Resume Requirements
Resumes are much like the way someone dresses—everyone has their own style and preferences.
There are some common guidelines for resume development, which we will abide by for consistency
in our program. Please follow the guidelines listed below.
Choose to highlight your most positive accomplishments. Your resume is a place to shine, not a place
to be modest.
The CIS System is a great place for you record lots of details you may later use in your resume.
Complete each section in as much detail as possible. Then just use the most appropriate information
on the resume itself. The other information will be saved, so you won’t have to go back and look
things up if an employer requires more specific information.
Below are step-by-step instructions for creating your resume using CIS:
1. Go to http://oregoncis.uoregon.edu and log in using your username and password. Please see
the ISM or Career Pathways coordinator if you have difficulty logging in.
2. Click on My Career Planning Portfolio
3. Click on My Education and Work History
4. Enter information within each of the 8 Resume Data Entry Tabs. See notes below.
A. Personal Information
• Complete all of this information fully, please note that there is no need to include
your age on your resume and your graduation year is optional.
B. Education History
• Include only High Schools attended. There is no need to go further back.
-4-
Institute of Science and Mathematics (ISM) Senior Portfolio Guidelines
C. Work History
• You can include paid jobs as well as volunteer work if it was done over a longer
period of time
• Include “jobs” that reflect your skills, employability, and work ethic
• You must include the company, job title, start and end dates, and duties
• Other information is optional for your resume, but may be needed on application
forms. Go ahead and record it here so you don’t have to look it up later.
D. Skills and Achievements
• Include information about special training or courses you have taken to gain
specific skills and knowledge
E. Workshops and Training
• Include pertinent information regarding your knowledge of equipment, special
skills, interests, licenses, languages, software
F. Employment Objective
• The objective is optional at this time
G. References
• List 3 references who are NOT family members and who can talk about your
work skills. Make sure to ask them if they are willing to provide a POSITIVE
reference and include their accurate contact information
• References may be listed on the bottom of your resume or attached as an
additional page.
5. After you have entered your information, click on Format and Print Resume
6. Select your preferences for style and sections to include
7. Select to convert it to an .rtf file (allows you to make changes)
8. Click Create Resume
You may want to use a different software to create your resume—that is fine, but the data will all be
available for you quickly now through CIS.

Journals
You are required to have ten journal entries. You may write about whatever you want, but following
are some sample questions. Remember your project should demonstrate personal relevance,
academic rigor, and reflection. The journal is a great place to show all three. Refer to the Career
Related Learning Standards (CRLS) in your packets for explanations of each.
Topic Ideas
1. Think about the CRLS. In which of the areas are you the strongest? Why do you consider it
your strongest? How have you demonstrated that standard?
2. Think about the CRLS. In which of the areas are you the weakest? How do you think you
could develop that area? What activities could you participate in to practice it more?
3. What experiences have you participated in that you believe have helped you the most to
develop skills related to the CRLS? Think about both in school and out of school activities.
4. Where are you with your project right now? Do you feel like you are keeping up? Falling
behind? What have you done well? What do you need to focus on more?
5. What do you plan to do after high school? What have you done to prepare yourself for that
next step? What can you do between now and graduation to work toward that goal?
6. What do you want your life to look like as an adult? What is important to you?
7. Choose one of the CRLS. (You can respond to this several times.) Provide an example of a
situation when you witnessed someone demonstrate a skill related to that standard well and a
time when you witnessed it poorly demonstrated. What makes the difference? How did
people react to each?

Attention: If you have used CIS in the past, you probably already have a career Planning
Portfolio. Do not create a new one. If you have forgotten your User name and Password, ask
your school’s Career Pathways contact (teacher, counselor, or advisor) to look it up for you. If
you don’t have a Career Planning Portfolio, follow these steps to create one.

For your portfolio you MUST include your ISM Internship and Job Shadow, as well as one additional
experience. Following those experiences you may include as many additional experiences as you
would like. Each experience you document should follow this order:
Think of this section as a scrapbook of your experiences during high school, which have helped you
become the person you are today. What activities are you most proud of? What activities helped you
determine the direction you are planning to take after high school?
For each of the CRLEs included in your portfolio, complete a reflection addressing the answers to
each of the following questions. Remember the three R’s—Relevance, Rigor, and Reflection. Your
response should address each of the following questions and be thoughtful, detailed, and complete.
• How did you select this CRLE to include in your portfolio? Why is it important to you? How
did your experience fit with your education, occupation, and personal goals?
• What obstacles or challenges did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
• Which Career Related Learning Standards (CRLS) did you demonstrate? How? (Refer to the
CRLS Table.)
• What other skills and knowledge did you learn and develop?
• How did you apply academic skills (skills directly taught at school) during the experience?
How would you evaluate the experience overall? Did it meet the expectations you had when you
selected it? Could you have done something differently to improve the experience?

Summary Reflection
It is important for students to reflect on their entire ISM Portfolio and they process of creating it.
Although it can be a cumbersome process, many students feel a sense of pride while reflecting upon
and sharing their many accomplishments. What did you learn about yourself while creating your
portfolio? Respond to the following questions as a reflection on the portfolio process.
