Schneider Electric provides
energy management for
the first “zero emission”
polar scientific research station
Rueil-Malmaison (France), October 16, 2008 – In Brussels,
Schneider Electric and the International Polar Foundation (IPF) present
the technical part of the first "zero emission" polar scientific research station,
Princess Elisabeth, before its installation in Antarctica.
Schneider Electric is handling all aspects of energy management for this
exceptional project: electrical power supply, technical management, automation,
supervision and remote control of the polar station.
The extreme conditions (violent winds, -40°C) in which the on-board
technologies must operate will demonstrate the quality and reliability of
Schneider Electric products and solutions.
Two of Schneider Electric's employees in Belgium, Jean Chalon and
Wim Van Belle, will participate in the next Belare expedition (Belgian Antarctic
Research Expedition) in 2008-2009, culminating in the official inauguration
of the station before the end of International Polar Year. They will be on
the Utsteinen site (Antarctica) starting in December 2008 to carry out
the integration of the station's technical systems.

Schneider Electric is not only handling electrical
distribution, energy management and automation, but
also the supervision and remote communication of the
Princess Elisabeth station. This will be the first time that
Schneider Electric solutions and products have experienced
such extreme conditions (violent winds, -40°C).

His impressions before

Most of the installations are
prototypes: that is what makes the
project special and interesting, but
also makes it more difficult. We will be
facing unexpected situations, and
many problems will need to be solved
on the spot. We know that, and I am
sure the team will be solid enough to
find appropriate solutions in a very
constructive way.
This is a unique opportunity for this

me to go!

He dislikes: manipulation.
