True Friendship
E
VERYONE IN the whole Champakvan loved
Pinku Deer. He was mischievous, notorious but
also helpful. He was very intelligent and
always stood first in his class.
One day, Pinku stepped out of the house and
reached the city alone. When he reached the city he
felt nervous. There were too many people. Wherever
4 Champak
he went, he found a crowd of
people. Several cars were on
the roads.
There were some
showrooms at the other side of
the road therefore; he tried to
cross the road in order to have a
look at them. Since he was
unaware of the traffic rules and
regulations, he was hit by a car,
coming from the opposite side
while he crossed the road.
Chintu Jackal saw him
being hit. He immediately
noted down the number of the
car and then, rushed to Pinku
in order to help him. The car
had crushed Pinku’s legs and
sped away. Pinku lost
consciousness due to excessive
loss of blood.
Chintu Jackal narrated the
whole incident to the traffic
policeman, Hira Bear. Hira Bear
called the ambulance. He took
the number of the car from
Chintu and asked his co-
workers, on the walky-talky to
catch the car with that number.
Soon the ambulance came
and after helping the wards to
settle Pinku in the ambulance,
Chintu too got into it.
March (First) 2011 5
Doctor Golu Elephant admitted him immediately.
He inspected Pinku and said, “Look, the car has
crushed both his legs badly. He has even lost a lot of
blood. I am trying my best but there is a possibility
that he might lose his legs forever.”
On hearing this Chintu became very worried. He
said, “Doctor, I do not even know him. Whom should
I inform?”
“This is what I found in his pocket. I think there is
a note on which his residential address is written.
Please call someone from his family immediately for I
can operate only after that,” said Golu Doctor.

UNTY MONKEY, along with his younger
brother, Buntu, was returning home from his
friend’s house. Bunty was riding the bicycle
and Buntu was sitting on the carrier.
“Brother, hurry up and ride home quickly. The
road is isolated and it is going to be dark soon. I am
quite scared.”
“Do not be scared, Buntu. We will reach the market
area in just five minutes,” said Bunty as he rode the
cycle in speed.
Just then, two people came in front of them and
stopped their bicycle. Their faces were hidden.
“Leave this cycle here and run away otherwise you
will be in trouble,” threatened one of them, whose
face was hidden with a black cloth.
“This is our cycle. We will not give this to you,”
replied Buntu.
“Do you want to live or not?” said the person,
whose face was hidden in a red cloth. He even took
out a knife from his pocket.
“You be quiet, Buntu,” said Bunty, as he was
scared his brother would get hurt by the knife.
“He is right. Now, empty your pockets for you
cannot imagine what we can do to both of you,” said
one of the robbers.
March (First) 2011 9
“Wait, let me check them and find out what all
they have in their pockets,” said the person, whose
face was hidden in the red cloth. Then, he started
checking Bunty and Buntu.
“They have only Rs.20 and three to four toffees in
their pockets.”
“Keep this with you,” said one of them laughing.
“Are you carrying anything else, like watch,
mobile phone, etc.?
“No. we have only books,” said Bunty as he
showed the books to the robbers.
“Ho…ho…ho… these books are of no use to us.
Now, you leave the cycle here and go home. Do not
turn back otherwise…” threatened the person who
was hiding his identity in the red cloth, brandishing
the knife in front of them.
“We will leave,” said Bunty and threw the books
intentionally near the cycle tyre.
“Pick your books quickly and leave from here at
once.”
PRABHAT
“Sattu, look there, police!”
“Lalu, what are we afraid of? How will they come
to know that we have robbed this cycle?” asked Sattu,
and Lalu smiled.
Lalu and Sattu were crossing the police, when
suddenly both the brothers, who had been following
them, started shouting, “Thief! Thief! Catch hold of
them… They are running away with our cycle.”
Lalu and Sattu took fright when their secret was
revealed in front of the police. Even before they could
think about running from there, they were caught by
the police.
Bunty and Buntu narrated the whole incident to
the police and Lalu and Sattu were arrested. The
brothers got Rs.20 along with their cycle.
“Well done kids! Your alertness and presence of
mind saved your cycle today. The two robbers also got
arrested because of that,” said inspector Tendu.
“But, we lost our toffees. They ate all of them,”
said Buntu pointing the robbers. At this, the police
inspector and Bunty started laughing.

