Comparison of the painting by Theo van Doesburg

“Counter-Composition” and Rietveld Schroder House

What the painting by Theo van Doesburg and the Rietveld Schorder house
have in common is that both are very simple, with straight and geometric
lines. They have, as their main colors, red, blue and yellow (primary colors)
and white, black and gray. Although there are numerous paintings of Theo van
Doesburg with the name "Counter-Composition", they all have the same
similarities with the Schroder house. The only difference is that the lines are
not vertical and horizontal, but oblique.

Architecture or Painting?
I prefer painting because there is freedom of expression that does not exist in
architecture. Architecture is more rigid and has less movement and the
materials used are not as varied as in painting. Anyone can try to paint, while
only an architect can design a building

Evaluation
1 The works of De Stijl art movement, are mostly geometric and with very few
colors. It feels that all the real forms are transformed into vertical, horizontal
and oblique ones. Curves disappear and the colors are reduced to red, yellow,
blue, white, black and gray, which to me, is a little bit monotonous. But there
are also works that are entertaining, such as, for example, the Zig Zag chair,
designed by Gerrit Rietveld.

2 I really liked the tasks because they allowed me to know the movement and
the most striking works of De Stijl artists. I could also express my opinion
about certain works and exchange opinions with colleagues and teachers,
which was very positive.
Conclusion

• De Stijl was the name given to an art magazine founded in Holland in 1917
by Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian. They were joined by other artists
who talked about how art should be, creating an artistic movement that today
is recognized as revolutionary in the art's world.

• The principles of De Stijl movement were that art should be completely

abstract and geometric. The lines should be vertical and horizontal.

• The colors used should only be primary ones: yellow, red and blue,
accompanied by black, white and gray.
