Pimsleur Japanese II

Henrik and Joakim’s notes.

While learning this we’ve been taking turns writing down the lessons. Mostly the new words
for each lesson, but sometimes not. When I was looking for lesson notes for CD 2 I notised
that there where many people looking for this but no one seemed to make one of their own, so
this is for all you lazy bastards out there. ;)
One though, if you write your own you will learn the language much better. We’ve used
romanji almost entirely, because hiragana/katakana/kanji should be written on paper to
learned, not on a computer.

Well, that’s it. I’m sure there’s ton of grammatical errors and incorrect spelling, but that’s on
the house! ;)

Kesa. - This Morning.

Asa. - Morning. (not this one, other mornings)

Kinou no asa. - Yesterday morning.

Kyoo wa, nani wo shimasu ka? - What are you going to do today ?

Kaimono. - Shopping.

Kaimono wo shimashita. - I did shopping.

Totemo. - Very./Very much. (Takusan - Many / a lot)

Totemo ii resutoran. - Very good restuarant.

Nihongo wo hanishimashita. - I Spoke Japanese.

Nihongo de hanishimashita. - I Spoke In Japanese.

Nihongo de, X wa nan to iimasu-ka? - How do you say X in japanese?

Kotoba, to iimasu. - It is said Kotoba. (Kotoba = Word)

Sumimasen, Mou itchido itte kudasai. - Excuse me, say it again please.

(Nanimo) Kaitaku arimasen. - I don't want to buy. (Anything)

Yokohama wa, suki desu ka? - Do you like Yokohama?

Hai, Totemo suki desu. - Yes, i like it very much.

Mimasen deshita. - I didn't see.

Yokohama de nani wo mimashita ka? - What did you see in Yokohama?

Kamakura wo shitte imasu ka? - Do you know Kamakura?

Shiri masen. - Don't know "at all".

- Use Shiri masen when you havent got a clue,
- Shiri masen can insult people if you use it wrong, can be to arrogant.
- If you should know the answer, like 1 + 1, but don't know, use wakari masen instead.

Sato san wo shitte imasu ka? - Do you know sato-san?

Koko kara. - From here.

Kamakura wa koko kara tooii desu ka? - Is kamakura far from here?

Donogurai Nihon ni imasu ka? - How long are you going to stay in Japan?

Ashita no asa. - Tomorrow morning.

Ashita no asa, kamakura e ikemasen ka? - Won't you go to kamakura tomorrow morning?

Amari jikan ga arimasen. - I dont have much time. (amari - not much <- Negative)

Ashita shigoto wo shimasu. - I am working tomorrow.

Shigoto ga takusan arimasu! - I have a lot of work!

Ashita no asa, shigoto ga takusan arimasu! - I have a lot of work tomorrow morning!

Amari. - Not much./Too much.

Zehi. - By all means./Certainly.

X wo shitte imasu ka? - Do you know X?

Ito san wo shitte imasu ka? - Do you know Ito?

Asako ni tomodachi ga imasu. - There is a friend over there.

Ano hito. - That person over there.

Namae. - Name.

Ano hito no namae wa nan desu ka? - What is that persons name?

Ano hito wa Ito-san desu. - That persons name is Mrs. Ito.

Ito to mou shimasu. - My name is Ito. Lit. "I say myself Ito".

Ainiku. - Unfortunately.

Shitsurei. - Excuse. (me)

shinakereba. - If I don't do.

Shitsurei shinakereba. - If I don't excuse myself.

Nara nai n desu. - It won't do.

Shitsurei shinakereba nara nai n desu. - I have to excuse myself.

Ima kara. - From now.

Ima kara nani wo shimasu ka? - What do you want to do now?

Saa, wakarimasen. - Well, I don't know.

Okusan wa nihonjin deshou. - I suppose your wife is Japanese.

Chuugokujin. - Chinese person. (Chuugoku - China)

Ocha. - Tea.

