German vocabulary list: House
Tip for learning German house vocabulary: Try writing the German words on post-it notes and stick
them on your furniture around the house. This way you will see them a few times a day and learn
new words faster!
The rooms and parts of the house/apartment in German
1. das Haus (die Häuser) – house(s): Wir wohnen in einem großen Haus. – We live in a big house.
2. die Wohnung(en) – apartment(s)/flat(s): Sie hat eine kleine Wohnung in Frankfurt gekauft. – She
bought a small apartment in Frankfurt.
3. das Wohnhaus (die Wohnhäuser) – apartment building(s): Wie viele Wohnungen gibt es in
diesem (Wohn)haus? – How many apartments are there in this residential/apartment building?
There are a few different German words you can use for “floor”:
4. das Stock(werk(e) – floor(s): Sein Büro befindet sich im dritten Stock. – His office is located on
the third floor. Wie viele Stockwerke hat der Burj Khalifa? – How many floors does the Burj Khalifa
have?
5. der Stock (die Stöcke – rarely used in plural, Stockwerke is more common) – floor(s): Er wohnt
im zweiten Stock. – He lives on the second floor.
6. die Etage(n) – this word came from French and is more or less used in different regions: Wie
viele Etagen hat der Burj Khalifa? – How many floors does the Burj Khalifa have? Ich wohne auf der
vierten Etage. – I live on the fourth floor.
7. das Geschoß (die Geschosse) – this word is usually used in compound words
Erdgeschoß(ground floor/Obergeschoß(upper floor)/Dachgeschoß(top floor/attic).
In Germany, the first/ground floor is called Erdgeschoß. The counting starts from the floor above
Erdgeschoß: 1.OG – second floor, 2.OG – third floor, 3.OG – fourth floor. Obergeschoß means
“upper floor” and is often abbreviated as OG.
8. die Treppe(n) – stair(s)/step(s)/staircase: Ich laufe die Treppe hoch. Ich laufe die Treppe runter.
– I’m going up the stairs. I’m going down the stairs.
9. das Treppenhaus – staircase/stairwell: Kann man den Kinderwagen im Treppenhaus abstellen?
– Can you put/keep the stroller in the stairwell?
10. der Aufzug (die Aufzüge) – lift(s), elevator(s): Nehmen Sie die Treppe oder den Aufzug? – Are
you taking the stairs or the elevator?
11. der Fahrstuhl (die Fahrstühle) – lift(s), elevator(s): Seit einer Woche ist der Fahrstuhl defekt. –
The elevator has been broken for a week.
12. die Garage(n) – garage(s): Wir haben kein Auto und nutzen unsere Garage als Abstellraum. –

13. die Terrasse(n) – patio(s), terrace(s): Wir möchten ein Haus mit Terrasse bauen. – We want to
build a house with a terrace.
14. der Garten (die Gärten) – garden(s), backyard(s): Wir suchen ein kleines Haus mit Garten oder
Terrasse in Tier. – We are looking for a small house with a garden or terrace in Tier.
15. der Balkon (die Balkone or die Balkons) – balcony(ies): Habt ihr einen Balkon in der
Wohnung? – Do you have a balcony in the apartment?
16. die Wand (die Wände) – wall(s): Beim Auszug müssen Mieter die Wände und Decken
streichen. – When moving out, tenants must paint the walls and ceilings.
17. der Flur(e) – hallway(s)/corridor(s) : Diese Wohnung hat keinen Flur. Wenn man die Wohnung
betritt, steht man sofort im Wohnzimmer. – This apartment has no hallway. When you enter the
apartment, you are immediately in the living room.

24. die Haustür – front door/house door: Der Postbote hat das Paket an der Haustür abgestellt. –
The postman left the package at the front door.
25. der Briefkasten(die Briefkästen) – mailbox(es): Wer keine Werbung im Briefkasten will, kann
auf dem Briefkasten einen Aufkleber “Bitte keine Werbung!” anbringen. – If you don’t want
advertising in your mailbox, you can put a sticker on the mailbox saying “No advertising, please!”.
Rooms and spaces in German
26. das Zimmer (-) – room(s): Wie viele Zimmer hat das Weiße Haus? – How many rooms does
the White House have?
27. das Badezimmer (often simply das Bad) – bathroom: Was kostet es, ein Bad zu renovieren? –
What does it cost to renovate a bathroom?
28. das Schlafzimmer – bedroom: Eine Klimaanlage im Schlafzimmer hilft beim Einschlafen. – Air
conditioning in the bedroom helps you fall asleep.
29. das Wohnzimmer – living room: Wie kann ich mein Wohnzimmer dekorieren? – How can I
decorate my living room?
30. das Arbeitszimmer – study: Wer zu Hause kein Arbeitszimmer hat, kann keine Kosten für das
Homeoffice von der Steuer absetzen. – If you do not have a study at home, you cannot deduct any
costs for the home office from tax.
31. das Gästezimmer – guest room: Auch ohne Gästezimmer kann man Übernachtungsgäste
bequem unterbringen. – Even without a guest room the overnight guests can be accommodated

34. die Einbauküche or EBK – built-in kitchen: Wer zahlt die Reparaturen an einer Einbauküche in
der Mietwohnung? – Who pays for repairs to a built-in kitchen in the rented apartment?
In Germany, apartments do not always come with a kitchen, so the kitchen room might be
completely empty when you move in and you have to install your own kitchen. When you see
Einbauküche or EBK in the apartment/ house description, it means that it comes with a furnished
kitchen.
35. der Keller (-) – cellar(s)/basement(s): Mit einem eigenen Fitnessraum im Keller lässt sich Zeit
und Geld sparen. – Having your own fitness room in the basement saves time and money.
36. die Decke(n) – ceiling(s): Soll man zuerst die Decke oder die Wand streichen? – Should you
paint the ceiling or the wall first?
