2 Enable User from System

2.1 Purpose of this function


The "User from system" function makes it possible that MCOSMOS, when starting, takes
the user currently logged onto the operating system. In this case there is, consequently,
no necessity for the user to get logged again onto MCOSMOS.
Minimum requirements

This function can only be used with Windows 2000 or Windows


XP Professional.
The use of this function is not possible with Windows XP Home
Edition, Windows NT or Windows 98 (or any lower operating
system).

2.2 User groups relation

Each user of the operating system is a member of an "Operating system user group". The
function designated "User from system" automatically relates every user group to a
MCOSMOS user level (see table).
The registry of user names and passwords in the MCOSMOS user management is no
longer required.
What you have to do is just to define the MCOSMOS user rights required to be related to
the four different MCOSMOS user levels.
Refer to "User Rights".

2.3 Activation of this function


Immediately upon installation of MCOSMOS you can call the MCOSMOS user
management, provided you possess the MCOSMOS administrator rights.
Ö Click on the "Editing" function provided in the PartManager within the "User"
menu.
Ö In the subsequent "User management" window, activate the "User from
system" function in the "Editing" menu".

Only after restart of MCOSMOS the new user rights are regarded
as allocated.

Enable User from System

€ Upon restart of MCOSMOS, in the PartManager's status line you see the
user who is currently logged onto the operating system, and also the
MCOSMOS user level automatically related to said user by the program,
e.g.: Miller, Level 5.
€ The activation of this function is indicated by a tick before the "User from
system" menu entry.

If the "User from system" function has been activated, the "Auto
Login" MCOSMOS function will be ignored.
At the same time, the "Login" function in the "User" menu of the
PartManager is deactivated.

2.4 Resetting the "User from system" function


Only a member of the operating system user group "Administrators" is able to reset the
"User from system" function. To do this, the function is clicked off. The procedure is as
follows:
Ö Click on the "Editing" function in the PartManager.
Ö Deactivate the "User from system" function in the "Editing" menu of the
subsequent "User management" window.

It is quite possible that you wish to give a user who usually belongs only to the "Power
users" group in the operating system, more MCOSMOS rights than those of level 5. This
necessity may arise in cases where this user is to define rights, for example, in the
MCOSMOS user management. Follow these steps:
€ Enter the user in the MCOSMOS user management. The user registration
entry should conform with the way the user logs onto the system. Then it is
necessary that you allocate to the user the level "Admin" in the MCOSMOS
user management.
€ Activate the "User from system" function.
€ If this user would log onto the operating system, he would usually be related
to the MCOSMOS user level 5, as he belongs to the group "Power users".
€ The program, however, locates the same user now also in the MCOSMOS
user management.
€ In the MCOSMOS user management, however, the user is related to the
"Admin" level..
€ Thus, in MCOSMOS, this user has the full administrator rights. The user is
regarded as
• a power user (within the operating system), but...
• nevertheless as an administrator (in MCOSMOS).

The menu "user" gives you following functions:

5 Administrator: Definition

5.1 Administrator: definition and tasks


The administrator (Admin) has - depending on the philosophy of the company - the
following tasks:
‰ registrar or delete new users
‰ input, change, or delete passwords
‰ assign levels to the users
‰ Change User Level
‰ make one user automatically "Login"
‰ assign the rights to the levels
The administrator can only perform his tasks after he has logged in as "Admin" with his
special level: "Admin". This can be seen ...
‰ in the status line of the PartManager window, if this option has been set and
...
‰ in the pull down menu "User". Here the administrator can activate the
"Editing".
With the function "Edit" now active, the administrator is authorised to administrate his
users (see also Login with Password).

5.2 Registration of a New User


An operator can only work with the system, if he has been registered as a user with the
corresponding rights. This registration is done by the administrator using the function "Edit
user" of the pull down menu "User".
Ö After activating the function "User" and "Edit" you come as the administrator
to the window "User management".
Ö In this window you activate once more the "Editing" and "User". Now you get
the complete window for the user management, containing a table with the
users.

5.2.1 The User Management


You manage the users in two windows; the table you see first is only for your information;
you cannot change entries in here.
Editing, in other words delete, change, etc. can only be done in the dialogue window
"User". You get this window by selecting "User", "New" or by a double click on an existing
user entry.
A user must be completely defined. This means ...
€ ... the user alias,
€ ... the user name,
€ ... the group the user is assigned to,
€ ... the level the user is given
€ ... the "auto login" facility.

• The auto login can only be given to one user.


• Example: If you give the auto login to user "A", the auto login for user
"B" is automatically erased.
• The auto login saves you the effort of typing your name and password
after program start.
€ ... the password.

