FKGST TAN DELTA TESTER

INSTRUCTION MANUAL

I. INTRODUCTION

1.1 DESCRIPTION

FKGS Tan Delta (dissipation factor) Tester consists of variable frequency power, tan delta
bridge, testing transformer and standard capacitor. Variable frequency power can produce
five kinds of frequency: 45Hz, 50Hz, 55Hz, 60Hz and 65Hz under which test can be done.
Variable frequency technique adopted in this tester can ensure high accuracy in high
interference environment.

1.2 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

 The tester can produce 12 kV high voltage which is outputted from HV output
terminal. Do make sure the GND earth terminal is well connected to earth.
 All the operators and assistants must read this instruction manual carefully before
test and operate strictly as per this manual. Safety barrier must be set up around the
test field and must be with warning marks. Non-operators should not enter into this
safety barrier.
 Operators are only allowed to press buttons in front panel. Touching or being close
to the HV output (within 20cm) is forbidden.
 The test object must be disconnected with power. Never connect this tester to live
object.
 Do not use the tester in flammable or explosive environment.
 If the test equipment is operated properly and all grounds correctly made, test
personnel need not wear rubber gloves. As a routine safety procedure, however,
some users require that rubber gloves be worn, not only when making connections
to the HV terminals, but also when manipulating the controls. FANKE consider this
an excellent safety practice.
 Follow the expert advice if the operators are with heart peacemaker which will be
affected by discharge, strong power and electromagnetism field.

WARNING
Operation disobeying the above safety precautions will result in accident and wrong
test result.
II. OPERATIONAL ENVIRONMENT

Double frequency test mode is suggested in high interference environment. For example, if
the frequency of interference source is 50Hz, we suggest using 45Hz/55Hz double
frequency to test and use 55Hz/65Hz to test if the frequency of interference source is 60Hz.
Test voltage must be higher than 5kV.

V. OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTION

Note:
 Make sure GND terminal (earth terminal) is reliably connected with earth before
test.
 The HV output terminal can output upto 12kV high voltage. Keep away from this
terminal.
 The tester must be operated by high voltage professionals.
 HV output wire must keep insulated to earth and the insulation level should be
higher that 12kV.
Make sure all the above instructions are followed or else damage to tester and human will
be introduced.

Follow the following notes to ensure accuracy:

 Make sure the environment is proper to test. High temperature and humidity will
result in damage to tester.
 In external HV measurement, current of test object must be higher than 10mA, or
the accuracy will be affected.
 Make sure internal HV are switched off in external HV measurement. Or else the
tester will be damaged

MEASUREMNET METHODS

Make sure GND earth terminal is well connected to earth in all test. HV lead must be
insulated to earth. Or the tester will be damaged.
FKGST provides nine kinds of connection mode. The test voltage can be higher than 12kV
in external HV, external standard capacitor, and ungrounded test specimen measurement. It
is forbidden that the test voltage is higher than 12kV in all the other eight connections. Or
else it will bring damage to the tester and even operator.

5.1. Ungrounded Test Specimen Measurement

5.1.1 Internal HV, internal standard capacitor

It can be used when the test object is not fixed to the earth mat.

Wiring diagram of test circuit, see fig 4.

The words YELLOW, RED, BLUE, BLACK in the figures indicates the color of the
fixtures of the leads.

5.3. CVT measurement by means of self-excitation

In CVT measurement by means of self-excitation, 0~50V voltage will output from CVT
output terminal in internal HV transformer. But the output terminal of HV transformer is
still with high voltage. So keep safety distance from this terminal.
Output voltage from CVT terminal is related to that from HV output terminal. When HV
output terminal outputs 0~12kV HV, CVT output terminal will output 0~50V voltage. That
is to say, if output voltage is set at 12kV, the max voltage from CVT output terminal will be
50V. The setting of output voltage from CVT terminal in FKGST is based on the parameter
of CVT. For example, if the transformer ratio of CVT is 10kV/100V and test voltage is
4kV, then output voltage from CVT terminal should be 40V, as per the following formula
12kV/50V=k/40V, then k=9kV. So set the output voltage at 9kV in voltage setting menu.

 Note: Shorted sheet in HV output terminal must be taken out!

Wiring diagram of test circuit, see fig 8:

Fig. 8 CVT Measurement

 Note: Cx connects with of tested capacitor

The capacitance of capacitor connecting to HV terminal must be much higher than that of
internal standard capacitor CN which is 50pF. And tan delta of this capacitor must be very
small or test accuracy will be affected.

5.4. External voltage measurement

In external HV measurement, the internal high voltage must be switched off and shorted
sheet in the HV output must be taken out. Or else the tester will be damaged.

5.4.1 external voltage, internal standard capacitor

Wiring diagram of test circuit, see fig 9 & 10.

 Note: the external voltage must be lower than 12kV.

 Note: For the sake of personal safety, make sure that the earth terminal of the tester is
reliably connected to earth.
