True Friendship

E
VERYONE IN the whole Champakvan loved
Pinku Deer. He was mischievous, notorious but
also helpful. He was very intelligent and
always stood first in his class.
One day, Pinku stepped out of the house and
reached the city alone. When he reached the city he
felt nervous. There were too many people. Wherever
4 Champak
he went, he found a crowd of
people. Several cars were on
the roads.
There were some
showrooms at the other side of
the road therefore; he tried to
cross the road in order to have a
look at them. Since he was
unaware of the traffic rules and
regulations, he was hit by a car,
coming from the opposite side
while he crossed the road.
Chintu Jackal saw him
being hit. He immediately
noted down the number of the
car and then, rushed to Pinku
in order to help him. The car
had crushed Pinku’s legs and
sped away. Pinku lost
consciousness due to excessive
loss of blood.
Chintu Jackal narrated the
whole incident to the traffic
policeman, Hira Bear. Hira Bear
called the ambulance. He took
the number of the car from
Chintu and asked his co-
workers, on the walky-talky to
catch the car with that number.
Soon the ambulance came
and after helping the wards to
settle Pinku in the ambulance,
Chintu too got into it.
March (First) 2011 5
Doctor Golu Elephant admitted him immediately.
He inspected Pinku and said, “Look, the car has
crushed both his legs badly. He has even lost a lot of
blood. I am trying my best but there is a possibility
that he might lose his legs forever.”
On hearing this Chintu became very worried. He
said, “Doctor, I do not even know him. Whom should
I inform?”
“This is what I found in his pocket. I think there is
a note on which his residential address is written.
Please call someone from his family immediately for I
can operate only after that,” said Golu Doctor.

hintu hired a taxi and went to Champakvan to

C inform his family about him. Pinku’s parents, his
friends and close relatives reached the hospital as soon
as they got the information regarding Pinku’s accident.
All of them were tense and most of them cried on
seeing the condition of Pinku. They pleaded with
Golu Doctor, “Doctor, do anything to save his life.”
“I am doing the best I can. But, you have to wait till
the operation is done.”
Pinku’s parents and friends were praying to god.
The operation was successful, but both his legs were
of no use any more. Everyone went to his room and
when Pinku gained his senses, they all tried to pacify
him.
Pinku cried a lot when he saw his parents, “I came
to the city without informing you. This is the
punishment that I have got.”
“Do not say such things. Everything will be all
right,” said his father caressing him.
He screamed when he saw his legs, “What has
6 Champak
happened to my legs? Will I never be able to walk
again?”
Binni Rabbit said, “Pinku, we all are there with
you. Why are you worried? You will not face any
problem as long as we are alive.”
After a few days he was discharged from the
hospital.
Pinku would lie in his room all the time and think.
‘I will never walk again in my whole life. Now I have
to accept to be like this forever.”
His friends visited him and tried to make him
understand that he should not worry. They tried to
cheer him. They used to feel his pain but were totally
helpless to solve this problem. One day, they all went
to meet Doctor Golu and said, “Doctor Uncle, tell us a
way to get rid of this problem. Our friend will die if
he has to continue living like this for a longer period.”
“There is only one solution for this wheelchair. He
can work and do all routine jobs, sitting on it. He can
even go to the school with the help of a wheelchair. He
can be with you and roam around with you, sitting on
it,” suggested Golu Doctor.
All the friends smiled with relief when they heard
this. Doctor said, “But a wheelchair is quite an
expensive product.”

place from where we can get one,” asked Binni

Each friend contributed their pocket money and

bought a wheel chair. They put it outside Pinku’s
room. Then they went inside and said to him, “Let us
go out, Pinku.”
“Are all of you making fun of me?”
“No, we can never do that,” said Cheeku. He got
the wheel chair inside the room and said, “Look, now
you can roam around freely. You can maneuver it by
your own hands and can even come to school.”
Pinku sat on the wheel chair. Bunty pushed his
chair out of the house. It had been two months since
he had come out of his house. He was quite happy to
feel the fresh air of Champakvan. He looked at his
friends and said, “Friends, how can I thank you all? I
can come to school and roam around like others.”
Pinku’s parents also saw this and admired their
true friendship.

Intelligent Idea

UNTY MONKEY, along with his younger
brother, Buntu, was returning home from his
friend’s house. Bunty was riding the bicycle
and Buntu was sitting on the carrier.
“Brother, hurry up and ride home quickly. The
road is isolated and it is going to be dark soon. I am
quite scared.”
“Do not be scared, Buntu. We will reach the market
area in just five minutes,” said Bunty as he rode the
cycle in speed.
Just then, two people came in front of them and
stopped their bicycle. Their faces were hidden.
“Leave this cycle here and run away otherwise you
will be in trouble,” threatened one of them, whose
face was hidden with a black cloth.
“This is our cycle. We will not give this to you,”
replied Buntu.
“Do you want to live or not?” said the person,
whose face was hidden in a red cloth. He even took
out a knife from his pocket.
“You be quiet, Buntu,” said Bunty, as he was
scared his brother would get hurt by the knife.
“He is right. Now, empty your pockets for you
cannot imagine what we can do to both of you,” said
one of the robbers.
March (First) 2011 9
“Wait, let me check them and find out what all
they have in their pockets,” said the person, whose
face was hidden in the red cloth. Then, he started
checking Bunty and Buntu.
“They have only Rs.20 and three to four toffees in
their pockets.”
“Keep this with you,” said one of them laughing.
“Are you carrying anything else, like watch,
mobile phone, etc.?
“No. we have only books,” said Bunty as he
showed the books to the robbers.
“Ho…ho…ho… these books are of no use to us.
Now, you leave the cycle here and go home. Do not
turn back otherwise…” threatened the person who
was hiding his identity in the red cloth, brandishing
the knife in front of them.
“We will leave,” said Bunty and threw the books
intentionally near the cycle tyre.
“Pick your books quickly and leave from here at
once.”

