SELEX Communications launches advanced air defence Target Data Receiver

SELEX Communications, a Finmeccanica company, has launched the Target Data Receiver
(TDR), a new, advanced, Situational Awareness tactical data terminal designed to support
the operational effectiveness of battlefield Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) systems, by
processing radar data and clearly displaying the current Local Air Picture to the detachment
Commander. The TDR supports target selection, handles multiple tracks simultaneously and
reduces the time to engagement of hostile platforms, whilst offering Friend-or-Foe
visualisation to avoid fratricide.

A lightweight, man-worn, portable, ruggedised data terminal provides the heart of the system,
interfacing between radars and their associated Man-Portable Air Defence Systems
(MANPADS) weapons. The TDR receives radar data, via field wires or radio links, and
presents comprehensive target engagement data to the Commander. To support the
Commander’s decision making, key threats are highlighted, with up to 20 targets being
prioritised.

The highly reconfigurable TDR can be used as the data management tool to interface with
radars and Control Centres such as the SAAB GIRAFFE radar family, with future radar
interfaces planned. It is to be deployed with SHORAD Missile Systems such as the SAAB
RBS70 with all its various munitions options. Additional weapon interfaces are planned,
reflecting the inherent upgradeability of the TDR’s design.

The TDR comprises the Commander’s Terminal (CT), the Radio and Wire Adapter (RWA)
and the Weapon Adapter (WA):
• The CT processes the target data and acts as the Human Machine Interface to the
Commander, assisting in prioritising and selecting targets to engage. In parallel, it
generates signals and synthesised voice messages to assist the weapons operators
in guiding the weapon onto the selected target.
• The RWA interfaces the system to the radar employing a data modem via wire and
radio connections.
• The WA provides the configurable interface to the weapon system, passing on aiming
signals and feeding back the air defence missile status for display on the CT.

The system includes a voice intercom facility, enabling the Commander to communicate with
both the radar and weapon operators. Military headsets with peripheral awareness and
Pressel units support this capability.

The Commander operates with a Windows-based tablet PC display, featuring up to 20

simultaneous targets. These are overlaid on a display using standard vector map formats
VMAP0 and VMAP1. The display provides all threat information needed for rapid and
accurate decision-making, including course vectors and predictions, IFF status, target height
and speed, target number, threat priority and jamming status. It shows arcs of fire, with
defined sectors of interest and fire-inhibited zones.

SELEX Communications, a Finmeccanica Company, is a communications systems supplier for military and civil customers. Uniquely placed to lead the delivery of
Network Centric Communications, the Company’s capabilities encompass solutions for joint, land, sea and air applications, secure and mission critical communications.
Leader in advanced technology with over 100 years of experience, SELEX Communications develops state-of-the-art communications solutions meeting customer
requirements and exceeding their expectations. SELEX Communications employs more than 5000 people worldwide, with offices and plants in Italy, the UK, USA,
Germany, Turkey, Romania and South America.
The system software assists in target threat evaluation, target prioritisation and selection.
Targets suitable for engagement are selected in accordance with the Commander’s air
defence weapons and anti-aircraft munitions capabilities. Time bars indicating the firing
window are displayed to the Commander. Target tracks are predicted during radar signal
drop-outs for up to several seconds.

Rapid deployment is a key design consideration. A built-in GPS receiver assists with the
rapid geo-location of system assets during deployment, enabling the automatic and accurate
entry of the weapon’s position. The system is transported in two lightweight man-portable
backpacks. The TDR can be fully deployed and operational, or broken down and on the
move to a new location, in less than 15 minutes.

Suitable for global deployments, the system can operate across a wide temperature range of
-40ºC to +55ºC, having robust mechanical construction and IP67 sealing. The system is
designed for operation when crew are wearing full winter clothing with gloves, or equipped
with an NBC outfit and mask.

Phil Robinson, Senior UK Vice-President, comments, “In today’s fast-moving

battlespace, Commanders need threat information to be clearly and rapidly presented
for decision-making to ensure force survival in ever-changing operational
environments. Through our partnership with SAAB, we have created a new capability
to significantly enhance the effectiveness of air defence systems.”
