Auburn offers outdoor art, music
AUBURN — The city of Auburn will
continue to build its reputation as an outdoor
arts haven this summer.
In this year’s open-air exhibit, 20 easels
with painted close-ups of local architecture
and landmarks will be scattered throughout
the courthouse square.
Much like the popular “Sculptures on the
Square: Encore” exhibit of 2010, this year’s
“Slices of Auburn: Easelmania” show aims
to bring people downtown. Throughout the
summer, participants will be encouraged to
go on scavenger hunts through downtown to
find what the pictures portray.
“Easelmania” will begin in June and
continue through September. Each easel will
measure 48 by 32 inches.
The Auburn Outdoor Theater will present
at least one concert each week from June
through September in its third season.
The season opens June 3 with a concert
by local rock band Choice.
All concerts offer free admission and start
at 7:30 p.m. unless a different time or an
admission charge is listed. This summer’s

The fishing is good — just ask area

“Bluegill fishing in our lakes is as good
as we’ve ever seen it,” said Jed Pearson, an
Indiana Department of Natural Resources
fisheries biologist. In addition, the DNR
said since the 1980s bass numbers have
doubled in Indiana natural lakes due to the
14-inch minimum limit on the size of bass
that can be taken home by anglers.
An Indiana fishing license costs $17 and
is only $3 for a senior citizen. Those born
before April 1, 1943, don’t need a license,
though state authorities recommend they
carry a driver’s license to prove their
eligibility.
Fishing is free for children 18 years old
and younger, those serving in full-time
military service and those fishing public
waters from farmland they own or lease.

bass, the limit is five.
According state rules, one can fish with
up to three poles at a time and collect
minnows and crayfish. Wild fish can be
used as bait if they meet the size, catch or
possession limit for that species. Goldfish
can be used as live bait, but carp and
gizzard shad can’t be.
Intentionally wasting or destroying fish
is against the rules unless there is a legal
requirement that the species be killed. The
rule includes discarding fish entrails into
state water. It is also illegal to buy, sell or
barter fish, frogs, turtles or other reptiles
and amphibians taken under a fishing or
hunting license.
Once one understands the rules, putting
together a basic tackle box and fishing rig
can be pretty easy. Everything is available
at a local department store. For beginners,
a rod with a push-button fishing reel is
optimum; Zebco is a top brand for that
variety of rig.

The easiest fish to catch are bluegills,
and they love nightcrawlers and other
small, live bait. String on the gooey
nightcrawler (or half the worm, if its long
and juicy), attach the weight toward the
bottom of the line near the hook and put
the bobber above them. The line between

than the area you are fishing is deep.
Then, cast and enjoy. Everything can be

Grill up some fruit to add smoke to beverages

“Your grill’s just an oven, anyway,” she said.
But your oven doesn’t smoke; at least, it shouldn’t.
When it comes to grills, Robyn has most of us beat. She
has nine grills. She just picked up one of those Big Green

Grilled fruit can add smoke to beverages this
summer. Lemons, limes and oranges are grilled, then
used for making margaritas.
I have seen a variety of recipes for grilling fruit, like melon
wrapped in prosciutto. You can do pears, pineapple and a
variety of other fruits that take well to a flame and get a little
charred to bring out a caramelizing effect of the natural sugars.

juice. To add flavor, I throw the lemons in
with the veggies and let them char up a bit.
Of course, they get removed once the dish is
plated. It’s that smoky lemon flavor you’re
trying to impart.
That’s kind of what’s going on with the
grilled drinks. You are grilling the main
source of your juice — lemons, limes,
oranges, whatever — and you are getting an
interesting flavor that would not be present

“Grilled fruit, it adds some smokiness to
your cocktails,” Robyn said.
I get a real kick out of Robyn. You name it
and she’s grilled it. She has taken the
lemonade recipe and used the same principle,
grilled fruit, in other drinks. She used lemons,
limes and oranges to make a grilled version
of margaritas. She’s done the same with
oranges for mimosas, a perfect drink to go
with brunch out on the lake. And if you have
one of those boat grills, why not try making
some french toast for breakfast? If you do it
in the style of Robyn the Grill Grrrl, you add
rum to your egg mixture. Of course, you will
want a griddle to place on your grill.
OK. Robyn says the grilled lemonade
recipe is somewhat labor intensive. It does,
after all, call for six pounds of lemons. And

“I like easy. The grilled lemonade is
work,” she said. “There’s a lot of squeezing.
You have to put your party guests to work.”
While the recipe calls for bourbon, Robyn
says she likes it best with vodka. She will be
demonstrating the cooking of fruit and
making drinks on the Cooking Channel in
June on the show “Food(ography) with Mo
Rocca.”
Here’s an easy one that Robyn shared
that takes little time at all and is perfect to
take advantage of hot coals. It is grilled
romaine. I have seen recipes for a grilled
Caesar, which is similar to what Robyn
does. Only Robyn’s recipe is much less
work, and very little is done when it comes
to dressing the lettuce.