Ocha wo nomimasen ka? - Won't you drink tea?

Ocha wo nomu jikan ga arimasu ka? - Do you have the time to drink tea?

Ee, chotto. - Yes, I have a minute./little. (Lit: Yes, little)

Ee, ima chotto jikan ga arimasu. - Yes, I have a little time now

Kimasu. - Comes./Is coming.

Ippai. - One glas. (Counter for cups/glas/bottles of liquid)

Wain wo ippai. - A glas of wine.

Menyuu onegai shimasu. - Menu please.

Aka. - Red. (Also Akai)

Shiro. - White. (Also Shiroi)

Itsu mo. - Always. (Also: usually; Every time)

Itsu mo aka wain wo nomimasu. - I always drink some red wine.

Aka wain wa zenzen nomimasen. - I never drink red wine.

Kanpai! - Cheers! (Lit: Dry up the cup)

Unit 4

Mijikai. - Short.

Mearii san ni wa mijikai desu. - It's short for Mary.

Nagai. - Long.

Mearii san ni wa nagai desu. - It's long for Mary.

Tokidoki. - Sometimes.

Kyou wa amari shigoto ga arimasen, demo tokidoki takusan shigoto ga arimasu. - I don't have
much work today, but sometimes there's alot of work.

Douryo. - Colleague./Companion.

Kara. - Comes from. (in this case)

Douryo amerika kara kimasu. - the colleague comes from amerika.

-nen - Counter for years.

Watashi no douryo wa toukyou ichi nen imasu. - My colleague will stay in tokyo for one year.

Soko ni san nen sunde imasu. - X have been living there for three years.

Dou? - How about?/How?/In What way?

Dou desu ka? - How is it?

Wain wa dou desu ka? - How about wine?

Doko ka shirimasen. - I don't know where it is.

Unit 5

Aruite. - Walk/Go on foot.

Aruite ikimasu. - We can go there on foot.

Mou hitori. - One more Person.

Douryo ga mou hitori kimasu. - Another colleague is coming.

Ryouhou tomo. - Both. (Ryouhou = Both sides/Borth parties, Tomo = Together

with/Including)
Ikemasu. - Go.

Mata nakereba naranai n desu. - We have to wait. (-nakereba naranai = -must/have to)

Koko de mata nakereba naranai n desu. - We have to wait here.

Basu. - Bus.

Yoku - Often. (Unlike "Skilled" as used on CD 1. Different kanji, same pronounciation.)

Basu wa yoku kimasu. - The bus runs often.

Basu wa amari kimasen. - The bus does not come often.

Yoku aruite ikimasu. - Often go there on foot.

Uchi. - Inside./House.

Uchi ni arimasu. - At home/At the house.

Kuruma wa hayai desu. - The car is fast.

Sono ato. - After that.

Sono mae. - Before that.

Kanada jin. - Canadian person.

Aida. - Duration/Interval.

Nagai aida. - For a long time.

Mijikai aida. - For a short time.

Akai kuruma. - Red car.

Shiroi kuruma. - White car.

Ano. - That over there. (Anou - Uhm... : Notice extra hiragana U)

Ano akai kuruma wa douryo no kuruma desu./Ano akai kuruma wa douryo no desu. - That
red car over there is my colleagues.

Amerika kara kimashita. - Someone came from america/someone is from america.

Basutei. - Bus stop.

Kuruma uchi ni arimasu. - The car is at the house.

Teiishiatsu. - T-shirt.

Dare to shinjuku kimasu ka? - Whith whom are you going to shinjuku?

Mochiron. - Ofcourse.

Nanji made O-mise wa aite iimasu ka? - Until what time are the shops open?

Nagai aida nihon no kuruma wo motte iimasuka. - For a long time he had a japanese car.

Nan de shinjuku e ikimasu ka? - How-/By what means- are you going to shinjuku?

Nan de? - How/By what?

Tegami. - Letter.

Itsu tsukimasu ka? - When are you arriving?