A Dirty
Trick
Pusy immediately replied, “I am coming right
now, friend. Stop crying. I will take you to the
hospital.”
Pusy took his cycle to reach the old tree. Bhoppu
and Pusy had studied together in school. But Bhoppu
stopped studying in the middle of the session. Pusy’s
other friends told him that Bhoppu was sitting idle at
home and did not do anything.
Pusy reached the tree and called out his name,
“Bhoppu… Bhoppu… Where are you?”
He did not hear any response. Pusy noticed a pit
under the tree. Is Bhoppu inside it? Pusy called
Bhoppu on his mobile phone, but it was switched off.
He took a spade, lying near the tree and started
digging the earth. He dug the earth but could not find
his friend. He rang his friends, Rangu Monkey and
Neel Monkey, and asked them to come there. The
three started looking for Bhoppu. Pusy thought that
Bhoppu must have fallen in the mud. With the help of
Rangu and Neel, Pusy dug the whole place around the
tree.
SUSHIL
After 2 hours, when all the friends
got tired and sat under the tree, they
heard Bhoppu’s laughter from the tree
above. Pusy looked at him in surprise,
“Bhoppu, you are sitting on the tree?
You were watching me while I was
looking for you. You saw how worried I
was. We dug the whole place around
the tree and you…”
“This is it. Friend! I was not able to
dig this place alone. I thought about an
idea of making someone else do this
work for me. If I would have called you
for help, you would have made some
excuse. That is why I called you up and
said that I was stuck in the pit, and see…my work is
done.”
Pusy got angry at this. He said, “This is cheating,
Bhoppu. If you would have called me, I would have
come to help you. But you did not do the right thing
by lying to me, Bhoppu.”
Bhoppu said carelessly, “Oh Pusy! This much
deceit is allowed in friendship. What is there to get
annoyed at?”
Pusy, Rangu and Neel, all the three friends were
very angry over this prank. Neel wanted to give a
blow to Bhoppu for his behaviour, but Pusy stopped
him, “Neel, we will teach him a good lesson by giving
him the same dose.”
Bhoppu’s house was ready now. He thought of
inviting his friends to his house for a party. Pusy got
the news that Bhoppu was throwing a party for his
friends. He quickly went to see Rangu and Neel.
March (First) 2011 19
Bhoppu arranged the meals for all his friends,
outside his house. Banana puddings, almond cake,
coconut and raisin rice were ready. His friends started
coming by 6 in the evening. Bhoppu gave detail
description of the hard work that he had put in
constructing his house.
Suddenly, it started raining. Bhoppu’s friends
started going into the house. Bhoppu kept shouting,
“Oh! Somebody help me please. All these dishes are
getting wet.”
Nobody heard him. At last, Bhoppu also had to
leave everything and go inside the house.

ISNEY AND Pogo,
were Rosy’s two
children. They were
very notorious though they
were just four months old.
However even in this short
time, they had become
everyone’s favourite in the
whole street. Young and old,
everyone was their fan and
fulfilled their wishes.
Some would give them
toffees and chocolates, others
gave them biscuits, some gave
them pancakes, etc., all of them
fed them with something or the
other.
Disney was balck and white
in colour, while Pogo was
mustard and white. Both of
them were very cute.
They would play with small
children all day long and
entertain them.
Everyone knew Rosy’s
March (First) 2011 21
family and the two were hot favourites among
children.
The children made a separate house for them in the
street garden.
Pogo and Disney lived there, along with their
mother.
They would entertain everyone around them. The
whole street looked empty, whenever they remained
inside their house for the whole day.
Everything was fine, till the day when Rosy bit
Guptaji’s relative.
Rosy bit him because he was throwing stones at
Pogo and Disney.
Actually, Pogo and Disney loved everyone there.
They would even lick their feet.
MD. ALI
He would sit silently in the garden throughout the
day.
Within two three days, he became weak and
looked feeble.
After all, his mother and brother were taken away
from him.
Days passed. Suddenly a ‘kuku’ sound was heard
in the street.
When 10 year old, Jatin, came to the balcony, he
was amazed. He went inside and brought his mother
to the balcony.
He pointed his small fingers and showed Disney
and Rosy to his mother.