5.2.2 The User Password


The password protects any unauthorised access, and inhibits a login under another
person's name.
€ Therefore it is not listed in the window "User management".
€ For safety reasons, the password is not shown in the input field. Asterisks
are displayed In place of characters.
€ The password can be freely selected, or the administrator gives it to a user.
€ The administrator can define a minimum number of characters for the
password.

5.2.3 The User Group


Users can be assigned groups. The groups and their names are input in the text field
"User group".
€ Up to 1000 groups can be defined.
€ Every single entry can have up to 20 characters.
If you click the arrow besides the text field, a list containing the groups defined by the
administrator. You select one of these to assign this to the user (Windows style).

5.2.4 The User Level


When assigning a level to a user, the levels cannot be changed; they can only be
selected. There are five different levels in addition to the "Admin" level. Each level has its
set of rights (cf. User Rights ). You proceed as known from the Windows operation.

5.2.5 Finish Definition


After you have finished the input, you confirm by <Return>, <Enter>, or by "Okay". Then
you are back again in the window "User management". Here you can see the last input -
except for the password. Now you can ...
€ ... abort by the "X" in the title line or by double click on the Mitutoyo-"M",
€ ... finish and store (cf. Store Changes ) via the menu "Edit",
€ ... activate other functions by the menu "User" ("change","store", etc.),
€ ... or double click on some user entry for further changes.

5.2.6 Window Positions


If you want to arrange your windows in a special way, and to keep these positions for the
next time, you open the menu "Window"; there you can select "Store positions".

5.3 Change a User Entry


Only the administrator can make changes of user entries. (cf. Operator Management).
Ö In the PartManager you select "User"/"Edit". You get a window without
entries.

Ö Then you select "User"/"Edit". You get a complete window "User


management" containing all entries, however, without the passwords. These
should not be easily visible.
Ö You click the user you want to change and select "User"/"change". Or you
just double click the user line you have to change. In each case you get the
window "User"; here you can modify as necessary (for details, cf. New User).

5.4 Store Changes


A user entry does not become effective until it has been permanently stored. If you have
made changes in the window "User", these must be stored in order to become valid (cf.
New User "Finish Entry").
Ö You confirm by <Return>, <Enter> or via the "Ok" button. Then you come to
the window "User management".
Ö You select "Edit"/"finish" in the menu bar and answer the question "Store
changes?". In this case, the window "User Management" is closed, and you
are back in the PartManager.
Ö Or You select "User"/"store" of the menu bar. The question "Store changes?"
has also be answered. Instead of returning to the PartManager, you stay in
the window "User Management".
Note
€ After the changes have been stored, it is not possible to get the original data
back (cf. Cancel Changes ).
€ All steps described above are also valid for changes of the user rights you
have made.

5.5 Cancel Changes


Changes you have made to the user entries or user rights, can be changed as long as you
have not stored them. If you cancel the changes, you can start over again with the data of
the last storing.
Ö In the menu bar of the window "User management" you select
"User"/"Cancel" or "User rights"/"Cancel".
Ö You have to answer the question "Really cancel changes?". Then the original
data are loaded again; your changes are gone.

5.6 Delete User Entry


Ö In the window "User management" you click the user you want to delete.
Ö In the menu bar you select "User"/"Delete"
Ö You answer the question "Delete user?".
€ The change can be made invalid; the user is only really erased from the
system, if you store the changes (cf. Store Changes ).

5.7 Change User Level


Every user has a user level. The level determines the functionality the user can access.
The administrator can change the level at any time. You can find the way to modify the
functionality a user can access at a certain level at User Rights.
Ö In the menu bar of the PartManager you select "User"/"Edit" and you get to
the window "User management".
Ö In the menu bar you select "User"/"change" (cf. Change User Entry ). You
come to the dialogue window "User".
Ö You click on the arrows in the text field of the "Level". You get a list; here you
can click on one of the entries. The text is transferred into the text field
"Level".
Ö Confirm by <Enter>, <Return>, or by the "Ok" button; then you are back
again in the "User management".
Ö You close the window - now containing the changes - by "Edit"/"Finish", and
answer the question "Store changes?" and come back to the PartManager.
Ö You can also store the changes via the function "User"/"store". In this case,
there is also the question "Store changes?", but then you stay in the user
management.
Note
Changes only get valid and effective, after you store them (cf. Store Changes ).

Further Tasks

6 Further Tasks

6.1 Rescan List


This function should only be used by an experienced user – this is in most cases the
administrator. The function can be deactivated by the administrator.
This function is used to restore defective part directories or to recover deleted parts. For
this, the main index file of the part directory will be build up. These main index files make it
possible, to speed up the access of the part files. If there are wrong index files, it can be
impossible to get access to the data. In case of using the function "List restore" all index
files of the selected part directory will be checked and if necessary restored.
Ö You start the function (Rescan List) with the menu bar and the pull down
menu.
€ The list will be automatically updated – without any further dialog window –, if
you use the function.