e are going,” said Bunty and he got down to

“W pick the books. He loosened the valve of the
cycle tyre at the back and the air started coming out of
it. Then, Bunty and Buntu ran away from there.
“Brother, our cycle…”
“Bunty, just follow me. Let us get out of their sight
and then, we will talk,” said Bunty.
After some distance, they stopped and stood at the
back of the tree and started observing the two robbers.
“Brother, they will take our cycle.”
“Buntu, I have loosened the valve of the back tyre
of the cycle, due to which the tyre will deflate the
moment some pressure is applied on the cycle. Then,
they will have to walk and we will be able to easily
chase them.”
“Brother, what was the need to loosen the valve in
order to chase the robbers?”
“Oh Buntu! If they rode the cycle, then they would
have sped away and we would not have been able to
chase them. Now, they have to walk and we will be
able to find them,” explained Bunty.
March (First) 2011 11
Both the robbers took out their masks as soon as
the two brothers had left.
“Lalu, they are gone now. No need to worry. Let us
leave this place.”
“Come, let us ride the cycle and go home,” said
Lalu Hyena to Sattu Jackal.
As soon as Lalu sat on the carrier of the cycle, the
tyre deflated with a loud sound.
“Oh! The cycle punctured as soon as you sat on it.
Now, we have no other option but to walk,” said Lalu
and they started walking.
“Brother, both of them are going.”
“Yes. Now, we have to follow them quietly,” said
Bunty and they started following the robbers.
The two were enjoying the toffees and reached the
market after some time.

PRABHAT
“Sattu, look there, police!”
“Lalu, what are we afraid of? How will they come
to know that we have robbed this cycle?” asked Sattu,
and Lalu smiled.
Lalu and Sattu were crossing the police, when
suddenly both the brothers, who had been following
them, started shouting, “Thief! Thief! Catch hold of
them… They are running away with our cycle.”
Lalu and Sattu took fright when their secret was
revealed in front of the police. Even before they could
think about running from there, they were caught by
the police.
Bunty and Buntu narrated the whole incident to
the police and Lalu and Sattu were arrested. The
brothers got Rs.20 along with their cycle.
“Well done kids! Your alertness and presence of
mind saved your cycle today. The two robbers also got
arrested because of that,” said inspector Tendu.
“But, we lost our toffees. They ate all of them,”
said Buntu pointing the robbers. At this, the police
inspector and Bunty started laughing.

BALEEN WHALE
Baleen Whale, the largest
animal on earth, is a
species of fish that spends
most of its time
underwater. These whales
do not have teeth. But
instead they have rows of
baleen plates that act like a
web or filter. Baleen or
whalebone is a filtering
structure in the mouth of
these whales, which help
swallow small animals
and expel the sea water.

usy Monkey was riding the cycle very fast. It

P was only 10 minutes ago when Bhoppu Monkey

rang his mobile phone. Bhoppu was crying over
the phone, “Pusy, come quickly to the old sacred fig
tree. I was digging there, when it started raining
heavily and I fell down in the pit.”

A Dirty
Trick
Pusy immediately replied, “I am coming right
now, friend. Stop crying. I will take you to the
hospital.”
Pusy took his cycle to reach the old tree. Bhoppu
and Pusy had studied together in school. But Bhoppu
stopped studying in the middle of the session. Pusy’s
other friends told him that Bhoppu was sitting idle at
home and did not do anything.
Pusy reached the tree and called out his name,
“Bhoppu… Bhoppu… Where are you?”
He did not hear any response. Pusy noticed a pit
under the tree. Is Bhoppu inside it? Pusy called
Bhoppu on his mobile phone, but it was switched off.
He took a spade, lying near the tree and started
digging the earth. He dug the earth but could not find
his friend. He rang his friends, Rangu Monkey and
Neel Monkey, and asked them to come there. The
three started looking for Bhoppu. Pusy thought that
Bhoppu must have fallen in the mud. With the help of
Rangu and Neel, Pusy dug the whole place around the
tree.