Queen of Champakvan
“Oh, you will not let me sit for a moment till I
wave my hand. Look…” the king said as he waved his
hand.
“Look, the children are so happy now,” the Queen
said.
“Really, their enthusiasm is noteworthy. Their
affection is not at all pretentious. The children are
honest at heart. I will take some time off to meet
them,” the King said.
After sometime, the plane, landed. Minister,
authorities and Maharani Sita were there, along with
Mangalvan’s King, Maharaja Sher Singh, to welcome
the guests at the airport.
Champakvan’s King and Queen were received by
32 Champak
all the honourable people and were warmly
welcomed. The two Queens hugged each other.
After that Champakvan’s Queen started walking
towards the young animals and birds. The king met
the authorities and their families. The Queen became
emotional at the sight of all the innocent and cute
children.
The children also met her the same way. It seemed as
if a mother was meeting her children after a long time.
“I will like to meet all the children, who cannot
meet me due to security reasons. They will be
disappointed if I did not meet them,” said the Queen
of Champakvan, while coming out of the airport.
“Do not worry about it. Thousands of young birds
and animals have been called to the Palace. I knew
that you love children, that is why I took the care of
calling each one to our palace, so that they can meet
you. Even I love them very much,” said Sita.
Queen Priya was excited to hear this and said, “I
think all the people are kind and soft in nature here,
because they have such a queen, who takes good care
of them.”
The two Queens kept discussing obout the
children. Then, the car left for the palace. They noticed
the enthusiasm and excitement of the inhabitants of
Mangalvan, on the way.
When they reached the palace, they found
thousands of birds and animals, who were waiting to
welcome them with garlands.
The Queen was delighted to see so many children.
They requested her to dance with them for sometime.
She said, “We will be here for three days. You are also
our guest here for these three days. We all will dance
together in the evening. Right now, we should take
some rest.”
In the evening, the two kings, ministers and chief
minister got engrossed in the meeting, discussing
various issues.
Both the Queens went to see the children. They
followed the whole schedule of the program, which
included story telling, speech of the Queens, sharing
riddles and jokes. The children were very happy as
they had a chance to entertain both the queens with
RAMENDRA NATH
their jokes. The Queens also had fun and they gave
lesson on determinism, enthusiasm and self
confidence to the children in their own way.
Champakvan’s Queen, Priya said, “I never thought
about becoming a Queen. But I made my mind and
worked hard to reach this stage. Hard work is all it
takes to attain one’s goals. Children, whatever big
issue comes, never lose your self-confidence. One
should never lose hope even after facing
disappointing failure. Instead, one should work
harder to correct his mistakes. We are proud of you.
Live long happily.”
The crowd of children was enthusiastic after this
speech. After that, music was played and they all
danced. They danced on famous bollywood songs till
late in the night.
Next day, their plan was to go for a picnic. Many
busses were hired for the day. They roamed around
sung songs and danced for some time. The king also
danced with them.
He also spent time with the children and recalled
his childhood memories. They felt rejuvenated after
the meeting with the children.
The third day they distributed gifts to each child
and bade them goodbye.
That day, the Queen of Champakvan and the
children were sad. Queen Priya had become
March (First) 2011 35
emotionally attached to these children. She did not
want to leave them and go. She gave expensive gifts
and books to the children.
The children were happy, but soon they became sad
as the Queen was about to leave. They said, “We would
never let you down and will fulfill your expectations.
You also promise us that you will come back soon.”
“Yes, my children. I will come soon. But next time,
I will also check your mark-sheets to see your
performance,” said Queen Priya with a smile.
The children left. After sometime, Priya also flew
with the king, taking back all the sweet memories of
the trip. On the way, she talked about the children
with the king. Here, the children discussed the Queen
of Champakvan.
They worked hard to score good marks, so that
they could fulfill the Queen’s expectations. Their
parents and teachers were extremely happy to see
them working so hard.
They said, “The Queen of Champakvan is great. We
are grateful she gave such an important lesson to these
children, which will be helpful to them in their entire
life. We would never let this enthusiasm fade away.”

A Lovely Birthday Gift
by Priti Kumari
M
INI AND Rini were twins. They
loved each other very much but
they fought a lot. Both their
parents worried when they saw them fight.
They would always purchase the same
thing for both of them.
Even then, the sisters fought a lot.
March (First) 2011 41
They always preferred the other person’s things.
Their birthday was approaching and they were
quite excited about it. They planned many things for
the special day. The parents decided to buy many
presents for them.
Mini said to Rini, “Rini, your complexion is dark.
Therefore people will not look at you, they will only
admire me as I am more beautiful. Hence, you give me
your red frock; I will wear that on our birthday.”
This angered Rini. She thought if she had a fair
complexion, she would have looked as beautiful as
her sister. People would have admired her and given

her nice gifts. But now, she had to part with her best
belongings for her sister. She loved her red frock,
which she handed over to Mini.
Mini was extremely happy to get the frock. Their
mother ordered a nice cake for both of them, on their
birthday. Mini wore Rini’s red frock. She was
showing off her nice red dress to her friends, who
looked and admired her.
Rini wore her old frock and came out of the room.
All their friends started laughing at her.
One of their friends said, “Oh Rini! Why are you
wearing such an ugly dress?”
Another said, “Even if she would have worn a nice
dress, she would have looked the same. Look at Mini.
She is so good looking.”
Rini started crying when she heard this. But she
knew that if Mummy would see her crying, she would
scold Rini for this. She calmed down and wiped her
tears and came to the table to cut the cake.
Mummy had decorated the table, on which the
cake was placed.