Makes one 64 oz pitcher
INGREDIENTS:
6 pounds lemons, cut in half
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup honey
2 rosemary sprigs (optional)
1 cup Four Roses Bourbon (or bourbon of
your choice)
Dip each half of the cut lemons in sugar
and set aside on a tray to be grilled.
Combine water, sugar and honey in a
saucepan or disposable aluminum tray. Add
a couple of sprigs of rosemary to the pan
add much of anything,” she says.
So, here’s a salad to try with your grilled
lemonade or the rib job drink that follows. It
is one of those things that is so easy to do
once you have the grill fired up to cook some
steaks or ribs or chicken or whatever.
Everything is to taste. Slice romaine lettuce
heads length-wise either in half or in quarters,

Heat up your grill to medium-high heat. For
additional rosemary flavor, throw a handful
of rosemary sprigs on the hot coals just
before grilling.
Grill the lemons cut-side down until nice
grill marks appear (5-7 minutes). Remove
the lemons and set aside to cool.
While grilling the lemons, place the
saucepan with the honey syrup on the grill.
Heat the syrup until sugar and honey are
fully dissolved, giving the rosemary time to
infuse the syrup with flavor.
Let the lemons cool, then squeeze the juice
into a pitcher by hand. Add syrup and water
to taste, along with bourbon and ice. Stir
well and serve.

vodka instead of bourbon.)

First Wake Up With RISE event June 11

CROOKED LAKE — RISE Inc. invites
the public and water lovers to the first Wake
Up With RISE event that will be held June 11
at Steuben County 76 Park at Crooked Lake.
Denise Payton, RISE executive director,
said the event will be a kickoff to summer fun
with a bunch of water-related activities
planned from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. that day.
“We will have a variety of skiing and wake
boarding hosted by local and professional
talents. People will have the opportunity to go
(water) skiing or wake surfing,” she said. “We
wanted to spin off from our October Taste,
Sights and Sounds (event) by having
something unique to our area’s lakes and
showcasing businesses.”
The Steuben County Barefoot Team will
give the first exhibition at 8 a.m.
Payton said there will be volleyball and
corn hole tournaments, canoe races, turtle
races and demonstrations. The cost to enter a
tournament is $15 per person.
Kids’ activities will include a bounce
house, face painting, limbo contest and

hula hoop contests.
Payton said the highlight of the event will
be a ski and wake board show, with clinics.
The clinics will be presented by professionals
and will cost $25 each and preregistration is
necessary by calling RISE.
“Dry Dock Marina will hold a ski event
and provide new Nautique boat rides and
tips,” Payton said.

The summer fun on the water in the
Northeast corner of Indiana is well-known

It is wise to check out “The Handbook
of Indiana Boating Laws and Responsi-
bilities,” even if you are a seasoned
skipper.
The booklets are available at many
marinas, sporting goods stores, bait
houses and law enforcement offices.

Here are some highlights from the guide
for when you head out on to the lake:
Filing a float plan
Before going out on a vessel, it is
always a good idea to leave a float plan
with a relative or friend, or at least with a
local marina. A float plan should:
• Describe the vessel, including its
registration number, length, make,
horsepower and engine type.
• State where you are going, the detailed
route, your planned departure time and
your expected return time.
• Give the name, address and telephone
number of each person on board and an
emergency contact.
Predeparture checklist
You can help assure a good time while
operating your vessel by performing this
predeparture check.
• Check the weather forecast for the area
and timeframe during which you will be
boating.
• Make sure that the steering and throttle
controls operate properly and all lights are
working properly.
• Check for any fuel leaks from the tank,
fuel lines and carburetor.
• Check the engine compartment for oil
leaks.
• Check hose connections for leaks or

ANGOLA — Camping means different
things to different people.
Throughout northeastern Indiana, there
are outdoors vacationing opportunities to
fit most interests. There are a number of
private campgrounds and Chain O’ Lakes
and Pokagon state parks. One could pick
rustic accommodations or a site with
amenities. To keep up with the times,
many campgrounds offer Wi-Fi Internet
connection.
As the season slowly rolls in, many
campgrounds are cooking up special
breakfasts and activities for Mother’s Day.
When Memorial Day hits and schools
close for the summer, campgrounds go
into full swing.
There are camping facilities available in
Steuben, LaGrange, Noble and DeKalb
counties. Some are only open for special
events or have a handful of rustic sites.

