CTS 1.

The competent teacher will use computer systems to run software; to access,
generate, and manipulate data; and to publish results. He or she will also evaluate
performance of hardware and software components of computer systems and apply basic
trouble-shooting strategies as needed.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

The standard wants me to understand that there are many uses and ways into which

technology can be supportive in the classroom. Technology can be used not only as an

instructional tool, but also as a device to help generate ideas, data, and information.

However, it is equally important to look at these systems critically, and also learn the

strategies necessary for trouble-shooting. There are many different types of programs out

there to make manipulating, generating, and accessing data possible quick and easy. It is

important to know how to use and construct the tools necessary to utilize these software

programs effectively.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The artifact I chose, a lesson plan involving technology supports and assessment,

demonstrates my knowledge of “us[ing] appropriate terminology related to computers and

technology in written and oral communications.” I used a SMARTBoard to enhance my

lesson and also SMART Response technology to assess student understanding. The data

gathered from the assessment helps me to evaluate student progress as well as how to

further instruction to increase reliability and validity of my assessments. The artifact also
demonstrates my knowledge of how to “operate a multi-media computer system with

related peripheral devices to successfully install and use a variety of software packages.”

3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

This was a lesson plan I used for my supervisor’s observations. I wanted to demonstrate my

excelling use of technology during instruction and assessment. Throughout my time during

student teaching, having the SMARTBoard and supporting software, I have learned a lot about

its ability to enhance instruction to make it attainable for students. However, it has also caused

me to reflect on his predominance and how my teaching would need to be modified if I was

given a job at a school that didn’t have these types of resources.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

Through the use of technology, I am able to differentiate and modify instruction to help

teach and learn in a diverse society. The use of assessment, and manipulating this data,

allows me to evaluate and reflect upon my own instruction as well as students’ needs and

strengths. Through technology-supported assessments, students can be placed in different

groups and supports reflective of the RTI system. Overall, through fulfilling this standard, I

have demonstrated my ability to address students’ needs through using technology as a

support in the classroom, and how to evaluate student performance as well.