7 Overview: User Rights

7.1 User Rights


The user levels are assigned to the user rights; i.e. the level of a user determines his
rights, or better the functionality of the program he has access to. The administrator grants
or denies the rights.
Ö In the menu bar of the PartManager you select "User"/"Edit", and you come
to the window "User management".
Ö You select "Edit"/"User rights"; now you have to decide which program
package the user has to work with.
• PartManager
• GEOPAK
• STATPAK
• Task Editor
Ö You select e.g. STATPAK and get to the dialogue window "User rights for
STATPAK".
• In the left column you find the names of the functions.
• The five right columns correspond to the five user levels.
Now proceed as follows:
Ö Activate (click) the function you want to assign to a level (Example "Delete
measurement data").
Ö In the menu bar you click "User rights"/"change" and get to a pull down menu
with the five levels (Level 1 bis 5).
Ö You click the level where this function should be accessible, e.g. level 2.
€ In the column of "Level 2" where the function "Delete measurement data " is
listed, there is a check. Now every user with the level 2 can use this function.

7.1.1 Deny Rights


The procedure is the same as granting the rights; the rights are "toggled", i.e. if they are
granted, the next action will deny it, and vice versa.

7.1.2 Dialogue window


It is faster and easier, however, to double click the line of the table where the function can
be seen. Then you come to a dialogue window with the user rights for the selected
package. Five buttons show which level entitles the user to access the function.
Ö You activate or de-activate the function for the level by a simple click
(toggle).
Ö You confirm by <Enter>, <Return>, or via the "Ok" button.
Ö You can now stay in the "User management", and store the changes via
"User rights"/"store" , or ...
Ö You terminate the action by "Edit"/"finish". In any case you have to answer
the question "Store changes?". You are back in the PartManager.
Note
Changes are only valid after they have been stored.

Overview: User Rights

If you activate the function "User from system", you should only
allocate the Levels 5, 4 and 1. If you allocate the Levels 3 and 2
this action has no effects (cf. Enable User from System

Revision Management

8 Revision Management

8.1 Activate Revision Management


8.1.1 Introduction
The purpose of the revision management is to achieve that only tested part programs are
used in a current measurement operation. Changes need to be captured in a protocol.
This means that the part programs can only be used again in a current measurement
operation when the changes have before been tested and captured in a protocol.
For MCOSMOS, this implies a completely new structure of the part directory and a
modified part administration.

8.1.2 Activate the Function


You can call up the "Revision management" from the PartManager if you have the
appropriate MCOSMOS administrator rights and administrator rights for the operating
system.
Ö In the PartManager, click the function "Edit" in the menu "User".
Ö In the following window "User administration", activate the function "Revision
management" in the menu "Edit".
The dialogue "Revision management" is displayed. Read also the topic "Revision
Management: Settings".
In the top part of the dialogue you define which actions are to be captured in the audit trail
file.
In the bottom part of the dialogue you define which actions require the input of the user
password.
€ A checkmark in front of the menu entry "Revision management" in the user
administration indicates that this function is active.
Ö Close the window "User administration".
Ö Close MCOSMOS.

The revision management is only active after restarting


MCOSMOS. After the restart of MCOSMOS, you see the menu
entry "Revision" in the menu bar of the PartManager.

8.1.3 Start Conditions


Upon the restart of MCOSMOS, the revision management is always in the "Active mode".
The part list shows the error message "No access to part directory" because the revision
management works with special directories. This means that you have first to create a
new part directory using the function "Change directory". This part directory is then
identified by the PartManager with the supplement "Active mode".

Hint
In the active mode, no parts can be created. For creating parts you have to change
to the "Edit mode".
Include parts in revision management
Use the function "Revision" to change to the edit mode for creating new parts or for
including already existing parts in the revision management.

8.1.4 Deactivate the Function


To deactivate the function "Revision management",
Ö open the user administration,
Ö click again the function "Revision management" in the menu "Edit".
Ö Then close MCOSMOS and restart.

Part directories being used in the revision management cannot be


used while the revision management is inactive.

8.2 Revision Management: Settings


8.2.1 Activating the Function
You can call up the MCOSMOS user administration from the PartManager if you have the
appropriate MCOSMOS administrator rights.
Ö In the PartManager, go to the menu "User" and click the function "Edit".
Ö In the following window "User administration", go to the menu "Edit" and
activate the function "Revision management".
Ö The dialogue "Revision management" is displayed.

8.2.2 Additional Audit Trail Entries


In the top part of the dialogue you define which actions are to be captured in the audit trail
file.
User login/logout
Three different entries are possible.
€ If the login function is called up, the entry "USR OUT" is captured in the audit
trail file.
€ If the login function is confirmed with "OK", there are two options:

• If the user name and the corresponding password are valid, the entry
"USR IN" is captured.
• If the user name and the corresponding password are invalid, the
input "USR NOTIN" is captured. In this case, the protocol uses the
user "Nobody". This user account has no user rights.

