have great work ethics, am able to adapt to changing
schedules, and can work with people very well. I feel like these qualities provide me with a suffi-
cient amount of experience that your company could benefit from.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter and I hope you will consider having me as an
intern. I would love to meet with you in person to discuss any further information and review my
qualifications. Feel free to contact me at alee@annrichardsstars.com. I look forward to hearing
from you soon.

Sincerely,

Andrea Lee

GASTROENTEROLOGIST

• Gastroenterologists must go through a lot of training and have a high level of

medical education. They are required to have gone through medical school and be
licensed to practice medicine. Once this has been done, people striving to become a
gastroenterologist need to go through three years of residency and then another two years
of a gastroenterology fellowship. In order to be a board-certified gastroenterologist, they
need an internal medicine certification, 18 months of clinical practice and have to pass
an exam. Gastroenterologists must also be able to communicate well with others and be
able to make the correct diagnosis easily.
• Gastroenterologists deal with diseases that concern the digestive system. They typically
work in clinical practices, where they diagnose patients and prescribe medicine to treat
the patients. If and when needed, they have to perform surgeries in order to treat the
disease that someone may have. The gastroenterologists are also required to fill out
patient files and document the patient illnesses.
• Gastroenterologists typically make between $95,000 and $145,000 when they first start
their job. Once they have been practicing for a long time and have a good amount of
experience in the field, they make an average of $233,000. Gastroenterologists who open
their own practice have a higher income than those who work for a practice.

In the Biomedical pathway at the Ann Richards School, we are required to do research on
different medical fields that we should consider as a career. This paper was for my re-
search on Gastroenterology. When doing our Ditinguished Achievement Program projects
in class, I used this research to play the part of a Gastroenterologist on my medical team.
A report on selected issues for the upcoming Middle East Conference, presented by the Lee Institute for Ameri-
can Policy
Our institute has put together a report on four issues that we feel will be essential for Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton’s conference in Dubai. The report consists of basic background information for each issue, but
additional information can be provided upon request. Along with the background information, we have in-
cluded future problems that we feel may occur and we have provided reasonable solutions. These topics were
researched and arranged by Andrea Lee.

Sections:

1. What are key events in the U.S. government’s policy for dealing with the Taliban and al-Qaeda?

2. How has the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan provided a safe haven for terrorists and how can
these countries help us to defeat the terrorists?

3. Bibliography

1. What are key events in the U.S. government's policy for dealing with the Taliban and al-Qaeda?

Background: The Taliban is a religious group that formed in Afghanistan in 1994 and they were trying to turn
the country into an Islamic state of their liking. They controlled the country based on their own interpretations
of the sharia, or Islamic law. Throughout the 1990's they performed many murders, prohibited many daily
activities and put restrictions on women’s rights. From 1996 to 2002 they created strict laws against women's
roles in society. They required women to wear a dress that covered their whole body and they were not allowed
to walk out of their homes without a male escort. On September 11, 2001, two commercial airplanes were
hijacked by religious extremists and crashed into the twin towers in New York. The U.S. believes that these
attacks were controlled by the terrorist network, al-Qaeda, which had been hiding out in Afghanistan. When the
United States troops tried to defeat al-Qaeda, the Taliban protected them. The U.S. began immediate attacks in
Afghanistan and removed the Taliban from power on December 7, 2004.

Important Points:

1. War still rages in Afghanistan and various parts of the Middle East. The terrorists who were in Afghani-
stan have now moved to the border into Pakistan, putting Pakistan citizens in danger. The U.S. fears that if they
leave, then the terrorists may take over both countries. On March 27, 2009, President Barack Obama made a
speech stating his policy for dealing with al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
2. The United States military has been fighting in Afghanistan for six years, but situations seem to be getting
worse as al-Qaeda has moved to the border into Pakistan. This is dangerous for many people around the world
because this base for the terrorists provides them with a place to plan more terrorist attacks. President Barack
Obama believes that if the U.S. does not aid Pakistan and help to get rid of the terrorists, it will put U.S. citizens
in danger.
3. President Barack Obama’s new policy for dealing with al-Qaeda and the Taliban has been made to defeat
al-Qaeda and destroy the safe haven that they are kept in. The policy includes providing $1.5 billion a year to
Pakistan and sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan, which was requested by the Afghan government. The
withdraw of troops will begin in the middle of 2011.