SUSHIL
After 2 hours, when all the friends
got tired and sat under the tree, they
heard Bhoppu’s laughter from the tree
above. Pusy looked at him in surprise,
“Bhoppu, you are sitting on the tree?
You were watching me while I was
looking for you. You saw how worried I
was. We dug the whole place around
the tree and you…”
“This is it. Friend! I was not able to
dig this place alone. I thought about an
idea of making someone else do this
work for me. If I would have called you
for help, you would have made some
excuse. That is why I called you up and
said that I was stuck in the pit, and see…my work is
done.”
Pusy got angry at this. He said, “This is cheating,
Bhoppu. If you would have called me, I would have
come to help you. But you did not do the right thing
by lying to me, Bhoppu.”
Bhoppu said carelessly, “Oh Pusy! This much
deceit is allowed in friendship. What is there to get
annoyed at?”
Pusy, Rangu and Neel, all the three friends were
very angry over this prank. Neel wanted to give a
blow to Bhoppu for his behaviour, but Pusy stopped
him, “Neel, we will teach him a good lesson by giving
him the same dose.”
Bhoppu’s house was ready now. He thought of
inviting his friends to his house for a party. Pusy got
the news that Bhoppu was throwing a party for his
friends. He quickly went to see Rangu and Neel.
March (First) 2011 19
Bhoppu arranged the meals for all his friends,
outside his house. Banana puddings, almond cake,
coconut and raisin rice were ready. His friends started
coming by 6 in the evening. Bhoppu gave detail
description of the hard work that he had put in
constructing his house.
Suddenly, it started raining. Bhoppu’s friends
started going into the house. Bhoppu kept shouting,
“Oh! Somebody help me please. All these dishes are
getting wet.”
Nobody heard him. At last, Bhoppu also had to
leave everything and go inside the house.

ooking outside from the window his friend, Peenu

L said, “It is raining here only. The rest of the place
is dry. Look outside, it is dry everywhere.”
Bhoppu was shocked. How can it rain only on his
house? He heard some noise from outside. He opened
the door and found Pusy, Neel and Rangu there. They
were enjoying the tasty food laid outside.
Rangu looked at Bhoppu and said, “Bhoppu, it
tastes good. You forgot to call us for the party. But
look, we have come here on our own. After all, we put
so much labour to build this house.”
Bhoppu was ashamed. He understood that it was
not raining, but it was the mischief of Pusy, Neel and
Rangu. Before he could say anything, they finished
the food and left the place.
Bhoppu’s other friends came out. The rain had
stopped but all the containers were empty. They all
taunted Bhoppu and went back home.
Finally, Bhoppu understood what true friendship
is.

Happy Days Are Back

ISNEY AND Pogo,
were Rosy’s two
children. They were
very notorious though they
were just four months old.
However even in this short
time, they had become
everyone’s favourite in the
whole street. Young and old,
everyone was their fan and
fulfilled their wishes.
Some would give them
toffees and chocolates, others
gave them biscuits, some gave
them pancakes, etc., all of them
fed them with something or the
other.
Disney was balck and white
in colour, while Pogo was
mustard and white. Both of
them were very cute.
They would play with small
children all day long and
entertain them.
Everyone knew Rosy’s

family and the two were hot favourites among
children.
The children made a separate house for them in the
street garden.
Pogo and Disney lived there, along with their
mother.
They would entertain everyone around them. The
whole street looked empty, whenever they remained
inside their house for the whole day.
Everything was fine, till the day when Rosy bit
Guptaji’s relative.
Rosy bit him because he was throwing stones at
Pogo and Disney.
Actually, Pogo and Disney loved everyone there.
They would even lick their feet.

herefore, they did the same with Guptaji’s relative

T but he mistook their affection and tried to get
away from the two by throwing stones at them.
Fortunately the stones did not hit either of the two.
Rosy was watching everything. She went and
caught hold of his leg in her mouth. He tried to hit
Rosy but could not do so.
Somehow, he reached Guptaji’s house and told
him about the whole incident. Guptaji was furious.
He immediately lodged a complaint with the
organization, for street animals.
In the afternoon, an ambulance from the same
organization came to their locality. They had huge
nets, which they spread all over the roads.
Most of the dogs of the locality got to know about
them beforehand, and hid.
Rosy, Disney and Pogo were looking for some

foot got stuck in the web.
Pogo got so scared that he started crying on seeing
his brother and mother trapped. But he left when Rosy
ordered him to run from there.
The people of the organization also caught some
other dogs and cats of the locality and took them to the
hospital. The street was desolate after Rosy and
Disney left.
Pogo was so depressed, that he even stopped
eating food.

He would sit silently in the garden throughout the
day.
Within two three days, he became weak and
looked feeble.
After all, his mother and brother were taken away
from him.
Days passed. Suddenly a ‘kuku’ sound was heard
in the street.
When 10 year old, Jatin, came to the balcony, he
was amazed. He went inside and brought his mother
to the balcony.
He pointed his small fingers and showed Disney
and Rosy to his mother.

atin’s mother was very happy to see Rosy’s family

J together once again. Pogo’s happiness knew no
bounds when he saw his mother and brother back. He
kept jumping all over the street to show his
excitement to everyone.
Actually, the organization caught the street
animals and took them to their hospital. There they
were given treatment, if they were suffering from
some ailment or given proper vaccinations and then
dropped in the same place from where they had been
taken.
That day, the van of the organization dropped
Rosy and Disney after they had been properly
vaccinated and injected for anti-rabies. Then they put
a small cut on their ear to mark that they had been
vaccinated.
Rosy’s family was together again. Even though it
was unintentional, Guptaji had done a wonderful job
for the dogs.

