Clinician at Desert Senita
Community Health Center
(DSCHC). Susan provide
general mental health
counseling services,
specializing in patient’s
behavioral changes to
compliment their medical
treatment.
Ric Sudberry
Board Member
Ric is the father of five and
spent five years in the US
Air Force as a Medical
Technician. Ric works full
time at Home Depot in
Phoenix, AZ. He enjoys
reading, watching football
(Go Steelers!) and traveling.
Norma Gomez
Board Member
Norma is a mother of three
and grandmother of nine.
Norma first began her work
as an advocate about 20
years ago when she began
working with the
developmentally disabled
population. She continues
her advocate work with the
Pima County Attorneys’
Office, Victim Services
Division. She enjoys
teaching Baile folklórico,
which she has done for the
last 25 years in Ajo.
Wow, What a Month April Was!
April was a busy month for
Kaity’s Way. We started off with
a bang at the Take Back the

Night! event on April 1 in
Downtown Phoenix. It was
double duty for us as we
presented and had an exhibit
table set up. On April 2 ,

presented at the 7 Annual
Arrowhead Kiwanis Club Luau
in Glendale, AZ.

April 14 was a double header
for Kaity’s Way as we
presented to Mesa Community
College and the City of
Phoenix. Ms. Bonnie Black’s
Victimology class at Mesa
Community College listened as
Bobbi Sudberry shared Kaity’s
story. The following quote from
Ms. Bonnie Black, really shows
how Kaity’s Way has impacted
the community: “……thank you

presentation. We spent a
couple classes talking about
your presentation. The
students were greatly impacted
(as was I) and in fact one
student shared a story in class
that he knew someone in a
dating relationship who was

Later that day, we presented
to the City of Phoenix
Prosecutor office in honor of
Victims Rights Week. Then it
is off to Holbrook for the
Navajo County Attorneys
Office 2nd Annual Victim
Rights Symposium. Bobbi
Sudberry represented Kaity’s
Way as one of the keynote
speakers and presented
Kaity’s Story at two 90 minute
workshops. Kaity’s Way was
also present at this years
Homicide Survivors
Candlelight Vigil in Tucson

Arizona on April 16 thanks to

Now we are off to Douglas
Arizona where Bobbi Sudberry
presented to the entire student
body of Douglas High School

from April 19 to the 21 .
Douglas is a wonderful
community that is very
fortunate to have a team of
truly caring individuals looking
out for them.
We received a total of 985
completed surveys from the
students of DHS results are as
follows:
99.2% of students believe they
would recognize the warning
signs of abuse in a
relationship.

46.8% know or have known
someone in an abusive
relationship.
7.9% believe they have been
in an abusive relationship.
98.8% agree that it does

97.6% of students do feel it
would be helpful for teenagers
if more adults were educated
about Teen Dating Violence.

that they believe is in a
Potentially Violent or Violent
relationship.

On April 12, 2011 Bobbi
Sudberry of Kaity’s Way was
awarded the Governors
Triumph over Tragedy Award
for her work in the community
since the loss of her daughter,
Kaitlyn Sudberry in 2008. This
award is given in recognition
of her ability and efforts to
make a difference for the
citizens of Arizona in spite of
the circumstances she has
endured.

Advocacy Center (F.A.C.) was
the advocate assigned the
Sudberry case after the
murder of Kaitlyn Sudberry.
The last time Bobbi and Frank
had spoken was more than
three years ago and they had
never met in person. It was
completely by chance that
they meet up on this
unseasonably warm evening
at the Take Back the Night
event on April 1, 2011. Their
exhibit tables were set up right
next to each other and both of
them out there to provide the
community with very
necessary information.
The Family Advocacy Center
for the city of Phoenix
provides an array of services
to victims of violent crimes.
“Many times, we are the first
person from a social service
capacity that conducts follow-
up to assess needs and
provide information and
referrals.”

either in person, by phone or
offsite. Victim advocates from
the F.A.C. assist victims with
various services, such as,
safety planning, relocation,
shelter access, court escorts,
crisis intervention, forensic
exams, transportation,
referrals for professional
counseling, support groups,
victim compensation and
victims’ rights education.
Particularly in domestic
violence cases, victim
advocates from the F.A.C. are
consistently assessing the
victim’s safety and educating
on domestic violence.
“After obtaining the case
where Kaity Sudberry was a
victim, I was glad I was able to
help. It was my
understanding the F.A.C. was
the first true follow-up for the
family. As in many cases,
victim advocates from the
F.A.C. spend the time
necessary listening to the
family members. Certainly a

We have added the option of

As of earlier this year Kaity’s
Way has become part of the
SVPEP state planning team
(the state plan on primary
prevention of sexual violence).
This team consists of people
and programs from various
backgrounds and areas from
around the state. The goal is
to be proactive by planning
and implementing programs of
to Douglas for
Stronger Families Council
for providing a very
generous honorarium to
Kaity’s Way.
