TOPIC: UNDERSTANDING THE GOD OF THE BIBLE – 1

INTRODUCTION -- This is the first in the series of the topic; Understanding the God of the Bible.
The topic is so wide that it cannot be served in just one session, so as you study remember that
there are many sides to this subject. This has been prayerfully prepared to aid our understanding
of our Heavenly Father; it is through such knowledge we come to the fullness of what God has
prepared for us in Christ Jesus, our Saviour and Redeemer [2Peter1:3-4].

DISCUSSION: Read each of the foundation texts and discuss what you understand by them and
what they tell you about God.

Foundation Text: Gen.1:1; Ps. 24:1; Gen.14:18-20; Ex.3:13-15; 1 Sam.12:22; Ps.103:8-13;

Ps.145:8-9; 2 Cor. 6:16-1

2.] GOD IS A FAITHFUL GOD

What does it mean that God is faithful? What are some of the great attributes of God? If the
Lord is not faithful, how would that affect the church and children of God? Read and discuss the
following passages: Lam.3:22-23; Gen. 26:1-5; Ex. 2:23-25; Jer. 33:19-21; 1Thess.5:22-24;
2Thess.3:1-3; Heb.10:23; 2Tim.2:13; 1John1:9

3.] AT ALL TIMES THE LORD HAS AN UNDERSTANDING OF HUMAN PROBLEMS

At every point in time the Lord has an understanding of whatever problems and crisis we go
through; that is why He chose to be, not only God to us, but a Father, too. Discuss how the
following texts display this understanding:

Ex.2:23-25; Ex.3:7-10; Mark 6:45-48; Matt.15:30-32; Luke 19:1-5; John 5:1-6

4.] GOD’S WILL IS ALWAYS TO DELIVER MAN FROM EVIL

Every move God makes towards man is for man’s own good: whether in prosperity or in
chastisement [Deut.8:5; 8:1-3; 8:18]. Remember God is always at work; never goes on break nor
slumbers [Ps.121:1-8; Deut.23:12-14; Ps.74:12].

Discuss how each passage shows that it is God’s mind to deliver: Gen.3:21(Gen.3:7); Gen.14:14-
16; 14:18-20; Ex.3:7-10; 7:14-18; Luke 1:67-75; Luke 2:10-11; Matt.1:21; John10:10; 1John3:8

5.] FOR GOD TO DO ANYTHING ON EARTH HE MUST FIND A MAN [But that vessel must be
purified before God would use him/her]
By God’s own law and restriction there is nothing He’d do on earth without a human vessel. If
God cannot find a church or a man/woman to pray to give birth to His will, it will not be done.
Again if the Lord does not have or find someone to carry out an assignment, it will not be done.
Whatever God plans to do for your country or family or business; if there is no one to pray, and,
or to do what God wants done, those blessings will not be released [Luke 19:41-44; 1Tim.1:18]. In
the same way Satan cannot do anything until he finds a man to use, and even with that, whatever
Satan will do must be within the boundaries God has allowed for him [Job1:12; 2:6]. God sets
boundaries for every human activity; in fact, not just man but the entire creation. Discuss these
passages in the light of the above: Gen.12:1-4; Ex.3:10; Ezek.22:30-31; 2Chron.16:9; Rev.3:21;
Jer.50:20-22; Is.6:3-8

6.] GOD SEEKS A DISTINCT PEOPLE; A PEOPLE SEPARATED FROM THE WORLD

What is the meaning of the word, Church? God’s mind is always to seek out a people separated
unto Him as His own; a people that will not be contaminated by the world [1John 2:15-17;
John18:36]. This is the purpose of the Church; to be the Bride of Christ. The word, bride here is
used signifying exclusiveness; just the same way a woman becomes the exclusive partner of a
man as his wife. Anyone who loves the things of this world, is already married to the world, and
can never be with God in Heaven. God is a Holy God and therefore wants children who would
submit to Christ as His people to be moulded into the image of Christ, the image of holiness. See
how the passages below explain this. Gen.12:1-3; Ex.6:1-8; 19:3-6; Lev. 20:25-26; Is.43:21; Luke
1: 74-75; 2Cor.6:14-18; 1Peter 1:13-16; 2:9.

7.] GOD WANTS HIS CHILDREN TO EXERCISE POWER ON HIS BEHALF

This is what the Lord means when He says, pray in My Name. It is difficult for man to
understand how much God loves His children; and how He wants them to be in fellowship with
Him and wield power and authority in His name, that is, on His behalf. Discuss the following
passages in the light of this thought that God wants His people to exercise power in His name.
Ex.4:1-9; 4:12; Ex. 14:14-16; 1Kings17:1-5 (18:1); Matt.10:1; Luke 9:1; Luke10:19; Matt.16:19;
Mark16:17-18; Acts 4:29-33

8.] GOD HAS MADE PROVISIONS FOR THE WEAKNESSES OF HIS CHILDREN

Using these scriptures show how God has made accommodation for the weaknesses of His
people: Jer.31:31-34; Heb.8:9-12; Heb.4:14-16; 1John1:8-10; 2:1-2; John14;26; 15:26; 16:7-14;
Rom.8:26-27.

9.] WHAT DOES GOD EXPECT FROM HIS PEOPLE - Discuss what God expects from His people
using these scriptures.

Deut.10:12-13; Micah 6:6-8; John15:1-7; Matt.11:28-30; Luke14:25-33; John13:34-35; 15:12
