BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ABBREVIATIONS (Egypt/ANE)
Compiled for the Egyptologists' Electronic Forum (EEF).
version 38 (March 2011)

Below you may find current abbreviations of magazine names and abbreviations of
much used reference works:

• The emphasis of the list is on Egyptological magazines, bulletins,

proceedings et.al. (this list being primarily designed as a FAQ for subscribers
to the EEF and AEL mailing lists).
• However, all magazines dealing with the history and archaeology of
the Ancient Near East are very welcome; also, some anthropological,
theological and Classical publications with occasional articles on Egyptian
themes have been included.
• The list is not restricted to purely scholarly magazines alone, also
scientific magazines for the general public get listed.
• A second goup of entries are the names of monograph series et.al..
• And finally some very well-known multi-volume publications like
dictionaries, encyclopedias, text-editions and similar standard works, with
generally accepted abbreviations, appear on the list, marked with an [*] at the
end of the entry.
• We would very much like to include references to subscription info or
publishers if being available online (website) or via email. Providing a list of
web links for magazines (and for publishers of series) is in fact the second
goal of this page, which can explain why also unabbreviated magazine names
may occur.
• Abbreviations that are also current, but less common, get referred to
the most common abbreviation. Note some duplicate abbreviations do occur,
but these are really found in the literature. In such cases a proposed alternative
for use on the mailing lists is given, between square brackets. Also
abbreviations for magazine names/monograph series that I've not seen in
actual use, are given between [] (they are given for on-list ease of use, but also
with an eye on the mentioned 'second goal' of this page). Abbreviations for
book titles marked with [**] at the end of the entry, are not generally
accepted/employed in the literature, and thus are restricted in use to the
EEF/AEL.
• As mailing lists normally only can support the simplest ASCII
character set, with diacritics other than the basic alphabet not being visible to
many of the subscribers, we must for use on mailinglists settle for
abbreviations without accents and umlauts. So: Ae for Ä, Ue for Ü, Oe for Ö.
In such cases, the normal abbreviations for on paper are refered to
abbreviations suited for email. On paper the accented vowels are, of course, to
be used.
• You can search the page with the Search function on your browser.
• Although flawlessness and completion may be our goals, we are very
aware we did not reach those goals yet. If you have additions or corrections,
please contact A.K. Eyma. Many thanks to Chris Bennett and Federico
Rocchi for their terrific help!
• We have seperate pages on E-Journals and Digitized Periodicals
and Digitized Book Series.
• Of course it would be much appreciated if you did not put this page or
part thereof on another website, please provide a link to this page instead:
http://www.egyptologyforum.org/EEFrefs.html. (There are a few cases of
plagiarism about, e.g. on the Egyptian Dreams Board.)