Chunki's
Nest
by Dr. Tara Nigam
T
HE SPARROW felt the need to make a nest for
herself, as the monsoon was near. But Chunki
was not sure about the place where she could
make a nice nest.
She was sitting and contemplating on this
problem. She was confused whether to choose the
sacred fig tree, evergreen mahogany tree or ziayphus
tree.
Her mind veered in confusion. Even after
contemplating for a long time, she could not reach a
conclusion.
Finally she thought of going to the trees and asking
them.
She thought, ‘Whichever tree offers me to live on
it, I will make my home there.’
She immediately flew towards the fig tree, sat on it
and whispered, “Brother Fig, can I make a nest on
your branch?”
“No. Do not even try to do that. Look there, a crew
of crows resides on that branch of mine. Crows are
your enemies; they will not let you live in peace, if you
come to live here. Better search another tree to make
your nest.”
“Thank you, I must leave now. I think I should ask
the mango tree. He would give me a nice branch to
make a nest.” Chuinki flew directly to the mango tree
and said, “Hey! Brother mango, I have come here to
make a nest on your branch. Will it be alright if I did
that?”
“On my branch?” asked the tree in surprise.
“Yes.”
“But there is no space. A parrot resides inside the
hole of my trunk and his friends sit on my branches
the whole day. Moreover, these orchid plants have
filled all the space on me.”
Chunki said, “Alright. I would leave now. She
reached the acacia tree and asked the same question.
He replied, “Chunki, I personally do not have any
objection. But Baya has gone just now saying that she
SANJAY
will make 4-5 nests on my
branches. You must be aware
of the fact that she makes her
nest only on thorny trees. So
you have to decide where you
should make your nest.”
Chunki thanked him and
flew towards the rosewood tree
and asked if she could make her
nest there.
Before rosewood could answer her question, an
owl came out from the tree hole and said, “Get lost
from here. Can’t you find any other tree to make your
nest? I live here with my whole family.”
Scared Chunki flew away from there. She was
disappointed to receive this kind of response from all
the trees.
She lost all hope and decided not to go anywhere.
She kept on flying. A crow noticed her and started
pursuing her.
Chunki was scared and tried to hide under a
window pane of a house. When the crow followed her,
the owner of the house did not allow the crow to stay
there.
Now Chunki felt safe and secure. That very
moment, she decided to make her nest under the
window of the house.
She started collecting pieces to make her nest and
worked hard for some time. Finally she made a nice
nest for herself.
From that day onwards, all the sparrows started
making their nests outside the houses, under the
window panes.

tasteless compared to these sweet and juicy mangoes.
They ate only mangoes for every meal and lled their
stomachs with them, There was one special mango

sitting on a mango
tree.
It had three eggs.
He looked around
but saw no one there.
Snaky smiled by Manoj Rai
cunningly.
“Today I will
enjoy eating tasty
omelets,” he uttered
as he glided towards
the nest.
“Stop! Don’t you
dare touch those
eggs.” Snaky turned
and saw Sony
squirrel glaring at
him. “Look Snaky, I
am your friend,
which is why I am
telling you it is bad to steal eggs. You will land up into
big trouble one day.”
“Hiss… Hiss…You mind your own business,
otherwise I will swallow you, along with these eggs,”
said Snaky and slid towards her.
Sony climbed the tree swiftly while the pigeon
watched her, sitting on the branch of the tree.
Snaky took the eggs carefully and went into his
hole and did not come out of it for three full days. He
enjoyed the delicious eggs, which he had obtained for
free.
For a few days Snaky kept searching for eggs.
Whenever he found eggs, there was always someone
looking after them.
This went on for a week and he had to feed on
small insects
and flies. At the
mere thought
of an egg his
mouth started
watering.
One day he
got up early in
the morning.
He was very
hungry but
could not find anything to eat.
He went to the dense forest to look for some
food.
However, even there, he found only flies and rats.
This made him very unhappy.
He saw a huge tree in front of him. “There might
be an egg in one of the nest’s,” thought Snaky and
started climbing the tree. He was unaware that Sony
was following him.
Snaky was amazed to see a large nest in the middle
of the tree.
“Wow! What a big nest! There may be some eggs in
it.” Soon he was near the nest and saw two large eggs
there.
He had never seen such huge eggs in his life. He
was extremely happy.
“Listen Snaky, go back. Such huge eggs must
belong to a large bird.” Snaky was disconcerted to
hear Sony. “You are here, get lost otherwise you will
repent.”
Sony said, “Look, these huge eggs may belong to
an elephant. He will
walk over you and
you will die.”
“Ha… Ha…
neither do elephants
lay eggs nor do they
make nests on trees,”
said Snaky as he
laughed at Sony.
Sony again tried to
stop him, “Then these
eggs must be of a
crocodile. I have heard PRABHAT
