prospectus. Students are advised not to have any dealing with any other unauthorised Institutions /
Agencies pertaining to admission to any of the courses offered by this Institute. They are cautioned that
admission secured from unauthorised centres will be automatically cancelled.

4. POST-GRADUATE DEGREE COURSES
(A) ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS
Duration - Two Years
(I) REGULATIONS - GENERAL
Admission to the First Year M.A. / M.Music / M.Com. / M.Sc. Degree Courses is
open to candidates who have passed any one of the following Examinations :
[1] Candidates who have passed the Three Year Undergraduate Degree Courses through
the Universities recognised by the University Grants Commission [UGC] with 15 years duration
either under 10 + 2 + 3 [or] 11 + 1 + 3 [or] 11 + 2 + 2 [or] 11 Years S.S.L.C. plus One Year P.U.C.
[or] 10 Years S.S.L.C. plus 2 Years Pre-Degree/P.U.C./Intermediate/Higher Secondary Examination
under 10 + 2 + 3 pattern are eligible for admission to Post-Graduate Degree Courses offered by
this Institute provided they should satisfy the requirement of the concerned branch of study.
[2] Candidates who have passed the Three Year Undergraduate Degree Courses through
the Universities recognised by the University Grants Commission [UGC] with 15 years duration
[i.e.] under All India Senior School Certificate Examination of 12 Years duration are eligible for
admission to Post-Graduate Degree Courses offered by this Institute provided they should satisfy
the requirement of the concerned branch of study.
[3] Candidates who have passed the Three Year Undergraduate Degree Courses through the
Universities recognised by the University Grants Commission [UGC] with 15 years duration [i.e.] under
I.S.C. Examination of 12 Years duration are eligible for admission to Post-Graduate Degree Courses
offered by this Institute provided they satisfy the requirement of the concerned branch of study.
[4] Candidates who have passed the Three Year Undergraduate Degree Courses through the
Universities recognised by the University Grants Commission [UGC] with 15 years duration [i.e.] under
G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination with three subjects at the Advanced Level or Principal Level and
English at the Ordinary or Subsidiary Level are eligible for admission to Post-Graduate Degree Courses
offered by this Institute provided they satisfy the requirement of the concerned branch of study.

(9) M.A. – ECONOMICS
Candidates who have passed the B.A. Economics [or] Corporate Secretaryship [or]
B.Sc. Mathematics [or] Statistics [or] B.Com. [or] B.B.A. [or] B.B.M. [or] any Undergraduate
Social Sciences Degree Examination of this University [REGULAR STREAM/OUS] [or] examinations
of some other Universities accepted as equivalent thereto by this University are eligible for
admission.
(14) M.MUSIC
Candidates who have passed the B.Music [or] B.A. Indian Music [or] B.A. [or] B.Sc.
with any subject as the main [or] any other Degree [or] an examination of any other Universities
accepted as equivalent thereto by this University and qualified in any one of the following
examinations in Music are eligible for admission :
[1] Certificate Course in Karnatic Music offered by the Department of Indian Music under
Industrial Consultancy Programme of University Industry Community Interaction
Centre (UICIC).
[2] Diploma or Sangita Siromani Examination of the University of Madras.
[3] Ezisai Mani Title Examination of Bharathidasan University, Trichy.
[4] Sangitavisarada Examination of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi.

[5] Sangita Siromani Examination in Carnatic Music of Delhi University.
[6] Sangita Vidvan [or] Isaikkalaimani Title Examination [or] Isai Vanar Examination,

[13] Any other Certificate, Title [or] Diploma examination of a recognised University
[or] Statutory Body accepted and approved by the University of Madras.
(15) M.Com.
Candidates who have passed the B.Com. Commerce, Bank Management, Co-operation,
Corporate Secretaryship, Computer Applications, B.A. Industrial Organisation, Co-operation,
B.B.A., B.B.M., B.C.S. and B.Sc. Mathematics [or] B.A. Economics [or] B.Sc. Computer Science
[or] B.C.A. with any two Core–Main papers offered in the B.Com. Degree Course are eligible
for admission.

