Recycling

Why it is so important and how to do it?

Recycling saves energy, reduces raw material extraction and combats climate change. The vast majority
of studies have found that recycling our rubbish is better for the environment rather than incinerating or
land filling it.
Why land fill and incineration is not useful?
Because when waste buried in landfill sites, it release climate change gases and pollute the soil and
water. We should have to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste we landfill otherwise it will be
disastrous for us. Inceneration is a process which is most disastrous for us as it produce air pollution
Nonetheless, when comparing landfill, incineration and recycling economically, recycling has
considerable economic merit.

Why recycle?
Recycling saves raw materials
Recycling reduces the need for raw materials such as metals, forests and oil and so reduces our
impact on the environment. We are consuming an increasing quantity of raw materials.
Extracting virgin materials is a key cause of global habitat loss.
For example,
1. Demand for paper and cardboard is threatening ancient woodlands.
Virgin materials need to be refined and processed to create products, requiring vast amounts of
energy and the use of polluting chemicals further causing the destruction of habitats.
For example,
1. making one ton of aluminum needs 4 tons of chemicals and 8 tons of bauxite (the mineral ore),
and it takes 95 percent less energy1 to make a recycled aluminum It can make one from virgin
material.
On top of materials needed, the creation of waste slag and the large areas of land
required for industrial smelting cause considerable environmental problems.
Recycling creates jobs
The process of recycling creates more jobs than incineration and landfill. There is still a huge potential
for growth in the reprocessing sector, particularly in areas with strong manufacturing industry.
Studies have estimated (conservatively) that for every ton recycled 5.9 jobs are created. This figure
does not include supplementary jobs also created down the line, which have been estimated as one
additional job for every position created at the reprocessing stage. It has also been suggested that
recycling newspapers creates three times as many jobs as incinerating them and 9 new jobs could be
created per 1000 tons recycling material

Now question rises, how can I participate in recycling?

There are few steps which you can do personally and I assure you that it will help in recycling.

 Buy products made from or packaged in recycled or returnable containers. Some packaging
made from recycled materials is marked with a recycling symbol. If the inside of a box is gray,
this means the box was made of recycled material.

 Buy items in the largest possible size because you'll use fewer containers this way.
 Avoid a disposable product when a reusable one will work just as well.

 DO NOT crush glass bottles or jars. These are usually hand sorted at processing centers and
crushed by machines.

 Buy items in containers that can be accepted by local recycling programs and centers.
Concluding sentence:

“We must adjust to changing times and still hold to

unchanging principles”