Getsuyoubi. - Monday.

Getsuyoubi ni. - On monday.

yu pun. - 10 minutes. (pun - Counter for minutes, Changes to "fun" in some numbers)

ni yu pun. - 20 minutes.

Go ji ju pun mae. - 10 minutes to 5'o clock. 16:50

Go ji ju pun mae ni tsukimasu. - They are arriving at 10 to 5.

Suneideru san tachi. - Mr & Mrs Snyder.

Kayoubi. - Tuesday.

Shokuji wo shimasu. - Do-/Have- a meal. (Can mean breakfast lunch or evening meal)

Biru san ni mo. - For Bill also.

Go ji ju pun. - 10 minutes past 5.

Ikitaku arimasen. - Don't want to go.

Ikimashou. - Lets go. (ましょう - "Let's")

Tabemashou. - Let's eat.

Nomi ni. - For a drink/In order to drink.

Moshi yokereba. - If it's allright.

Goro. - About/Approximately/Towards.

Ichi ji goro. - About one a clock.

Kinyoubi. - Friday.

Doyoubi. - Saturday.

Suneideru san tachi. - The Snider's. (As in plural.)

Ryokou. - Travel/Trip. (りょこう)

Torimasu. - Take. (Also: Catch / Capture)

Yasumi wo torimasu. - I'll take a vacation.

Shichigatsu. - July. (Lit: 7'th month)

Hatchigatsu. - August. (Lit: 8'th month)

Shujin ga taiwan de hataraite imasu - My HUSBAND is working in Taiwan. (Notice emphasis
created by the particle ga)

Shujin wa taiwan de hataraite imasu - My husband is WORKING in taiwan. (Notice change

of emphasis when using the particle wa)

Orimasu. - Same as imasu but more humble.

Kochira. - This person/This side/This direction/Thereafter.

Mada. - Still/Yet/More/Besides.

Ah, arimashita. - Oh, here/there it is. (Lit. something existed.)

Mai nichi nani wo nomimasu ka? - What do you drink every day?

Juu nen mae gasorin ga amari takaku arimasen deshita. - Ten years ago the gasoline wasn't
expensive.

Ii desu yo! - For sure!

Kaketai. - Want to make a phone call./To dial.

Denwa wo kaketai n desu ga. - I would like to make a telephone call.

Ie. - Home/House/Residence/household. (家)

Kodomo tachi wa ie ni imasen. - Our children are not at home.

Musume wa ni ju san sai desu. - The daughter is 23 years old.

Yobu. - To call/To call out/To invite.

Takushii wo yobitai n desu ga. - I would like to call a taxi.

Shoushou omachi kudasai. - Wait a minute please. (More polite than chotto matte kudasai.
Often used by retail service personnel.)

Takushii ga kimashita yo! - The taxi has come!

Byouin. - Hospital.

Guai. - Condition/State/Health.

Kanai ga guai ga warui n desu. - My wife is not feeling well.

Ichi kiro gurai itte kudasai. - Go about one kilometre.

Chikai desu. - It's close. (As in range. Opposite to far)

Yakkyoku. - Pharmacy.

Yon hyaku ni juu en no otsuri desu. - 420 yen in change.

Yuki. - Going.

Oosaka yuki. - Osaka bound. (Going to Osaka)

Ban. - Number.

San. - Track/Line.

Oosaka yuki wa nan ban sen desu ka? - On what track number is the Osaka going?

Nan ban sen desu ka? - What track number is it?

Hachi ban sen desu. - Track/Line number 8.

Osaka made dono gurai desu ka? - How long is it to Osaka? (As in time.)

Kyuukou. - Express train. (きゅうこう)

Kyuukou de yon jupun desu. - By express train it's 40 minutes.

Tokkyuu. - Super express train. (とっきゅう)

Jaa, tokkyuu wa kyuukou yori hayai desu ne? - Hmm, so the super express train is faster than
the express train, right?