A Fat Rat
T
HERE WAS a fat mice, named Thulthuli. Since
summers were approaching, she started
looking for a hole near the river bank. She was
quite lazy. ‘I will not have to go far to drink water, if
I live near the river.’
There were some trees on the bank. She started
looking for holes in them. But did not find, any place
good enough to live in. Disappointed she sat under a
tree. Chanchal Mynah was sitting on the banyan tree.
She came to her and asked, “Sister Mice, what is the
matter? Why are you worried?”
Thulthuli answered, “I need a hole to live in.”
Chanchal replied, “I know about a
good place, where you can live. But
the soil is coarse and stony. You
cannot shape it as you like.”
Thulthuli said, “First,
show me the place.”
Chanchal showed her
the hole in the ground.
Thulthuli went inside
it and came out. She
said, “It is a bit
cramped, but, I
think, I will

there.
Thulthuli got a good quantity of grain when the
farmers cut their wheat. She would carry the grain to
her hole the whole day.
When her hole filled up with the grain, she
thought, ‘Now I can live happily. I can lie back all day
long and enjoy the food. Now I need not step out of
the house for food.”
The river flowed close by, therefore Thulthuli
built a channel, to bring the
water from the river to the
mouth of the pit. This made
it convenient for her to
drink water. She thought,
‘Wow! I think these are
the best days of my life’.
Thulthuli’s physical
activities decreased
and in a few days, she
became fat. She had

One day, the grains finished. She thought, ‘Now, I

Please take me out.”
Chanchal asked, “How did it happen?”
Thulthuli replied, “The pit has become small. Ask
the farmer to get his tools and break open this pit.”
Chanchal replied, “Do not even think about it. If
he struck the pit with great force, you would die and it
would become your grave.”
Thulthuli said, “Then ask someone to pour oil in
the pit. My body would get oily and I will slip easily
out of the pit.”
Chanchal said, “This will not work. Even then you
might die if too much oil gets into the pit.”
Thulthuli said, “Then, go and get a rope. I will tie
it around my neck and you pull me out.”
“How can I murder you? Tell me how will you tie
the rope? Can you move your limbs work in this
position?”
Thulthuli lost all hope, she asked in desperation,
“What should I do now?”
Chanchal said, “Be calm. I will think of some way.”

Chanchal went back home and Thulthuli cursed
her for her indifference.
Chanchal did not come to meet her again, that day.
Next morning she asked, “Sister, are you alive?”

hulthuli was very distressed. She said, “Your

still you ask me these questions. I will not leave you,
once I come out.”
Chanchal started laughing. She said, “You are
stuck. You cannot do anything.”
Thulthuli became red with anger. She said,
“Okay…wait and watch.”
She tried hard to push herself out. Next moment,
she was out of the pit. She ran to catch hold of
Chanchal.
Chanchal said, “Think before you come after me.
Look you are finally out. And also think how you
came out.”
Thulthuli said, “Oh yes! I am, finally, out of my pit.”
Chanchal said, “You have come out because of my
plan.”
Thulthuli asked, “What have you done? You left
me starving, right?”
Chanchal said, “Yes, that’s it. Your hunger actually
helped me. You became weak day-by-day and then, I
irritated you, so that you tried to come out and catch
me. Now, tell me, am I your sister or not?”
Thulthuli was ashamed. She had tears in her eyes,
“You are very nice, Chanchal. Now, I will never repeat
this mistake. I will shun my lazy habits and will go for

ARLY IN the morning an airplane rumbled in
the sky in Mangalvan and the young birds and
animals started jumping in excitement. They
shouted, “Here comes… here she comes… the queen
of Champakvan.
Champakvan’s Queen was also happy to see the
young birds and animals. She said to the king, “Look
at the children, how cute, you carry on with your
work, while, I dance with them.”
“All right, let the airplane land,” King of
Champakvan, Balvan Singh said, “I hope you will not
jump down in excitement.”
“You always make fun of me. Wave your hand
once, to demonstrate your love for these young ones,”
requested the Queen, Priya.

Queen of Champakvan
“Oh, you will not let me sit for a moment till I
wave my hand. Look…” the king said as he waved his
hand.
“Look, the children are so happy now,” the Queen
said.
“Really, their enthusiasm is noteworthy. Their
affection is not at all pretentious. The children are
honest at heart. I will take some time off to meet
them,” the King said.
After sometime, the plane, landed. Minister,
authorities and Maharani Sita were there, along with
Mangalvan’s King, Maharaja Sher Singh, to welcome
the guests at the airport.
Champakvan’s King and Queen were received by