(19) M.Sc. – COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY
Candidates who have passed the B.A. / B.Sc. Degree Examination of this University
with Psychology as the Main Subject of study are eligible for admission to M.Sc. Degree Course
in Counselling Psychology.
LATERAL ADMISSION
LATERAL
Students who have successfully completed their First Year (or) discontinued Second Year Postgraduate
Degree Courses through the Colleges including Autonomous Colleges affiliated to this University (or) Colleges
including Autonomous Colleges affiliated to other Universities recognised by the UGC/AIU and accepted as
equivalent thereto by the University of Madras, shall be considered for lateral admission to the Second Year
course in the same discipline provided that they should submit their application form for admission together with
original Transfer Certificate/Course Completion Certificate wherein the actual duration of course undergone by
them be appropriately indicated by the Institution/University concerned, with request for exemption of papers
relating to the subjects already passed through their previous Institution/University, together with the original
Statement of Marks of their previous appearances and an authenticated relevant syllabus prescribed by the
Institution/University in original or the syllabus attested by the Principal/Head of the Department of the Institution
in the subject concerned where they have undergone their previous course for verification and to consider for
exemption of papers after perusal by the authorities of the University of Madras.

PASSING MINIMUM
A candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination if he/she obtains not less than 50% of the marks in each
Paper / Practical / Project.
Classification of Successful Candidates
Candidates who have secured not less than 60% of the aggregate marks in the whole examination shall be declared to
have passed the examination in FIRST CLASS. All other successful candidates shall be declared to have passed in SECOND
CLASS.
Candidates who obtain 75% of the marks in the aggregate shall be deemed to have passed the examination in FIRST
CLASS with DISTINCTION provided they pass all the examinations prescribed for the course in the first appearance.
Candidates who pass all the examinations prescribed for the course at the first instance and within a period of two
academic years from admission to the course alone are eligible for RANKING.

The following original Certificates/Documents with two sets of xerox copies attested by
competent authority should be sent along with the application form by the candidates for admission to
M.A. / M.Music / M.Com. / M.Sc. Courses :
(a) Transfer Certificate from the Head of the Institution where the applicant last studied.
Candidates who have passed the qualifying examination (Degree Course) from this University / other
Universities should enclose all the original statements of marks right from their secondary school education
along with the application form.
(c) Provisional Pass Certificate / Degree (Diploma) Certificate of the Qualifying examination.
(d) If the certificates are in a language other than ENGLISH / TAMIL, an authenticated translation in
English duly attested by a Gazetted Officer should be sent along with the original certificates.
(e) Candidates who have not undergone and passed the qualifying examinations under 10 + 2 + 3 or
11 + 1 + 3 or 11 + 2 + 2 pattern or Open University system of this University / other recognised
Universities need not apply, as they are not eligible for admission.
Failure to submit any one or more of the above certificates / documents may entail rejection of
their application.
The application form duly filled-in and signed by the candidate must be accompanied by all the original
certificates mentioned above (a,b,c) for admission to M.A., M.Music., M.Com., and M.Sc., Courses, together
with Registration Fee of Rs.150/- for the Post-Graduate Courses by means of challan paid through the designated
Bank should be sent by Registered Post with Acknowledgement Due or submitted in person to
“The Director, IDE, University of Madras, Chennai - 600 005” for Spot Admission at IDE, Chennai / the
Co-ordinators of the respective Spot Admission Centres in Tamil Nadu / Study Centres outside Tamil Nadu listed
in the prospectus.The Registration Fee paid by means of designated BANK challan towards admission for
the above courses is not refundable under any circumstances.
A Course Completion Certificate will be issued by the Institute on completion of the course or on discontinuance
for the period completed. Such candidates are permitted to take the examinations in which they have not passed
even after the issue of the Course Completion Certificate till the regulations with which the candidate has undergone
the course is in force.
All the original certificates should be attached at the top left corner of the application form with a tag or string
to prevent them from getting lost.
Candidates are advised to take sufficient number of attested copies of their original certificates
before sending them to the Institute.