Mina shimatte imasu. - Everything is closed. (Mina/minna also means everyone)

Demo, depaato wa aite imasu. - But the department store is open.

koko de matte imasu. - I'll be waiting here.

Doko de kaimasu ka? - Where can i buy them?

Kyuukou wa hachi ban sen desu. - An express train has track number 8.

Tokkyuu wa nana ban sen desu. - A super express train has number 7.

Tokkyuu wa kyuukou yori hayai desu. - An super express train is faster than a express train.

Chikatetsu de ikemasu ka? Soretomo basu de ikemasu ka? - Are you going by subway? Or are
you going by bus?

Chikatetsu ka basu de ikemasu ka? - Are you going by subway or bus?

Basu ka kuruma de ikemasu ka? - Are you going by bus or car?

Basu wa osoi desu. - The bus is slow./The bus is late.

Shinjuku ikanakereba nara nai n desu. - I have to go to Shinjuku.

Tenisu. - Tennis.

Dekimasu. - To be able (in a position) to do/To be up to the task/To be ready.

Tenisu ga dekimasu ka? - Can you play tennis?

Tsugou. - Conveience/condition/circumstances.

Tsugou ga warui n desu. - The convenience is bad. It's not convenient.

Asa wa tsugou ga warui n desu ga. - It's inconvenient in the morning.

Ryouhou tomo tenisu wo shimasu. - Both play tennis.

Ryouhou tomo tenisu ga dekimasu. - Both can play tennis.

Ryouhou tomo tenisu ga suki desu. - Both like tennis.

Yozu. - Good/Skilled.

Tenisu ga yozu desu. - Are good in tennis.

Goshujin yori yozu desu. - Better than her husband.

Mearii san wa goshujin yori yozu desu. - Mary is better than her husband.
Kanari. - Fairly/Considerably/Quite.

Kanari yozu desu. - He plays fairly well./He is rather well.

Kouen. - Park.

Yoyogi kouen de. - At Yoyogi park.

Wednesday. - Suiyoubi.

Sumimasen, suiyobi wa tsugou ga warui n desu. - Sorry, as for wednesday it's not convenient.

Thursday. - Mokuyoubi

Daijyoubu. (だいじょうぶ)- It's safe/ all right/ O.K.

Arigatou gozaimasu, daijyoubu desu. - Thank you, I'm all right

Chikatetsu no eki made. - To the subway station.

Chikatetsu no eki made aruite ikemasu. - To the subway station I walk.

Zuibun. - Extremely/Very.

Zuibun isogashii n desu ne? - You're very busy, aren't you?

(In Pimsleur they use "You're awfully busy aren't you?" which doesn't really convey zuibun
correctly.)

Kissaten. - Coffee shop.

Kissaten e ikemasen ka? - Shall we go to a coffee shop?

Itosan no okusan wa watashi yori jozu desu. - Mr Ito's wife is better than me.

Shiteimasu. - Has been doing. (Shitteimasu. - I know. Similar pronunciation but different
meanings.)

Tenisu wo shiteimasu. - Has been playing tennis.

Tenisu wo shimasu. - Play tennis.

Mo. - As many as.

Itosan wa ju go nen mo tenisu wo shiteimasu. - Mr Ito has been playing tennis for as many as
15 years.

Mokuyoubi tsugou ga ii desu. - Thursday is fine. (As for thursday the convenience is good)

Kedo. - But/However/Although.

Ashita wa yasumi desu kedo. - Tomorrow is a holiday though.

Kamaimasen. - It doesn't matter.

Watashi wa kamaimasen kedo. - For me it doesn’t matter though.

Watashi mo kamaimasen. - It doesn’t matter for me either.

Doko de shimasu ka? - Where should we play? (Speaking about tennis)

Kaigi ga arimasu. - Meeting.

"Kaigi" wa nan to iu imi desu ka? - What does "kaigi" mean?

"Meeting" to iu imi desu. - It means "meeting".