Bixler Lake Campground is on the east

side of the lake in Kendallville. Its
wooded sites are available through the
city’s park and recreation department.
Water and electric hookups are provided,
and a camp store offers firewood, ice,
drinks and snacks. There is fishing and
supervised swimming on the 117-acre
Bixler Lake. Part of Bixler Lake Park, the
campground features modern playgrounds,
a ball diamond, nature trails, horseshoe
and volleyball courts and special events.
There is a KOA in Auburn, just off
I-69, available for those just driving
through or staying for a car auction.
Gordon’s Campground in Wolcottville
offers 75 wooded acres at 9500 E. C.R.
600S in LaGrange County. Camping is
first-come, first-served with space for
about 400. Though no reservations are
taken, there is rarely a problem with
space, said manager Miranda Krider.
About 140 sites are taken through the
summer by seasonal campers. There are

said Krider. She does expect a busy
summer, as the economy and gas prices
continue to press pocketbooks.
“People are staying closer and really
taking advantage of what’s close to them,”
Krider said. Last summer, she saw more
people coming from closer, such as around
a two hours’ drive away instead of coming
from greater distances.
The campground has a pool and
playground area for children, and there are
weekend activities. This weekend,
campers can enjoy a bonfire by the barn.
“Last year we had a band for all three
holiday weekends,” said Krider, noting
she’s considering a similar set up this
year. The bands brought in people from
the surrounding community for the music.
Two weekends of Halloween fun at
Gordon’s also have a community flair,
allowing anyone to participate in a
haunted hayride and other activities.

livery in Indiana and has been open since
1971. Along with six river trip options, the
Trading Post will host Paddle for
Parkview on Saturday, June 11.
Located off C.R. 325W near Golden
Lake, Pigeon River Canoe and Camp
boasts six fishing lakes and nearly 100
acres with primitive camping sites. It was
open weekends as of April 1 and will be
open every day except Tuesdays Memorial
Day through October.
Resort at Barton Lake near Fremont offers
540 camp sites, 21 cabins and 18 deluxe
cottages. Three more cottages are
currently being built, said Roger Barry.
The Barry and Corcimglia families own
and operate the park, which has been open
in Fremont for 46 years.
Barry’s son, David, operates a
recreational vehicle business near the
entrance to the park, and also three water
slides that connect to Yogi Bear park. This
year, said Barry, bumper boats will be
added near the slide. There are three
outdoor pools and an indoor pool and a
splash park for children.
The water attractions appeal to those in
the community as well as campers. On a
busy summer day, as many as 3,500
people may enter the park, said Barry.
Camping perks also include paddle
boats and row boat rentals on Barton
Lake, five playgrounds, mini-golf,
swimming beach, lighted basketball
courts, horseshoes and sand volleyball
courts. Consistent with the national chain,
Yogi Bear and his friends Boo Boo, Cindy
Bear and Ranger Smith make visits.
Last year was good at Jellystone, and
Barry said judging from the number of
reservations this summer will be too.
Many spots are already taken for the
month of July, he said. Long-term
campers, those staying for a week or
more, can reserve their favorite site a year
in advance. Other campers can start
making reservations on Jan. 1.
Manager Cheri Lehnertz said most of
the campers at Yogi Bear come from
Michigan and Ohio. Barry added that
some people who live in the region may
be using the park as a close-to-home
vacation instead of going to a national
destination.

come along,” said Barry.
Yogi Bear administration acquired a tram
that will be used to help shuttle people
from parking areas. Activities are planned
throughout the summer, with a focus on
family.
“That’s our business, a family
business,” said Barry.
Circle B Campground on Hogback
Lake is convenient for those traveling
through Steuben County on U.S. 20. The
camp has been open for 35 years and
has expanded, with more sites and a
camp store with a little bit of
everything.
There are over 300 lakefront, wooded
and pull-through lots ranging from
primitive to sites with water and electric
hookups and Circle B offers year-round
camping. There are cabin and lodge
rentals, two pavilions, two playgrounds, a
volleyball court, two basketball courts,
horseshoe pit and a sandy beach on the
lake.
Captain Carl’s Buck Lake Ranch,
located off C.R. 200W near Angola, has
seasonal camping and often offers live
acts on historic stages used by the nation’s
top entertainers in the 1950s and ’60s.
There are hiking trails on the 70 acres and
a private lake.
There are many other options for
camping in the area, with various features
to fit individual needs. Details are