Candidates pursuing any other course of study at this Institute or elsewhere are eligible for admission to one
additional course at the Certificate or Diploma level offered by this Institute. They will not be permitted to join
any other additional degree course offered by the Institute.
Admission to candidates who have qualified from other Universities/Bodies will be considered only on the
condition that their previous qualifications are recognised by this University. However, action will be taken to recognise
the examination of a recognised University provided the syllabus of the qualifying examination is produced by the
candidate, subject to approval by the authorities of this University.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Students who want to discontinue their courses after the completion of first/second year should inform the
Director, IDE., before the 31st May of every year. Otherwise, full fees will be collected for the subsequent
years. Only after receiving the entire fees, his/her Course Completion Certificate will be issued.
Visually and other physically challenged applicants are advised not to apply for the Practical oriented
M.Sc. Degree Courses.
Candidates who have discontinued the M.A./M.Sc./M.Com. Courses, after passing the papers prescribed
for the First Year Courses, either under the old Non-Semester Pattern or under the Semester Pattern, in the colleges
affiliated to the University of Madras and the Colleges affiliated to other Universities approved by the University
Grants Commission [UGC] and Association of Indian Universities [AIU] are considered for admission to the Second
Year of the Post-Graduate Courses in the same discipline concerned, under the current regulations in this Institute,
subject to the approval by the University authorities. These candidates should also send the required documents
mentioned above.

METHOD OF PAYMENT OF FEES
Students can make their payments with the Banks designated by the Institute of Distance Education,
University of Madras without any additional charge. The challan has three identical parts, Viz. Bank Copy,
IDE Copy and Student Copy. The particulars required in the challan should be filled in by the Candidates without
leaving any columns blank. The BANK will retain Bank Copy, and return the IDE Copy and Student Copy to the
student. The IDE copy of the BANK Challan should be sent / submitted to the Director, IDE for official use.
The student copy should be preserved carefully by the student as a proof of payment. In places where there is no
facility for the payment of fees through the designated banks, students may make the payment by means of Demand
Draft obtained from any of the Nationalized/Scheduled Bank drawn in favour of “The Director, IDE, University
of Madras” payable at Chennai.
The filled in application form should be sent or presented along with the IDE copy of the fee paid challan
endorsed by the BANK for the Registration Fee. This amount is not refundable under any circumstances.
The Tuition Fee and other fees for the First Year should be paid after or at the time of receiving the
intimation letter of provisional admission. For payment of subsequent tuition fees and other fees for second
year, no separate intimation will be sent to the candidates admitted. Hence, candidates are advised to
retain this Prospectus till the completion of the course for guidance and make remittances within the due
dates on their own. The enrolment of the defaulters will automatically stand cancelled. They may, however,
be readmitted to the same course on payment of Rs. 500/- subject to approval by the authorities. Candidates
are not permitted to remit the fees in instalments (Except for the M.Sc. Degree Courses in Physics,
Chemistry, Botany & Zoology).
Students are strictly instructed to use separate challans to pay the Tuition Fees and Examination Fees and
send or present them in separate envelopes. They are requested not to pay both examination and tuition fees
together. The Institute is not responsible for any delay in sending learning materials or statement of marks, etc.,
if the examination and tuition fees are paid together.
Students can use the Fee Collection challan supplied with this Prospectus.
No extension of time will be given, under any circumstances, for payment of fees.
Candidates are advised to send or present the challan to the Institute or at the Study Centre/Spot Admission
Centre as soon as they get it from the bank, so as to enable the Institute to send learning and other materials quickly
or to facilitate collection the learning materials from the Study Centre/Spot Admission Centre.
Students admitted through the Study Centre are advised to forward the payment challan endorsed by the
designated Bank to the Study Centre for onward transmission to the Director and for collecting the learning materials
from the Study Centre. Fees once remitted will not be refunded or adjusted in any manner under any circumstances.
Prescribed text books are not supplied to the candidates by the Institute of Distance Education. Hence they are
advised to get them from the book-sellers. However, the syllabi and the learning materials will be sent to the candidates.
Learning materials will be supplied at the Personal Contact Programme/Study Centre/SpotAdmission Centres. Those
who are not able to receive at the centre may request the Director to despatch the learning materials by post.
The last date for receipt of the tuition fee and postage & stationery fee etc., for all the Second year
Postgraduate Courses is 11.07.2011 for the Academic YearAdmission, and 10.02.2012 for the Calendar YearAdmission.

