Course Outline – I Year
1st Year Motive: The aim of 1st Year - B. Tech. (CS/IT/E&C) is to refresh the
fundamentals of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and carry it on
forward according to the requirements in the preferred degree so as to use
them in the various subjects to be studied in forth coming trimester
efficiently. The Language subject is also given due importance so that the
students can enhance their linguistic & communication skills to compete in
the technological world.

1.1.1 Basics of Mathematics Paper

UNIT – I
Differential Calculus: Partial differentiation, Euler’s theorem, total differential
coefficient, approximate calculations and small errors; Maxima & minima of
two and more independent variables, Lagrange’s methods of multipliers.
Asymptotes, intersection of curve and asymptotes, Curve tracing.

UNIT – II
Integral Calculus: Quadrature (area under plane curves); Rectification
(lengths of arcs of plane curves, Volumes and Surfaces of solids of
revolution. Matrices: Introduction to Matrices and their different types,
Elementary operations on matrices, inverse of a matrix, Determinant of
matrix
(10 Hours)

UNIT – III
Vector Calculus: scalar and vector point functions, Differentiation of vector
functions, gradient, divergence and curl. Integration of a vector function,
line, Surface and volume integrals, Green’s theorem, Gauss’s and Stoke’s
theorem. Differential Equations: Differential equations: first order and first
degree, first order but not of first degree.
(10 Hours)

Note: There will be an assessment after 15 lectures. If a student does not


pass the assessment, she has to join Remedial course in the subject.

Interference of light: Nature of light, Huygen’s wave theory, wave front,
Young’s Double slit experiment, Interference as Superposition of Waves,
Intensity variation, Fringe width. Newton’s rings: Theory and experiment for
determining wavelength of light and refractive index of liquid. Michelson’s
Interferometer: construction and working, Production of circular and straight
line fringes, determination of wavelength of light, determination of
wavelength separation of two nearby wavelengths. Polarization: Production
and detection of plane, circularly and elliptically polarised light, Theory of the
polarised light, Malus law, Quarter-wave and Half wave plates. Optical
Activity: Optical Activity and laws of optical rotation, Measurement of Specific
rotation of a sugar solution using a Laurent’s Half Shade and a Bi-quartz
device polarimeter.

UNIT II
Diffraction : Fraunhofer’s diffraction at a single slit, Fraunhofer’s diffraction
due to N slits, Theory and method of measurement of wavelength of a given
light source using plane transmission Grating, Characteristics of Grating
Spectra, Concept of resolving power, Rayleigh’s criterion of resolving limit,
Resolving power of a diffraction Grating. Holography: Holography versus
Photography, Basic theory of Holography, requirements of Holography,
Applications of Holography in microscopy and interferrometry.

UNIT III
Coherence: Spatial and Temporal coherence, coherence length, coherence
time and ‘Q’ factor for light Laser: Spontaneous & Stimulated Emission,
Einstein’s Coefficients, Criterion of Laser action, Theory & design of Ruby
laser He-Ne Lasers, Characteristics of Laser light, Applications of Lasers.
Optical Fibers: Types of Optical Fibers: Step Index and Graded Index Optical
Fiber, Light propagation through optical fiber, Ray optics: Critical angle, Total
Internal reflection, Acceptance angle, Numerical aperture of an optical fiber.

Note: There will be an assessment after fifteen lectures, if any student


found not fit to complete the course; she has to go for a bridge course.

and special behaviors of strong electrolytes.

Polymers & Composites: Classification, thermoplastic and thermosetting
polymers & basic concept of molecular weight, molecular shape, polymer
crystallinity, crystallization, melting & glass transition phenomenon,
polymerization ,vulcanization ,viscoelasticity, deformation fracture, defects
in polymers and fabrication of polymers (injection, transfer, compression and
extraction moulding).Synthesis, properties and uses of PE, Bakelite, nylon,
terylene and classification of composite materials.

substances (No derivations). Dielectric materials: Polarization,

superconductors, Meissner effect, Josephen effect, BCS theory of
superconductivity (No derivations), Applications of superconductors

silica , removal of dissolved gases, carbonate & phosphate

Lubricants: Principle and function of lubricant, types of lubrication,
characteristics properties(Viscosity & viscosity index, flash and fire point,
cloud & pour point aniline point, acid value and saponification value),
theories of lubrication. Reaction Dynamics: Introduction, rate of reaction or
reaction velocity, factors influencing the reaction rate, order of a reaction,
zero and first order reaction, molecularity of a reaction, theory of reaction
rates, activation energy.

UNIT - III
Environmental Pollution and Control: Air pollution-types of pollutants,
sources, effects, sink and control of primary pollutants-CO,NOx,HCs,Sox and
particulates, effects of pollutant on man and environment, Photochemical
smog and acid rain. Water Pollution: Classification of pollutants, their sources
waste water treatment-domestic & industrial. Solid Waste Pollution:
Classification, waste treatment & disposal methods (Compositing, sanitary
land filling, thermal processes, recycling and reuse). Hazardous Wastes:
Classification-radioactive, biomedical and chemical, treatment and disposal-
physical, chemical and biological processes.
