Dr. Anil Gupta is the Chaired Professor of Strategy at INSEAD. He is widely regarded as one
of the world's leading experts on strategy, globalization and emerging markets. He holds a
doctorate from Harvard Business School and has authored, coauthored or co-edited over
seventy papers and four books including Getting China and India Right which was recently
translated into Japanese. Dr. Gupta's numerous honors and awards include: invited speaker at
the World Economic Forum conferences, elected Lifetime Fellow of the Strategic Management
Society as well as the Academy of International Business, awarded the Glueck Best Paper
Award in Business Policy and Strategy from the Academy of Management, inclusion in the
Academy of Management Journals' Hall of Fame, and recognition by Management Interna-
tional Review as one of the “Top 20 North American Superstars” for research in strategy and
organization. Professor Gupta is regularly an invited keynote speaker at major conferences and corporate forums in the USA,
Europe, China and India – including the Business Week CEO Forum, the Global Partnership Summit organized by Confedera-
tion of Indian Industry, the CEO2CEO Summit organized by Chief Executive magazine, and the Yale CEO summit to name a
few.

Steering Committee
Dr. Toshiro Wakayama, International University of Japan

After receiving a PhD from Syracuse University, Dr. Wakayama worked for Xerox Corporation in
the USA. He then returned to Japan and joined the Graduate School of International Management,
International University of Japan. His teaching/research interests are in the area of innovation and
strategy. Currently, his research focuses on the irreducible nature of business and of strategy, through
interview-based field works and system-theoretic perspectives. He has given industry talks at various
organizations such as the Bank of Japan, IBM, Fuji Xerox, Mitsubishi Research Institute, Oracle,
SAP, Mitsui Shipbuilding, Fujitsu Laboratories, and Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting.

Dr. Ji Soo Kim, KAIST Business School, Korea

Dr. Kim is a professor at the Graduate School of Finance, KAIST. His research interests are in
technical human resources development and technology policy in developing economies including
technical start-up IPO in stock exchange, and in Chinese economic development. He holds a
bachelor‟s degree in textile engineering and a master‟s in industrial engineering from Seoul
National University and a PhD in engineering economics from Stanford University. He has worked
as a researcher, intercontinental operations division, at Hewlett Packard company, USA for a year,
and chair of the KOSDAQ committee, Korea for four years. He has been at KAIST since 1984.

Dr. Steven White, Tsinghau University, Beijing

Dr. White is Associate Professor of Management in the School of Economics and Management of
Tsinghua University in Beijing. His research focuses two areas: how to achieve relational fit and
„cooperative advantage‟ from strategic alliances, and how emerging market firms meet the dual
challenges of innovation and internationalization in order to become global competitors. His teach-
ing covers strategy and execution, international business development, M&A and alliances,
leadership and cross-cultural management. After completing his PhD at MIT‟s Sloan School of
Management and before joining Tsinghua, he taught at INSEAD, CEIBS in Shanghai, as well as in
Hong Kong.

Dr. Aneel Karnani, University of Michigan, USA: Dr. Karnani is faculty member of the Strategy
group at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan. He obtained his doctoral degree from
the Harvard Business School, and has held visiting appointments at London Business School,
INSEAD, HEC, Northwestern University, CEIBS, and National University of Singapore among others.
His teaching and research interests include competitive strategy, strategies for growth, and global com-
petition. He has published in a variety of journals including California Management Review, Strategic
Management Journal, and Stanford Social Innovation Review. He is also actively involved in execu-
tive development programs and consulting with companies in the USA, Europe and Asia.

Dr. U. Srinivasa Rangan, Babson College, USA: Dr. Rangan is a professor of strategy and interna-
tional business at Babson College. He received his doctorate from the Harvard Business School.
His research, teaching, and consulting focus on strategic alliances and globalization. He is the co-
author of two books -- Strategic Alliances (HBS Press) and Capital Rising (Palgrave Macmillan).

Presentation: Global Leadership: Assessing the Merits of Executive Importation

Dr. Marta Geletkanycz, Boston College, USA: Dr. Geletkanycz is an Associate Professor of
Strategic Management at Boston College. She holds a B.S. from Penn State University, an M.B.A.
from New York University, and M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. Her work
addresses top management teams and corporate governance, and has appeared in outlets including
Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and Strategic Management
Journal. She actively consults, and also serves as an Associate Editor of Academy of Management
Journal.

Dr. Mary Teagarden, Thunderbird School of Global Management, USA: Dr. Teagarden is
Professor of Global Strategy at Thunderbird School of Global Management, and editor-in-chief of
Thunderbird International Business Review. Mary is an active international consultant who advises
technology-intensive manufacturing and service firms in China, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Brazil.
She has published more than 120 articles, books, chapters, and case studies. In addition, many top
media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, Fox Business, CCTV, ABC, the Financial Times, Harvard
Business School Working Knowledge, CIO and IEEE Spectrum call on her expertise regularly. Mary
serves as an advisor or director on eight international corporate boards.

Dr. Jane Lu, National University of Singapore: Dr. Lu is an associate professor in NUS Business
School, National University of Singapore. She received her Ph.D from the Richard Ivey School of
Business, University of Western Ontario. Her research centers on international strategy such as FDI
location choice, entry mode choice and alliance partner selection. Prior to joining academia, she
worked in management positions in a major international trading company and in Rabobank in China.
She held visiting positions at University of Auckland and Stockholm School of Economics.