all the honourable people and were warmly
welcomed. The two Queens hugged each other.
After that Champakvan’s Queen started walking
towards the young animals and birds. The king met
the authorities and their families. The Queen became
emotional at the sight of all the innocent and cute
children.
The children also met her the same way. It seemed as
if a mother was meeting her children after a long time.
“I will like to meet all the children, who cannot
meet me due to security reasons. They will be
disappointed if I did not meet them,” said the Queen
of Champakvan, while coming out of the airport.
“Do not worry about it. Thousands of young birds
and animals have been called to the Palace. I knew
that you love children, that is why I took the care of
calling each one to our palace, so that they can meet
you. Even I love them very much,” said Sita.
Queen Priya was excited to hear this and said, “I
think all the people are kind and soft in nature here,
because they have such a queen, who takes good care
of them.”
The two Queens kept discussing obout the
children. Then, the car left for the palace. They noticed
the enthusiasm and excitement of the inhabitants of
Mangalvan, on the way.
When they reached the palace, they found
thousands of birds and animals, who were waiting to
welcome them with garlands.
The Queen was delighted to see so many children.
They requested her to dance with them for sometime.
She said, “We will be here for three days. You are also
our guest here for these three days. We all will dance
together in the evening. Right now, we should take
some rest.”
In the evening, the two kings, ministers and chief
minister got engrossed in the meeting, discussing
various issues.
Both the Queens went to see the children. They
followed the whole schedule of the program, which
included story telling, speech of the Queens, sharing
riddles and jokes. The children were very happy as
they had a chance to entertain both the queens with

their jokes. The Queens also had fun and they gave
lesson on determinism, enthusiasm and self
confidence to the children in their own way.
Champakvan’s Queen, Priya said, “I never thought
about becoming a Queen. But I made my mind and
worked hard to reach this stage. Hard work is all it
takes to attain one’s goals. Children, whatever big
issue comes, never lose your self-confidence. One
should never lose hope even after facing
disappointing failure. Instead, one should work
harder to correct his mistakes. We are proud of you.
Live long happily.”
The crowd of children was enthusiastic after this
speech. After that, music was played and they all
danced. They danced on famous bollywood songs till
late in the night.
Next day, their plan was to go for a picnic. Many
busses were hired for the day. They roamed around
sung songs and danced for some time. The king also
danced with them.
He also spent time with the children and recalled
his childhood memories. They felt rejuvenated after
the meeting with the children.
The third day they distributed gifts to each child
and bade them goodbye.
That day, the Queen of Champakvan and the
children were sad. Queen Priya had become

emotionally attached to these children. She did not
want to leave them and go. She gave expensive gifts
and books to the children.
The children were happy, but soon they became sad
as the Queen was about to leave. They said, “We would
never let you down and will fulfill your expectations.
You also promise us that you will come back soon.”
“Yes, my children. I will come soon. But next time,
I will also check your mark-sheets to see your
performance,” said Queen Priya with a smile.
The children left. After sometime, Priya also flew
with the king, taking back all the sweet memories of
the trip. On the way, she talked about the children
with the king. Here, the children discussed the Queen
of Champakvan.
They worked hard to score good marks, so that
they could fulfill the Queen’s expectations. Their
parents and teachers were extremely happy to see
them working so hard.
They said, “The Queen of Champakvan is great. We
are grateful she gave such an important lesson to these
children, which will be helpful to them in their entire
life. We would never let this enthusiasm fade away.”

A Lovely Birthday Gift
by Priti Kumari

M
INI AND Rini were twins. They
loved each other very much but
they fought a lot. Both their
parents worried when they saw them fight.
They would always purchase the same
thing for both of them.
Even then, the sisters fought a lot.
March (First) 2011 41
They always preferred the other person’s things.
Their birthday was approaching and they were
quite excited about it. They planned many things for
the special day. The parents decided to buy many
presents for them.
Mini said to Rini, “Rini, your complexion is dark.
Therefore people will not look at you, they will only
admire me as I am more beautiful. Hence, you give me
your red frock; I will wear that on our birthday.”
This angered Rini. She thought if she had a fair
complexion, she would have looked as beautiful as
her sister. People would have admired her and given

42 Champak
her nice gifts. But now, she had to part with her best
belongings for her sister. She loved her red frock,
which she handed over to Mini.
Mini was extremely happy to get the frock. Their
mother ordered a nice cake for both of them, on their
birthday. Mini wore Rini’s red frock. She was
showing off her nice red dress to her friends, who
looked and admired her.
Rini wore her old frock and came out of the room.
All their friends started laughing at her.
One of their friends said, “Oh Rini! Why are you
wearing such an ugly dress?”
Another said, “Even if she would have worn a nice
dress, she would have looked the same. Look at Mini.
She is so good looking.”
Rini started crying when she heard this. But she
knew that if Mummy would see her crying, she would
scold Rini for this. She calmed down and wiped her
tears and came to the table to cut the cake.
Mummy had decorated the table, on which the
cake was placed.

The cake was in the centre of the table, with

beautiful shiny candles. Mummy had festooned the
whole room with balloons.
Rini thought that Mini would fight with her if she
cuts the cake first. So she said, “Mini, you cut the cake
first. I will cut it after you.”
Mini was excited. She came to the table to blow the
candles and then, cut the cake. Everyone sang “Happy
Birthday to you…”
Suddenly, Rini noticed that a lighted candle had
fallen from the table, and set the table cloth on fire.
March (First) 2011 43
Now the fire was spreading and Rini’s frock was
about to come into contact with it.
Mini was busy cutting the cake and everyone was
singing the birthday song.
Rini was frightened. She wondered what would
happen if Mini’s frock caught fire. She ran to Mini,
pushed her aside; pulled the table cloth and threw it
on the floor.
By then, the whole table cloth was aflame. She put
the carpet on the table cloth. Everyone was amazed to
see this. They came forward to help her.

