1. Description
Testing of the power transmission towers grounding (G) quality poses a
serious problem as they are all electrically interconnected by means of
Ground Wires which act as lightning rods, protecting the lines from
atmospheric discharges.
Thus, values that better represent the system capacity to ground lightning
currents than the ones obtained with low frequency conventional
equipments, even when disconnecting the ground wire, are obtained.
6
The test is performed by making the known-value current flow through the
earth diffusion resistance and an auxiliary electrode, called the current
electrode, and by measuring the voltage produced between grounding
and another auxiliary electrode, thrust into the ground in the area of the
potential created by flowing current (Potential Plateau).

2. Control panel
All of the TM-25m buttons, keys, outputs and connections are located on
the panel, and are easily accessible by the operator. The following
graphics show the function of each one of the equipment's items.

3. Power supply
The TM-25m has a built-in rechargeable battery. Furthermore, it can be
powered by mains supply or an external 12 V battery (car battery).

4. Printer
Pressing the b key will print the results and parameters of the last test.
ATTENTION: Do not pull the paper. Never try to put the paper back into
the printer. In any of these cases, the printer may be easily damaged.
4.2. Paper
This printer uses 37 mm - wide thermal paper, which comes in a 33 mm-
diameter reel. The figure shown below indicates how to put the paper.
White side
Yellow side
Press the ) key, (until the paper appears). To remove the old paper reel,
cut the paper next to it and press the ) key. The removal used-reel
operation must be carried out in this way due to the fact that the paper
movement is in one-way only, that is, the paper can be moved in one
direction only.

5. Real time clock and calendar
In order to provide an easier identification of each test, the TM-25m has a
built-in real-time clock/calendar. Date and time must be adjusted with a
PC software (available at www.megabras.com) that synchronizes the
equipment with the PC clock.

Note: If the system tuning is not obtained (normally because the inductance of
the grounding systems is not significant), this will be shown in the display.
If the test is printed, the message “Undefined” for the values Rc and C, with L= 0
will be displayed.

7.2. Looking for the potential profile flat area
After getting the first Grounding Resistance Value, it is necessary to
obtain the greatest amount of points to trace the potential profile curve. In
order to do that, the potential rod (probe) should be always set up
perpendicular to the traced line, in several intermediate points between
the unknown electrode and the current rod, so as to obtain the kind of
curve showed below.
RV
D1 D2 D3 D
The Grounding Resistance Value will be the one obtained in the potential
profile flat zone. Rv in the above mentioned picture. If 3 measurements
with the same value or with an acceptable mistake made by the operator
could not be obtained, (5% is an usual acceptable value), current
electrode distance must be increased in, for example, 50 meters, and
several measurements should be taken again with the probe until finding
the potential profile flat zone. Check always the current.
15
8. Abnormalities indications on the display
If the TM-25m identifies any abnormality causing the measurements to be
excessively inaccurate, or not possible at all, a warning message will be
shown on the display, allowing the operator to identify and correct the
problem.
“R > 300 Ω”
16
9. Auto power-off
The TM-25m auto-turns off after 15 minutes of inactivity.

The computer is now correctly configured to receive data from the
equipment. Press the c key and the TM-25m will send all stored data to
the computer, while the display shows the following message “SENDING
DATA. WAIT...”.
Memory data are available for visualization and storage in the computer.
Most Laptops currently in the market do not have RS232 Port. In this
case, a USB è RS232 converter must be acquired, installing the
corresponding driver in the Laptop simulating a COM Port.