Patterns of India-Inspired Innovation in ICT

Dr. Srikanth Kannapan, Independent Consultant, formally with IBM Global Services India and
Xerox PARC: Dr. Kannapan is an independent industry consultant based in Bangalore with more than
twenty years of international experience relating to technology innovation, business strategy and leader-
ship, and entrepreneurship. He earned a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin and was involved
in research, consulting and teaching at Xerox Corporation and Cornell University in the USA. After
returning to India, he built the first business analytics practice for IBM India, and was the founder CEO
of a specialized analytics company later acquired by a US-based VC fund.

Presentation: Latecomers' Transition Strategy From a Technology Follower to a


Technology Leader: Lessons from the New Iron-Making Process Development Case

Dr. Kidae Chung, POSCO Research Institute, Korea: Dr. Chung is senior researcher at POSRI
(POSCO Research Institute) and adjunct professor of KIT (Kumoh National Institute of Technology).
He has worked for POSRI since 1995. He has a Ph.D. from KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of
Science and Technology) and MBA from the State University of New York, Buffalo. He was a visiting
student at SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research), University of Sussex, UK. His research
interests include industrial innovations in the steel industry, technology development stage, latecomer
transition from follower to leader, industrial process innovation success and failure, and impact of
technology to the society.

Presentation: What's driving innovation strategy in Asian firms? A varieties of


capitalism perspective

Dr. Michael Carney, Concordia University, Canada: Dr. Carney is Professor of Management and
Concordia University Research Chair in Strategy & Entrepreneurship at the John Molson School of
Business, Montréal, Canada. He is currently a Senior Editor at the Asia-Pacific Journal of
Management Review. He has published some 40 papers appearing in journals such as the Academy of
Management Journal and the Strategic Management Journal. His research focuses on entrepreneur-
ship and the comparative analysis of business, financial and governance systems and their influence
upon the development of firm capabilities and strategic assets, and national competitiveness. Current
projects include meta-analyses of diversified business groups, and family firm value creation.

Dr. Niraj Dawar, University of Western Ontario, Canada: Dr. Dawar is the Barford Professor

Dr. Masahiro Okada, Keio University, Japan: Dr. Okada is an Associate Professor of Strategy at
the Graduate School of Business Administration, Keio University. Dr. Okada received his Bachelor
of Political Science from Waseda University, M.B.A. from Keio University, and Ph.D. in Business
Administration from Ohio State University. After working for Honda Motors in Japan and the U.S.,
he was engaged in strategy consultation at Arthur D. Little (Japan) for Information Technology
industry in both Japan and the U.S. Currently Dr. Okada conducts research on “inclusive” business
strategies in which social values and economic values are pursued simultaneously.

Dr. Tieying Yu, Boston College, USA: Dr. Yu is an associate professor at Boston College. She
received her M.S. in Economics from Fudan University and her Ph.D. from Texas A & M
University. Her research interests focus on global strategy and competition, competitive dynamics
and competitor analysis. Her work has been published in journals like Academy of Management
Journal and Academy of Management Review. Prior to her academic career, she worked in the
banking industry in Shanghai.

Dr. Andreas Schotter, Thunderbird School of Global Management, USA: Dr. Schotter is
Professor of Strategy at Thunderbird School of Global Management. He is an award-winning
scholar whose thought leadership and expertise has been tapped by top global companies. Before
embarking on an academic career, Dr. Schotter was a senior executive with several multinational
corporations in the automotive, industrial equipment, and consumer goods industries. He has lived
and worked in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Dr. Schotter‟s primary research inter-
ests are multinational corporate development and subsidiary evolution, corporate strategic change,
global innovation and technology management, emerging markets, social enterprising, and the role
of boundary spanners in global firms.

visiting scholar at Nagoya City University and Doshisha University in Japan, as well as Shanghai

Dr. Seung-Kyu Rhee, KAIST Business School, Korea: Dr. Rhee is a professor of Operations and
Supply Chain Management and the Director of CSR Research center at KAIST Graduate School of
Management. He graduated from Seoul National University (BBA), and received his MS and PhD
degrees from the Department of Management Science, KAIST. Dr. Rhee is an expert of Korean manu-
facturing industries and one of the pioneering management scholars studying social and environmental
issues of business management. He has published in J. of Operations Management, Business Strategy
and Environment, Int’l J. of Cleaner Production, Int’l J. of Operations and Production Management,
etc. Dr. Rhee has advised many leading Korean companies on their SCM and CSR issues.

Dr. Junjiro Shintaku, University of Tokyo, Japan: Dr. Shintaku is an Associate Professor of
Corporate Strategy in the Graduate School of Economics at the University of Tokyo where he also
serves as Research Director of the Manufacturing Management Research Center. He has written and
edited many books in Japanese, including Global Strategy of Manufacturing Management (2009),
Strategic Use of Consensus-based Standards (2008), Architecture-based Analysis of Chinese
Manufacturing Industries (2005), Economic Analysis of Video Game Software Industry (2003), and

Dr. Tomofumi Amano, University of Tokyo, Japan: Dr. Amano is an Associate Professor of
Corporate Strategy in the Graduate School of Economics at the University of Tokyo, Japan. His