In the active mode, you can check out a part to edit a part program of the part, as the case
may be. In this case, the entry "P CHKOUT" is captured in the audit trail file.
Change mode
If you want to edit a part program, you need first to activate the edit mode. In this case,
the entry "RM SWEDIT" is captured in the audit trail file.
When you are working in the edit mode and when you start an audited (released) part
program in the repeat mode, you need first to change back into the active mode. In this
case, the entry "RM SWACTV" is captured in the audit trail file.
Delete part (active mode)
When deleting an audited (released) part program, the entry "P DEL" is captured in the
audit trail file. The deleted part is copied into an archive.
Start GEOPAK part program
When starting a GEOPAK part program in the active mode, the entry "GEO RPTPP" is
captured in the audit trail file. Furthermore, the part name and directory name are included
in the protocol.
When exiting the part program an entry will be captured.
This entry could either be "GEO ENDPP", i.e. the GEOPAK part program has been
finished without errors, or "GEO ERRPP", i.e. the GEOPAK part program has been
finished incorrectly.
The entries captured in the audit trail file are listed in an overview in the topic "Audit Trail
File Entries".

8.2.3 Password Input


In the bottom part of the dialogue you define the actions that require the password input of
the user. These settings increase the safety when working with the revision management.
The following actions in the active mode require the password input when you activate
the corresponding check box:
€ Check out
€ Start GEOPAK part program (in repeat mode)
€ Delete part
€ Change mode (active > edit)
The following actions in the edit mode require the input of the password when you
activate the corresponding check box:
€ Check in
€ Change mode (edit > active)

9 Copy Protection:Dongle

9.1 Further Hardware


The software is protected against unauthorised copying by a hardware component; this is
called 'hardlock' or 'dongle'. The dongle is placed on the parallel port of your computer;
this is the interface where usually your printer is connected to. The dongle is put
immediately on this interface, and the printer is then connected to the dongle.
Usually the dongle is transparent and does not disturb the printer operation. However, in
some cases this might not work as designed. In such a case, you should inform the
Mitutoyo technical support. We can either re-configure your dongle, or provide a different
type of dongle: as an alternative to the one connected to the parallel port, we could
provide one connected to a serial port, or even a card which is inserted into a free slot of
your computer.

9.2 Read Dongle Data


If you need more MCOSMOS options than you currently have, these options must be
bought; then the dongle can be re-programmed.
For this, use the function "Read out dongle data" to read the current software attributes of
the dongle. Store these data in a file and send the data, e.g. on a disk, to your Mitutoyo
partner. It is not necessary to dismantle and dispatch the dongle itself. Your operations
with the capabilities you have had before will not be interrupted.
You can also send the file per e-mail or in form of a printout. In the latter case, however,
you must take care that you re-enter the answer correctly.
Proceed as follows
Go via the PartManager and the functions "User", "Edit", "Copy protection" and "Read out"
and you get to the dialogue "Read out".
Ö Start the ProgramManager and use the functions "User", "Edit".
€ The MCOSMOS-Program "User administration" starts.
Ö Via the menu bar "Copy protection" and "Read out" you get to the dialogue
window "Read out".
The dialogue "Read out" provides
€ the serial number of the dongle,
€ the directory path in which the file is stored with the current software
attributes
€ and the file containing the current software attributes.
When clicking the button "Execute", the file is copied with the current software attributes
into the selected directory. The file name consists of the serial number of the dongle and
the file name extension "RTC".

9.3 Program Copy Protection


With the function "Program copy protection ", the new software attributes are read into the
dongle. These are, however, only available after a restart of the complete software, i.e. it
is not sufficient to restart, for example, only GEOPAK to make a new GEOPAK attribute
operative. A restart of the PartManager is mandatory.

The data to be programmed into the dongle are transferred via a file. This file is available
from your Mitutoyo partner.
The file name consists of the serial number of your dongle and the file name extension
"RTU".

To get the file, you must execute the function "Read Out Dongle Data".

Proceed as follows
Ö Start the PartManager and proceed via the functions "User", "Edit".
€ The MCOSMOS-Program "User administration" starts.
Ö Use the menu bar "Copy protection" and "Programming" to get to the
dialogue window "Programmingi".
The dialogue "Programming" provides
€ the serial number of the dongle,
€ the directory path in which the file with the new software attributes is
expected and
€ the file with the new software attributes.
Example:

You have received your new data on a disk. Select in the dialogue window
"Programming" (e.g. using the button "Search") drive "A:". Confirm, e.g. using "Open".
When clicking the button "Execute", the dongle is programmed with the new software
attributes.
The dialogue window "Programming" indicates if the programming has been successfully
completed.
To close the dialogue window "Programming", click the button "Exit".