CHANGE OF COURSE OR MEDIUM
Candidates are advised to make a firm choice of the course of study they wish to pursue and the medium of
instruction before sending the application for admission. Normally, change of subject or medium of instruction will
not be allowed, but in special cases change may be permitted within one month from the date of admission on
payment of the prescribed fee of Rs.500/- subject to approval by the authorities.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
(1) The method of instruction is (a) mailing or distributing learning materials periodically to the students enrolled
and (b) personal contact programme. For each paper of study, a set of learning materials is given to the
students. The learning materials can be collected by the students or his/her representative personally from the
Institute/ Study Centres/ Spot Admission Centres on production of the student’s copy of the payment endorsed
BANK challan. These learning materials will guide the students in effective learning.
(2) In courses where attendance is compulsory, if a student does not attend the compulsory contact programme,
he/she is not eligible to appear for the University Examinations (Theory and Practical). If candidates appear
for the University Examinations (Theory and Practical) without adequate attendance in the compulsory personal
contact programme, they do it at their own risk and it leads to cancellation of their appearance in the
Examinations.
(3) The Personal Contact Programme classes will be arranged for the benefit of the students in Tamil Nadu and
Puducherry and at the Study Centres in India. This programme is meant for classroom lectures on important
topics and clearing the doubts of the students. Students are advised to attend the classes in their own interest for
effective learning.
(4) The venue and dates of PCP Classes will be intimated separately.
ADDRESS SLIP
The applicants for admission are required to furnish their address in each of the six slots provided for the
purpose on a separate sheet attached to the application form. The admission intimation, original certificates and
learning materials will be sent to the address furnished in the Address Slip only. Write the address in capital letters
and use ball pen only.
CHANGE OF ADDRESS
All communications and learning materials in the case of those who opt to receive by post, will be sent to the
candidates to the address given in the application form. Any change in the address should be intimated to the
Institute, Spot Admission Centres and the Study Centres immediately with the enrolment number. Candidates are
advised to make necessary arrangements in the post office for their mail to be redirected to their new address in the
event of a despatch being sent before the change is effected.
IDENTITY CARD
Identity Card will be issued after the First Year tuition fee is paid. The Identity Card will be valid till the
completion of the course. In the event of a student discontinuing a course, the card shall become invalid for the
year / years yet to be completed. Candidates are instructed to preserve their identity cards. They should note that
the examination Hall Tickets will be issued by the Chief Superintendent of the Examination Centres, only on production
of the identity card. The arrear candidates can use the Identity Card for obtaining Hall Tickets even though the
duration of the course of study is over. If the original card is lost, a duplicate card will be issued on payment of
Rs. 100/- through the designated Bank Challan and the payment endorsed Bank Challan is to be sent for this
purpose together with a passport size photograph.

