WICKED SUPPLY CHAIN: UNLUCKY CONSUMERS

Supply chain is the array of wholesalers, retailers and other third parties who facilitates the end 
user  to  get  the  myriad  products  or  solutions  from  the  producer  far  away  from  him.  A  well 
equipped  supply  chain  is  very  important  for  the  consumers  to  reduce  their  valuable  time, 
energy,  effort  and  also  money.  This  is  most  important  specially  in  the  case  of  buying  foreign 
products.  Consumers may take supply chain system as a “blessing” for them 

With  a  woeful  heart,  we  have  to  say  that  this supply  chain  system  can  turn  into a  curse.  The 
immoral  interventions  of  the  mischievous  sprite  third  parties  sometimes  turn  this  chain  into 
vicious trap. These middle men benefit themselves by charging the end users extra money. Very 
often as the supply chain increase, not only information among the channels gets distorted, but 
also  price  of  the  product  increases  as  it  passes  through  several  channels.  As  a  result,  a  lion 
share of the money is grabbed by the intermediaries.  

As  a  part  of  the  study  we  contacted  a  fisherman  of  Shyamnagar,  Satkhira  ,  a  major  supplier 
district of Shrimp in Bangladesh. According to him, the initial selling price of the “Galda” shrimp 
in the local village market is around tk. 400‐450. The price is about tk. 500 in Satkhira market 
and  in  Dhaka  one  end  user  gets  this  fish  at  a  cost  of  tk.  550‐600.  So  the  price  of  the  shrimp 
increases almost 50%. This assumption remains true for other fish, meat and vegetables. 

How this differential can be resolved? Well this is not an easy job. However, implementing the 
measures mentioned below can help to reduce the disparity in price increase. 

1. Building inventories for non perishable goods. 
2. Forcing the suppliers to unbundle pricing. 
3. Using technical instruments that will enable the marginal farmer or fisherman to know 
about the current market price demand etc. 
4. Establishing a viable way that will help the rural farmers to sell their products directly to 
the retailers without the help of third parties. 

Presently due to the malevolent supply chain system, we the end users are paying extra money 
and  the  poor  farmers  and  fishermen  are  getting  deprived  of  their  legitimate  returns.  It  really 
doesn’t  make  sense.  So,  we  should  come  forward  and  stand  against  this  wicked  supply  chain 
system.
