► Global trade in rice is around 30 milion tonnes yearly as against 110 million tonnes for wheat.

► As per the latest global rice price index brought out by the FAO, against the estimated level
of 137 in 2007, during the first five months (January-May, 2008), the index has moved to 234,
showing an increase of 81 per cent.

► In case of wheat, wheat price index has moved from 216 in 2007 to 371 during the first four
months of 2008, thus showing an increase of 126 per cent.

► Tightness in the world rice market stems from the imposition of export curbs by major rice
exporting countries, including India, as part of packages launched to tame domestic food inflation.