ENROLMENT NUMBER
Enrolment Numbers will be assigned to candidates on admission. The enrolment number will hold good for
the entire duration of the course of study. In communications addressed to the Institute, this number should be
stated. Letters received without the enrolment number will not be entertained.
The Enrolment Number is a twelve digit unique code (alpha-numeric). The first two digits indicate the year of
admission. The third, fourth and the fifth the centre, the sixth, seventh and the eighth the subject and last four the
actual enrolment number.
SCHOLARSHIP
A) Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates who pursue their studies through this Institute under
the Regular Stream alone are eligible for reimbursement of the fees. They are also eligible for an annual
allowance of Rs.500/- towards purchase of essential/prescribed books. This prescribed scholarship
form and other particulars in this connection can be obtained from the Director, Institute of Distance
Education, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai - 600 005.
B) Eligible visually or otherwise physically challenged candidates, can avail themselves of the State Government
Scholarship for the Disabled. The prescribed form may be obtained from the District Rehabilitation Officer in
the districts concerned for reimbursement of non-refundable fees.
C) The eligible SC/ST students are directed to submit the SC/ST scholarship form during their study at IDE only
and no SC/ST scholarship application form will be accepted after the period of study at IDE on any circumstances.
FEE CONCESSION
The Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras offers fee concession to differentially abled
persons and prisoners subject to the following norms. :
(i) Differentially abled candidates with 75% physical disability will be considered for exemption
from tuition fee provided they submit a ‘Disability Certificate’ obtained from “The Director,
Institute of Physical Disability and Rehabilitation”, K.K. Nagar, Chennai.
(ii) Prisoners in Tamil Nadu are also be considered for exemption from tuition fee provided they submit
their application for admission with a ‘No Objection Certificate’ issued by the competent authority.
(iii) Women Students of the IDE., are eligible for 20% concession in tuition fee.
(iv) Graduates of the University of Madras pursuing a Postgraduate Course in the IDE., are eligible
for 20% concession in tutition fee.
(v) Undergraduate students of the IDE., can do one additional Certificate Course (excepting French, German
and Sanskrit) for which tuition fee is waived.
(vi) Postgraduate students of the IDE., can do one additional Diploma Course (excepting French, German
and Sanskrit) for which tuition fee is waived.
(vii) Defence Service Personnel are eligible for 20% concession in tuition fee.
Candidates can avail themselves only one of the above concessions.
SPOT ADMISSION
1) Spot Admission for the first year will be given to those who come to the Institute in person or at the
Spot Admission / Study Centres along with the required certificates / documents.
2) Eligible candidates who seek spot admission can collect their first year learning materials at the Spot Admission
Centres and Study Centres (including the Institute) by producing their copy of the payment
endorsed Bank challan. For particulars of total fees to be paid (excluding Registration Fee), please refer
Page Nos. 26 & 27 Fee Particulars - Course-Wise.
3) The second-year learning materials may also be supplied to the students at the Institute, Spot Admission Centres
and Study Centres on producing the fee-paid challan (IDE copy) towards tuition fee for the second year course.

SECOND YEAR POSTGRADUATE COURSES
Students seeking Lateral Admission to Second Year Postgraduate courses must enclose
two copies of syllabus of the paper / papers for which exemption is requested.
Students desiring to avail themselves of lateral admission to second year Postgraduate courses
should enclose two copies of the syllabus for the first year of their study University / College where they have
undergone the course.
Students who have undergone the first year Postgraduate course in institutions abroad must submit along with
the application an EQUIVALENCE CERTIFICATE obtained from either the University Grants Commission (UGC)
or the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
Students applying for lateral admission must enclose the Transfer Certificate or Course Completion Certificate
issued by the Institution where they did the First Year Postgraduate course. The certificate should clearly state the
period of study without giving scope for any ambiguity. The syllabus enclosed should be attested by the
Principal / Head of the Department of the Institution where they studied. Only after a proper scrutiny of these
documents shall a decision on granting exemption be taken.
Provisional admission will be given with the condition that the student appear for all the papers of the
First year course. However, after the scrutiny of the syllabus, the decision regarding exemption will be communicated
to the student individually.
Student from other Universities and Autonomous Colleges are NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CLASSIFICATION.
Students from colleges affiliated to the University of Madras coming under a different regulation / pattern
are also NOT ELIGIBLE FOR CLASSIFICATION.