This was a paper that I wrote for my final project in the first semester of Pre-AP Geogra-
phy. We were asked to research different problems that were occuring in the Middle East
and then come up with a solution to solve them.
Problems: If troops are taken out of the Middle East in 2011, it leaves them with about a year and a half to
defeat the Taliban. How can we be sure that at this time, all terrorists will have been defeated? If not all of the
terrorists are defeated and a stabilized government is not put in place, then the Taliban could be created again.
If the situation is not resolved by this time and troops are forced to stay in the Middle East, then citizens in the
U.S. could become upset because they are still at war.

Suggestions: Our institute has suggested that the U.S. government rethink how long the troops will be in
Afghanistan and Pakistan. The government needs to consider whether or not al-Qaeda and the Taliban will be
destroyed by this time. They also need to take into consideration whether or not there will be a government es-
tablished. The U.S. can not leave the Middle East without achieving both of these goals, so U.S. citizens should
not be told that the troops will be pulled out so soon if the government can not be certain that both goals will be
met. The Lee Institute believes that the citizens of the United States should be told that the troops will not be
pulled out until at least 2012. If needed, more troops should be sent to the Middle East, but they should be there
to help train Pakistan and Afghan troops.

2. How has the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan provided a safe haven for terrorists and how
can these countries help us to defeat the terrorists?

Background: In 2001, the United States troops entered the Middle East in order to defeat the terrorists. The
terrorist network, al-Qaeda, escaped across the Afghanistan border into Pakistan and created a safe haven for
themselves in the Hindu Kush. This area, located on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, is made up
of many mountain ranges. The rough terrain and mountains provide a great place for the terrorists to hide out.
While in hiding, they can rest, train their troops, and they have a safe place to plan out any other terrorist at-
tacks.

Important Points:

1. The culture around this area has allowed al-Qaeda to hide out for so long. This area does not have a set
government of any kind, so the terrorists can stay there with out breaking any laws. The Taliban, who is still in
the Afghanistan, tries to protect al-Qaeda as much as they can so that they can work together to have the Taliban
regain control.
2. Since there is not a set government on the border area, neither Pakistan or Afghanistan has been able to re-
move the Taliban. These countries do not have any control over the area and are therefore not able to force the
Taliban to leave. This has put the terrorists at an advantage and they are able to move freely across the border,
yet they can not cross into areas controlled by the Afghanistan or Pakistan governments.
3. The Pakistani intelligence agency, or ISI, has been sending supplies, money and guidance to the Taliban in-
surgency. This is so that Pakistan can have a friendly relationship with the Taliban after the United States troops
leave.

Problems: There have not been any United States troops sent to Pakistan, other than the few that are training the
Pakistani military trainers. Obama has decided to send more troops into Afghanistan to help resolve the situa-
tion in that area, but if there are no troops in Pakistan, doesn’t that put the Pakistani people in danger? Also, if
the Pakistani ISI has been sending money and guidance to the Taliban insurgency, then can the United States
trust them in helping fight against the Taliban?
Suggestions: If Obama were to send troops to Afghanistan and Pakistan, we could potentially surround the
terrorists in the Hindu Kush. We would have a large amount of troops on all sides of the terrorists which could
help us to defeat them. The Lee Institute also believes that the U.S. government should speak with the Pakistani
government and ISI about their relationship with the Taliban. If the United States government can convince
thePakistani ISI to stop helping the Taliban, then it would allow us to have an even larger chance of defeating
the terrorists in the Middle East.
