UNIVERSITY... AT A GLANCE
The founder and mentor Sir Dr. Harisingh Gour‟s desire was to establish an educational
institution of higher learning for rural and deprived population of Central India. He had on his
mind Cambridge and Oxford universities as a model. The university of Saugor, later renamed
as Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, was established in July 1946 by him out of his life
long income by way of donation. Part of a rural and sub urban environment in the heart of the
country, the university has been a centre of higher learning. The university is sixteenth
university of the country and the first of the state of (Central provinces) Madhya Pradesh. The
university has been upgraded to a central university on January 15, 2009 by an Act of
Parliament. The President of India is its Visitor.
The University campus spreads over an area of about 2000 acres on the top of hills,
surrounded by lush green forests, natural and pollution free environment. It manifests to the
foresight and dream of Dr. Harisingh Gour.
The University has gone through a restructuring experience by adopting „School of Study‟
system for promoting intra and inter-school academic programmes. Nine schools established
under the new system offer courses ranging from Natural to Physical Sciences, Applied
Sciences and Technology, Law, Business Management, Applied Geology, Pharmaceutical
Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Music and Performing Arts.
Nationwide competition through entrance tests for admission to undergraduate, postgraduate
and research held at different centers of the country has been attracting young talents. The
nine schools comprising more than 36 independent departments follow credit and grade
based CBCS educational system. The university has a privilege of having several
departments recognized by the UGC under DRS, DSA, COSIST, CAS or AICTE programmes.
There are four hostels for boys and two for girls. University teachers and other officials reside
in the university campus. Our first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru laid down the
'foundation stone' for the university library in 1952 and the Library was named after him. This
library has a collection of more than four hundred thousand books and it is equipped with
electronic and internet facility.
There are excellent museums (one each) in the teaching departments of Applied Geology,
Ancient Indian History, Anthropology, Zoology and a Botanical Garden, recognized by the
BGCI Kew, U.K.
The University has its own infrastructure for essential services. It houses branches of public
offices like Bank, Post Office, Telephone Exchange, Employment and Guidance bureau in the
campus. There is an auditorium for indoor games and a playground for outdoor games, as
well as a well-equipped and furnished "Golden Jubilee Hall" with a seating capacity of 750 for
cultural and academic activities.
The University has various centers for developmental activities such as Academic Staff
College, Central Instrumentation Laboratory, a Study Centre of Indira Gandhi National Open
University (IGNOU), Educational Multi Media Research Centre (EMMRC), Global Fund
sponsored HIV/Aids Counseling Training Centre, Population and Research Centre of Ministry
of Health and Family Welfare and Manuscriptology Research Centre of the Ministry of
Culture, Government of India.
Several alumni of the University have brought glory to the university by their distinguished
services in chosen fields both within and outside the country. More than twenty five of its
students and teachers have been Vice-Chancellors of different Indian Universities and also
D.G.GSI, Government of India. This university has also produced a number of top ranking
television and Cine artists.
Sagar (Saugor) city is well connected by rail and road network situated about 200 kms away
from Jhansi (U.P.) and Bhopal (M.P.) (between Bina-Katni sections of Western-Central
Railway). The university provides a congenial academic atmosphere to the youth to nurture
potential for excellence.

20. MODEL PAPER FOR UG ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

The following is the model set of questions of each category. In this model paper
there is no guarantee of the level and they are for general guidance only. Similar
questions may be for each course.

Comprehension: 1. Passage -1 (For answering question 4-6)

At the same time, ordinarily good memory is so common that we regard a man
who does not passes it as eccentric. I have heard of a father who, having offered to take
the baby out in a pram was tempted by the sunny morning to pause on his journey and
slip into a pub through the door of the bar. A little later, his wife had to do some shopping
which took her past the public house, where to her horror she discovered her sleeping
baby. Angry at her husband's behavior she decided to teach him a lesson. She wheeled
away the pram, picturing to herself his terror when he would come and find the baby
gone.
She arrived home anticipating with angry pleasure the white face and quivering
lips that would soon appear with the news that the baby had been stolen. How annoyed
she was however, when just before lunch her husband came in smiling cheerfully and
asking: 'Well, my dear what is for lunch today?' having forgotten all about the baby and
the fact that he had taken out with him. How many men below the rank of philosopher
would be capable of such absent minded as this? Most of us, I fear, are born with
prosaically efficient memories. If it were not so, the institution of the family could not