DETAILS OF EXAMINATIONS
1. Postgraduate examinations are conducted by the University of Madras at the end of the academic year
as well as the calendar year. The dates of examinations will be announced by the University.
Supplementary examinations are also held for the failed candidates.
2. The examinations are held at the various centres in Tamil Nadu and at Pondicherry, Bangalore,
Mumbai, Kolkatta, Delhi, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Cochin and Port Blair in the Andamans.
Examinations are also held at the Study Centres.
3. On a single day two examinations are conducted. The fore-noon session lasts from 10.00 A.M. to 1.00 P.M.
and after-noon session from 2.00 P.M. to 5.00 P.M. However, for those who have cleared all the papers
of the first year, there will be only one examination on a day.
4. Taking into account the convenience of those who work, examinations are mostly held on Saturdays,
Sundays and other Public holidays.
5. Qualitatively, the examinations are on a par with the examinations for the regular college students.
6. Examinations are held in May-June and October-November every year. The Institute may conduct
examinations during any other time of the year if it so desires.
7. Filled-in application forms should reach the Institute two months prior to the commencement of examinations.
Advertisements will be released in newspapers well in advance regarding the issue and submission of
application forms. Candidates should remain alert to these advertisements and apply in time. Application
forms may also be downloaded from the University Website [www.unom.ac.in / www.ideunom.ac.in].
8. Candidates are requested to pay an additional fee of Rs.50/- towards cost of application form (Rs.25/-),
and Statement of Marks (Rs.25/-). Application forms can also be obtained from the Spot Admission Centres.
9. Candidates are requested to pay the tuition fee in time and get their Identity Cards. Under no circumstances
will a candidate be allowed to obtain hall-tickets or to write the examinations without the Identity Card.
10. Results will be withheld for those who have not paid the tuition and other fees. They can collect the Statement
of Marks only after paying the fees. Such candidates should obtain a 'NO DUE CERTIFICATE' from the
Institute (IDE) and produce it to the Controller of Examinations for obtaining Statement of Marks.
11. Candidates must enclose two copies of passport size photographs every time they apply for examinations.
12. The medium of instruction will be Tamil or English as indicated in the Prospectus. However, students of
M.A. [Historical Studies] and M.Music may take their examinations either in Tamil or English as desired
by them irrespective of the choice made in the application form.

PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATE AND DEGREE
Provisional Certificate will be issued to those who have qualified for the degree after the publication of results.
For obtaining Provisional Certificate and Degree/Diploma, a Fee of Rs.300/- or such fees as may be
in force from time to time, should be paid along with the Final Year Examination Fee.
Prescribed forms for obtaining Provisional Certificate and Degree/Diploma are also available with the
Institute, and at the PCP Centres/Spot Admission Centres/Study Centres and can also be downloaded from the
Website (www.unom.ac.in).

11. STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
PAYMENT OF FEES
Students are advised to avail themselves of the facility offered by the BANKS designated
by the Institute of Distance Education University of Madras, spread all over INDIA for
payment of fees relating to remittance of Registration fee, Tuition fee, Examination fee
and other fees as applicable without any additional charges. A challan in triplicate is
appended to the Prospectus for the purpose of remittance of fees. The challan is also
available in all the designated BANK branches. In places where there is no
designated BANK, the students may make the payment by means of DEMAND DRAFT
obtained from any Nationalised / Schedule Bank drawn in favour of “THE DIRECTOR,
IDE, UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS” payable at Chennai.

12. ADMISSION TO CERTIFICATE & DIPLOMA COURSES
INFORMATION TO CANDIDATES
Along with the course selected, if an applicant wishes to join any one of the Certificate or
Diploma courses simulateneously, he/she should obtain separate Prospectus prescribed for the
Certificate / Diploma Courses on payment of Rs. 100/- in person or Rs. 150/- by post towards the
cost of Application and Prospectus and to submit the application together with bonafide certificate
of the Institution where he/she is studying the Postgraduate Degree Course.
ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS
(A) CERTIFICATE COURSES
CERTIFICATE
a) Candidates undergoing any Degree Course (Regular Stream) of the University of Madras or
any other University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as equivalent thereto by this University
are eligible for admission to the Certificate Courses other than Sanskrit, French & German.
b) Candidates who have passed any Degree Course (Regular Stream / Open University System)
of the University of Madras or any other University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as
equivalent thereto by this University are eligible for admission to the Certificate Courses in
Sanskrit, French & German.
c) A student can additionally enrol for one Certificate Course only at a time.
b) Candidates who have passed any Degree Course (Regular Stream / Open University System)
and Certificate Course in Sanskrit, French & German of the University of Madras or any other
University recognised by UGC/AIU accepted as equivalent thereto by this University are eligible
for admission to the Diploma Courses in Sanskrit, French & German. Graduates who have
done French, German as a second language in the First Year and Second Year of the Degree
Course/Certificate from Alliance Franchaise/Max Muller Bhavan are also eligible for admission
to the respective Diploma Courses.
d) A student can additionally enrol for one Diploma Course only at a time.