ummy and Papa requested all the children to

M assemble in the garden.
Everyone was scared after this incident. Mummy
pacified them. Mini was so scared that she held on to
her mother tightly.
She knew the fire would have burnt her if Rini had
not saved her. Tears rolled down her cheeks when she
thought of it.
Then, she remembered the time when she had
insulted her sister in front of others and made fun of
her.
Even after all that Rini had saved her life. Actually
Rini was more beautiful than her sister for she was
blessed with inner beauty.
She had given Mini the best gift by saving her life.
Mini ran to her sister, who was standing quietly in
one corner, and said, “Rini, you are so sweet and
beautiful. Please forgive me for my misbehaviour. I
will never repeat it.”
Rini started crying at the change in her sister. This
was the best present for her too on her birthday.

saree everyday.
White on Monday, Red on Tuesday, Green on
Wednesday, Yellow on Thursday, Blue on Friday,
White on Saturday, Orange or Yellow on Sunday. This
pink saree is of no use to me.”
“That means, you do not wear any other colour

that day, everything is favourable for you. Did you
notice that even though we were late to get out of the

“That is all right, Aunt. But there could be some
other reason for that.”
“You children do not believe easily,” said Tina as
she picked up the packet of saree and moved out of
the shop.”
“Oh! Aunt, look at that poster. Maharaj Sher sign

Tina was famous for cooking good food in the

“Definitely, I will make malai-koffta. Do you

Next day, Tina was ironing her saree. The
vegetable vender shouted from outside and she went
out to buy the vegetables for the competition.
“Aunt, is something burning?” asked Tinki as she
entered the house. Tina ran inside the room.
“Oh! My saree… I had to wear this to the food
fair,” said Tina inspecting the saree.
“Do not worry, Aunt, you can wear some other
saree. Try that new one, if you like.”
“No, Tinki I have to wear a green saree. I cook
well, but today it is risky in this. Today is Wednesday
and it is good to wear green on Wednesday. I will win
only if I wear a green saree. Let us go and buy a green
saree from the market.”
“But Aunt, you have to make arrangements for the
competition as well. We will be late if you went
shopping now.”
“I will come back soon. It is only 11:00 am just
now.”
Tina took the purse and rushed to the market. She
was back by 12 o’clock.
“Everything is falling apart today for I am wearing
this blue saree. First I missed the bus then I had to
wait for a taxi.
But now everything will fall back into place. I have
even got a green coloured plate to serve food to
Maharaj Sher Singh.”

ina wore her new green saree and started putting

T all the spices and vegetables in the containers. Just
then, the phone rang, it was Tina’s friend, Minmin
Squirrel.
“Tina, what will you cook today? I will make aloo-
matar. It is you who will get the first prize. Lets see, if
I can get the second or the third prize…”
“I will make malai-kofta. You put some matar-
aloo, it will taste even better.”
They started talking on the phone and kept talking
for quite some time.
Tinki said, “Aunt, you have to arrange everything
now and have to make preparations for the
competition.
We will take at least half an hour to reach the food
fair and then you have to put all your things there
too.”
Tina said all the best to Minmin and put the phone
down. She took a big basket with all the ingredients
in it and reached the food fair.
March (First) 2011 53
As soon as the bell rang, everyone started
preparing their dishes.
Tina cut the onions and put them to cook and got
busy in cutting other vegetables. But she could not
find the box of spices anywhere.
“Oh! It seems I have left the box at home in hurry.
Now, I can’t even send anyone to get it from home.”
She asked from other the participants to lend her
some, but they refused to give for they had brought
only a small quantity .
After a long wait, she at last got some left-overs.
But by then the onions got burnt. She quickly cut the
onions again. But the burnt onion stuck to the
cooking-pan. So, it emitted a burnt smell and
produced a lot of smoke.
‘There is no time left to buy the onions, I have to
add the spices. I can’t understand anything. I’m
getting confused,’ she somehow made the dish.
Maharaja reached the food fair.

e came straight to Tina’s table. He tasted the

H dish and made an expression of loathing. He
spitted it out.
“Disgusting… what have you made?”
He tasted all the dishes and gave the first prize to
Minmin. Tina did not get any prize.
“You cook the best food in the whole forest; even
then you lost the competition. That is because you
concentrate more on colour than on your preparations.
Had you done it otherwise, you would have got the
first prize,” said Tinki.
“You are right, I will no longer trust this colour-
scheme and will focus on my work,” said Tina.

A Kind Heart by Shristi Seth

A
ASTHA ALWAYS complained, “Mummy,
Driver Uncle never stops the bus.

