Parisi, a Democrat, said he knew he did not have the votes to keep the deputy clerk
vote position.

Council President Robert Agresta, a Republican, said he did not believe there was a
need for a deputy once he saw that Borough Administrator/Clerk Susan
McGinley-Spohn was able to handle the position.

"We were looking for a cost savings there," Agresta said, adding that many other
towns do not have a deputy clerk.

He said retaining the position would have been "fiscally irresponsible," arguing that
some of the duties can be done by anyone in Borough Hall.

"I think to add another salary on at 30, 40, $50,000 for the couple weeks a year
Susan might not be there to fill those roles is kind of crazy," Agresta said.

Parisi, though, said no one else can perform the deputy's duties except the borough
administrator/clerk.

"I'm all in favor of saving money and being efficient," the mayor said. "But this is
like telling the police they will have cars but not tires."

Parisi said an administrative assistant currently performs the borough's daily

clerical functions, though that person also works for the Shade Tree Commission
and helps out in the Finance Department.