He always scolds me but never says a word to other

students. He even asks me to sit with the small
children; due to it my uniform gets dirty.”
“Driver Uncle gets the bus in front of the house
exclusively for you. He even waits for you when you
get late. Doesn’t he?” Mummy asked.
Aastha nodded and agreed to what her mother
said.
Her school bus would pick the students from the
colony and then take the route, from the main road, to
the school.
Whenever Aastha was late for school, she would
rush to the other end of the colony to catch the bus.
Once she forgot to take her water bottle, her
mother hurried to the other part of the colony and
gave her the bottle.
One day, while boarding the bus, Aastha
remembered, that she had forgotten her chart on the
study table.
She had prepared the chart just a day before and
forgot to pick it up from the table.
She was very worried. As soon as the bus reached
the other part of the colony, she went to the front gate
of the bus and said, “Driver Uncle, just wait for two
minutes,” and rushed back to her house. Driver Uncle
58 Champak
did not understand anything.
Aastha reached home, entered her room, picked
the chart, from the study table, and ran back to the
bus.
Mummy could not comprehend from where she
came and where she went.
But, after a few minutes, she came back
complaining once again, “Mummy, the bus has gone.
I missed it.”
“Why do you think, it would wait for you?” said
Mummy.
“Finally, Driver Uncle has to drop all the students
at school at the right time. You should have kept track
of the time,” said Mummy.
Mummy started her scooty and asked Aastha to sit
at the back. They chased the bus.
“Mummy, Driver Uncle could have waited for
me,” said Aastha, sitting at the back of the scooty.
“No, it was not his mistake,” Mummy did not want
to scold Aastha in the morning.
One day, Aastha was not feeling well. But she had
to sit for an exam that day, so, it was important for her
to reach school on time. Mummy made a cup of ginger
tea for her.
She gave her medicines and a water bottle and
somehow made her sit in the bus.
The bus was just half way, when Aastha started
puking. Aastha did not understand how to control it;
she placed her hand over her mouth. But both her
hands and her uniform got dirty.
Prakriti and Gauri informed Driver Uncle about it.
Driver Uncle turned his face and saw that Aastha was
really unwell.
He parked the bus on the side of the road. He

RAMENDRA NATH
brought his water bottle and a clean cloth for her to
wipe her hands and uniform.
Driver Uncle also gave her a sweet and sour candy,
which made her feel better. That day, Driver Uncle
was not in a hurry. He asked Aastha if she was feeling
better.
By then Aastha felt better. Driver Uncle started the
bus. Driver Uncle drove the bus in high speed and
reached the school on time.
Aastha appeared for her English test. She thought,
“Driver Uncle is a very nice man. But she could not
thank him for helping her.”
As soon as she was home she told everything to
her mother and requested her to thank him. Her
mother smiled for she too wanted to thank him for
the same.

Chunki's
Nest
by Dr. Tara Nigam
T
HE SPARROW felt the need to make a nest for
herself, as the monsoon was near. But Chunki
was not sure about the place where she could
make a nice nest.
She was sitting and contemplating on this
problem. She was confused whether to choose the
sacred fig tree, evergreen mahogany tree or ziayphus
tree.
Her mind veered in confusion. Even after
contemplating for a long time, she could not reach a
conclusion.
Finally she thought of going to the trees and asking
them.
She thought, ‘Whichever tree offers me to live on
it, I will make my home there.’
She immediately flew towards the fig tree, sat on it
and whispered, “Brother Fig, can I make a nest on
your branch?”
“No. Do not even try to do that. Look there, a crew
of crows resides on that branch of mine. Crows are
your enemies; they will not let you live in peace, if you
come to live here. Better search another tree to make
your nest.”
“Thank you, I must leave now. I think I should ask
the mango tree. He would give me a nice branch to
make a nest.” Chuinki flew directly to the mango tree
and said, “Hey! Brother mango, I have come here to
make a nest on your branch. Will it be alright if I did
that?”
“On my branch?” asked the tree in surprise.
“Yes.”
“But there is no space. A parrot resides inside the
hole of my trunk and his friends sit on my branches
the whole day. Moreover, these orchid plants have
filled all the space on me.”
Chunki said, “Alright. I would leave now. She
reached the acacia tree and asked the same question.
He replied, “Chunki, I personally do not have any
objection. But Baya has gone just now saying that she

SANJAY
will make 4-5 nests on my
branches. You must be aware
of the fact that she makes her
nest only on thorny trees. So
you have to decide where you
should make your nest.”
Chunki thanked him and
flew towards the rosewood tree
and asked if she could make her
nest there.
Before rosewood could answer her question, an
owl came out from the tree hole and said, “Get lost
from here. Can’t you find any other tree to make your
nest? I live here with my whole family.”
Scared Chunki flew away from there. She was
disappointed to receive this kind of response from all
the trees.
She lost all hope and decided not to go anywhere.
She kept on flying. A crow noticed her and started
pursuing her.
Chunki was scared and tried to hide under a
window pane of a house. When the crow followed her,
the owner of the house did not allow the crow to stay
there.
Now Chunki felt safe and secure. That very
moment, she decided to make her nest under the
window of the house.
She started collecting pieces to make her nest and
worked hard for some time. Finally she made a nice
nest for herself.
From that day onwards, all the sparrows started
making their nests outside the houses, under the
window panes.

Secret Revealed
by Chandraprabha Swarup

T
HERE WERE many mango trees in
Champakvan that produced very juicy and
delicious mangoes.
Every year the animals waited for the summer
season to enjoy the ripe mangoes. Every food seemed
tasteless compared to these sweet and juicy mangoes.
They ate only mangoes for every meal and lled their
stomachs with them, There was one special mango

tree, at some distance from all the others. It was

special because it was the biggest tree that produced
the most juicy and biggest mangoes.
Not every animal of the forest was aware of this
fact, but Cheeku Monkey discovered it while playing
in the forest. His mouth watered when he found the
big tree, laden with delicious mangoes. He had never
tasted such luscious mangoes before. He ate until his
stomach lled.
Next day, when his friends inquired why he had
not come to eat mangoes he replied that he was ill.
But, as soon as his friends left, he rushed to the big
tree to eat the mangoes alone.
This became his daily routine. Every day he would
pretend to be ill and take medicines from Pampu
Jackal and then rush to his favourite tree as soon

as he was alone.
After a few days, some animals started doubting
him. They thought it would be good to check
thoroughly what ailed him that he did not eat any
mangoes with his friends.
Gillu Squirrel was deputed by all to nd out the
truth for she lived on the same tree, as Cheeku.

ext day, Gillu went to Cheeku’s house to ask

N about his health. She was amazed to see the
house. Cheeku was not there and the medicines,
which he had taken from Pampu, lay scattered in the
whole room.
She informed everyone about this. All the animals
gathered and planned to nd out the truth. Jumpy
Monkey was supposed to chase Cheeku. Jumpy found
that Cheeku went to a special tree regularly and
enjoyed the tasty mangoes alone.
Next day, Cheeku was shocked when he reached
the special mango tree.
He was surprised to see so many mango kernels
and skins lying around the tree. He could not gure
out the reason behind it. He was thinking about it,
when suddenly everyone came out laughing from
behind the bushes.
Cheeku was ashamed for now he knew that his
secret was out.
Maharaja Sher Singh then came and told him,
“There is no fun to enjoy your food alone. One should
always share.”
Cheeku understood that lesson and after that day,
everyone enjoyed eating juicy mangoes together from
that tree.

NAKY SNAKE
was fed up
eating frogs Omelet

and rats every day.
One day he saw a
nest of a bird while

Eggs
sitting on a mango
tree.
It had three eggs.
He looked around
but saw no one there.
Snaky smiled by Manoj Rai
cunningly.
“Today I will
enjoy eating tasty
omelets,” he uttered
as he glided towards
the nest.
“Stop! Don’t you
dare touch those
eggs.” Snaky turned
and saw Sony
squirrel glaring at
him. “Look Snaky, I
am your friend,
which is why I am
telling you it is bad to steal eggs. You will land up into
big trouble one day.”
“Hiss… Hiss…You mind your own business,
otherwise I will swallow you, along with these eggs,”
said Snaky and slid towards her.
Sony climbed the tree swiftly while the pigeon
watched her, sitting on the branch of the tree.
Snaky took the eggs carefully and went into his
hole and did not come out of it for three full days. He
enjoyed the delicious eggs, which he had obtained for
free.
For a few days Snaky kept searching for eggs.
Whenever he found eggs, there was always someone
looking after them.
This went on for a week and he had to feed on
small insects
and flies. At the
mere thought
of an egg his
mouth started
watering.
One day he
got up early in
the morning.
He was very
hungry but
could not find anything to eat.
He went to the dense forest to look for some
food.
However, even there, he found only flies and rats.
This made him very unhappy.
He saw a huge tree in front of him. “There might
be an egg in one of the nest’s,” thought Snaky and
started climbing the tree. He was unaware that Sony
was following him.
Snaky was amazed to see a large nest in the middle
of the tree.
“Wow! What a big nest! There may be some eggs in
it.” Soon he was near the nest and saw two large eggs
there.
He had never seen such huge eggs in his life. He
was extremely happy.
“Listen Snaky, go back. Such huge eggs must
belong to a large bird.” Snaky was disconcerted to
hear Sony. “You are here, get lost otherwise you will
repent.”
Sony said, “Look, these huge eggs may belong to
an elephant. He will
walk over you and
you will die.”
“Ha… Ha…
neither do elephants
lay eggs nor do they
make nests on trees,”
said Snaky as he
laughed at Sony.
Sony again tried to
stop him, “Then these
eggs must be of a
crocodile. I have heard PRABHAT

that there are several

crocodiles in this
forest.”
“May be you are
right but crocodile do
not lay eggs on trees,”
said Snaky as he reached the nest.
“Look, pleases listen to me. These eggs may be of
an ostrich.
Ostrich is quite big in size and is the fastest bird.
He will not leave you if he catches you.”
Snaky went red with anger for he was in no mood
to stop and listen to what Sony said. He slithered
towards Sony, but she escaped and climbed to the top
most branch of the tree. Snaky again shifted his focus
onto the eggs.
He was about to lick the huge eggs, when suddenly
he heard a voice from behind, “Do not even dare to
touch my eggs.”
Snaky turned and saw a huge bird behind him. He
went numb with fear and tried to slide away from
there.
But the eagle caught hold of him in his claws and
Snaky started bleeding. He tried to escape and fell
from the tree.
He was badly hurt for he had fallen from a great
height.
“You will not go alive from here, if you are ever
seen in this area,” said the eagle as he scooped from
the top of the tree to catch him.
Snaky was so scared that he dashed away from
there and swore never to steal eggs again.
